I have Verizon and I have an LG enV Touch and I am only required to have a $10 data plan. The data plan is very limited but I don't use it much anyway. I've had my phone for amost one year and I still like it a lot.
I have Verizon and I'm phone shopping. I have the G'Zone, which in my opinion, should be issued to moms at the hospital when they give birth. It is the optimal phone for moms of toddlers. It's shatter proof and water proof. My son dropped 1 expensive phone in the toilet. When I replaced it, he dropped the next one in a glass of apple juice! I went back and got an indestructable phone. SO, now 4 years later, I have the same indestructable phone! My kids are out of the destructive phase. I'm ready to move up to a phone with some gadgets. I want a better camera, for it to be an mp3 player, and an easy texting phone. It seems like all the good, fun phones at Verizon require a $30 data package. The ones that don't, have horrible reviews. Well, most of the phones out now except Droids have terrible reviews. I feel stuck with this old walkie talkie! Any suggestions, or phones that have worked better than the reviews would have you believe? I've even considered going online and buying a used LG Chocolate or LG NV or something for now and saving this upgrade for when they come out with a decent phone again. WHat Verizon phone do you love?
I think im going with he LG Cosmos Touch, since I discoverd it is actually an mp3 player after all. Wish me luck that i dont get a lemon of a phone!

I loved my old LG ENV 2 it was Maroon I had it for 4 yrs. but it soon faded away had to do an upgrade. After much searching I didn't want to pay the $30.00 for the data package it would be lovely but it would make one grumpy husband,so I went with the LG Cosmos Touch it has a great texting feature the qwerty keyboard slides out, touch screen & you can have the $30.00 data or the $15.00 data.It is a cute phone I added the pink case to it & everyone so far loves my phone as much as I do.The flaw is there is no video on it I didn't need it since I have a camcorder & camera that takes video which is almost with me the camera is a 1.3 mp & you can add a memory card.My second choice was the Pantech Crux all touch screen
I have the moterolla droid.. it has a 5mplx camera.. I really like the fact that it has a pull out key board. I am typing on it now.. I use this phone instead of my lap top.. love the google maps driving direction app.. use it all the time..
I currently have joined the iPhone world. But, as you said, it requires the data package. Before it, I had the LG NV. LOVED it!! Took great pics and was super easy to text on. Do they not have them anymore in the Verizon stores? We got our iPhones from BestBuy and I coulda swore they still had the NV there. I've heard mixed reviews about the Chocolate. Anyways, good luck!!
I really REALLY like my blackberry. It's an older style -a storm- but it's really easy to use. I have plenty of music on it, and it takes decent pictures. You can download an app if you want to be able to edit pics on your phone. It has a qwerty keyboard, so that's handy. My favorite thing about the phone is that you can turn on the music, then lock the keyboard so you can use it to workout, move around with it, etc. without butt-dialing. (I turn on the music and let my 10 month old dance around with it. :) she's such a cutie!) It is technically a 'smartphone' and you will have to pay for the data package... but it's worth it IMO. I can use it to get on facebook, mamapedia ;) or just about any sites. It also has a weather app so I always know what is going on there.
The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have flash (although some models do...) I had a blackberry pearl before I upgraded to this one (I wanted another pearl, but they don't make them any more. grr...), and it had an awesome flash. I could turn on my video camera and use it as a flashlight. :)
I have the palm pre plus. It has had a few glitches, but overall, I really like the phone. They now have a new model, the palm pre plus 2. This phone can also act like a wireless hotspot that up to 5 computers can connect to. This is a great feature! And Verizon offered this normally $40/month feature free as long as you keep your number and that phone. It is good for up to 5G/month and is great for traveling in the car with your laptop, or sitting in a park, or just going somewhere that you want wireless and there isn't any. I don't know if they are offering it with the new model, but it is worth checking into. You would still have to pay for the data plan, which I think varies.
All smartphones with Verizon require the data pkg, even the LG enV. I have the LG Ally and am happy with the features. Good camera and it has talk to text, which is safe while driving. But my next phone at upgrade will be a Droid X. Good luck in your decision.
