After reading about the woman and her teacher and the advice you all gave I felt compelled to tell you all my story and to get your input and advice. My child goes to a daycare four days a week. I love the place and am very happy with their care of my child so far. A couple of weeks ago my child was diagnosed with a mild ear infection. She was on an antibiotic and got better. four days of being off the antibiotic the day care said they thought she had thrush, which I know can happen as a result of being on the antibiotic. I took her to the doctor and she said she saw no signs of thrush. four days later the day care brought it up again. I checked and saw nothing. two days later they said they saw it in the diaper area. I checked her when I got home and saw very small traces in the corners of the mouth and a couple of spots in the diaper area. I called the doctor immediately and got medication. I kept my child home for 5 days and went back to day care this week.

Now my frustration. I know thrush is contagious that is why I kept my child home. There is a child at daycare that is taking the purple stuff as a "preventative" so the day care tells me because his mother and hehave been exchanging thrush through breastfeeding. I have noticed hte purple stuff around his mouth for over two months. I asked my doctor if my child got the thrush from the antibiotic use or from the child at daycare. she said that both were possible but my child had been off antibiotics for 10 days before I noticed the thrush. She said that the children would have to be sharing bottles or pacis for her to get it from another child. I explained that this was not happening but that it was possible that both children may have shared toys in the mouth and could she get it this way. My doctor said it could be possible that even if the child is on antibiotics if the thrush is there it is contagious. I mentioned my concerns about the child to the daycare administrator. That is when theytold me the boy is taking the purple stuff as a "preventative" that his doctor said he was not contagious. I said that my doctor said that he could be contagious. The administrator said that now she had conflicting diagnosis. I mentioned that it might be in her best interest and the interest of the other children to get a third opinion to find our who was correct. She said that she would do a search of all the other children and see if anyone else had it that my child may have gotten it from but did not believe it was from this one child. I was never contacted regarding the results of the search or if they had gotten a third opinion. Other important info....the child in question, his mother is a teacher there as well as two aunts and two family friends. The administrator alsosaid that she has had conflicting informaiton form my pediatrician before and feels that my docrot has her own agenda regarding her diagnosis' and does not respect her opinion.

My quetions: Do you feel that it is the day care administrators responsiblilty to get the third opinion to protect the other children? Do any of you know if thrush is contagious while a child is on medication? Are any of you willing to ask your pediatrition and find out for me if my doctor is right?

My anger is that I do not htink they did anything after I brought it to their attention due to the employee relationship. That nothing wassaid to me regarding their followup on the issue. That the daycare had the audacity to voice thier opinion and bad mouth my pediatrician. Am I over reacting? I just want to protect my child and the other children in daycare. That is why I kept my child home for five days. I just feel helpless and do not want to jeapordize my childs care or their care for my child if I pursue this further. Your advice, help, opinions, and input will help me out very much. Thank you.

The purple that you are seeing around the child's mouth is called gentian violet. It is commonly used to treat thrush not prevent it. I have been a pediatric nurse for several years and have seen this treatment used time and time again for treating thrush in young children. It is swabbed on with a q-tip. I would make sure your child is not being re-infected with contaminated toys, etc.

I dont have any experience with thrush, but I was a licensed and certified daycare provider. I am sorry but this facility is putting other children at risk, which is totally uncalled for. I would not worry about overreacting. You are not. I personally feel however, but not saying anything to the proper authorities you are jeapordizing your childs care and the care of others. I do realize daycare is extremely difficuly to find, but something needs to be done. For your childs well being, the other childrens and your being. Talk to your pediatrician and see what she can recommend and please seriously think about finding another daycare. I trully beleive this one does not have hte childrens best interests at heart...Sorry if this sounded harsh, wasnt meant to attack you, just my opinions...K....arkparties.com

My daughter just had thrush in her month a month ago. It is contagious and you have to be careful to not let other kids share items. A basic search on the internet (using "thrush contagious") will provide you with a lot of substantiated evidence that thrush IS contagious. Here is a link with precautions that should be taken:

http://www.uihealthcare.com/topics/dental/dent4380.html

"To prevent thrush, keep these tips in mind:

be careful, when changing diapers, not to transfer thrush from the mouth to the diaper area or from a diaper rash, caused by thrush, to the mouth

follow good hygiene, including careful hand washing and disposal of nasal and oral secretions

notify child care workers that a child has thrush, so extra precautions can be taken

sterilize all bottles, nipples, pacifiers, and teething toys by boiling for 5 minutes, then boil everything again once the thrush has disappeared

eat yogurt or take acidophilus capsules when taking antibiotics

treat any vaginal yeast infection that develops during pregnancy as soon as possible

if you smoke, ask your healthcare provider for ways to quit
see your dentist every 6 to 12 months, especially if you have diabetes or dentures

brush and floss your teeth after every meal

limit the amount of sugar and yeast-containing foods you eat (such as bread, beer and wine)

See your healthcare provider if thrush does not go away on its own or tends to recur."

Good luck!
