Vegas to the Grand Canyon

How long does it take to drive from Las Vegas (Mandalay Bay Hotel) to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon? GoogleMaps says 6 hours, but some of my friends say it takes less time.

Also, is the West Rim (closer to Vegas) good enough or should we definitely go to the South Rim?

We only have a day to do this, but we can leave at 5am if we need to!

Oh, and thoughts about the Hoover Dam would be appreciated too!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

It is a long day trip to the South Rim, but worth it. The Grand Canyon is a sight everyone should see at least once. The Hoover Dam is a wonderful example of the Works Project building under FDR in the depression. If you like art deco take the VIP tour. The structure is filled with inlayed floors and art deco panels.

My girlfriends and I did this trip years ago and it took us between 7-8 hours if you add all the bathroom stops, gas, etc.

It's probably another good hour from Flagstaff to the North Rim, so you should estimate 5 hours.

I googled it too, and the first time I did google it took you North of the Canyon up near Zion National Park for a 6 hour drive- if you're going that way just hit Zion instead, very beautiful and a lot less crowded. Force Google to take you south down through Kingman and it will be closer to 5 hours.

The South Rim is the place to see the canyon if you are looking for the views you always see in the pictures. However, you are closer to the Skywalk (3 hour drive) if it is still operational. I've never done that and think I'd be too terrified to try, but you might want to consider it if you are adventurous. Still I don't think you'd see the same layered depth and beauty to the canyon that you'd see on the South Rim.

South Rim is the tourist spot - North Rim isn't as visited and doesn't have as much 'accomodations'... Pretty sure Hoover will make your choice the South Rim! btw - do you intend to eat there or on the way? South Rim has restaurant - think North only had little shop, not sure anyplace else has much else besides a possible little shop, so check that out, too, so you aren't disappointed!

ps - watch for the California condors, too!
