Hi Mama's--
My boys have all kinds of allergies including dairy, gluten, tree nuts, and eggs. We found a vegan gluten free oat bread made by Outside the Bread Box that is fantastic, but at $5.15 a loaf it's pretty pricey. So we bought a bread machine thinking we'd make our own. However, the only recipes I can find use rice flour rather than gluten free oat flour. I don't really like rice bread, though--it's too dry and dense. Wondering if any of you Mama's know if I can substitute the rice flour with gluten free oat flour? Or if you have any good vegan gluten free breads that can be made in a bread machine that aren't based on rice flour? I've found recipes I can bake with oats, but none for the bread machine. We even bought a cook book on gluten free breads for the bread machine and nothing. I'm beginning to think that we should return the bread machine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance!
J.

I don't use a bread machine, but have you checked out Bob's Redmill? They give recipes for both bread machine and by hand. I would just try substituting the rice flour with the oat flour. It shouldn't hurt and should turn out just fine. I use a blend of different flours to make my bread. I do it by hand, I like to do it that way, and it turns out delicious.

Just a heads up: You can take the special foods off of your taxes as a medical expense. What you do is take the cost of the food and subtract the cost of regular food and what you have left over you can claim.

I believe you stated you were looking for a cheaper alternative.....in being on an alternative diet at one time I had to bake my own breads and such..I would say try it with the flour you prefer and see how it turns out. You may have to adjust the liquids depending on how it works with the flour, but that's easy enough!

Hi J.,
Oat flour is going to have a pretty different consistency (higher fat, higher moisture content) and has a different protein structure than rice flour. If you are going to experiment, know that you don't need a binder, like xanthan gum, for oat flour, so if the original recipe calls for that, you can omit it. If you are looking for some other recipes that meet your needs, we have allergen-free/gluten-free recipes on our blog, www.welcomingkitchen.com. I hope that helps.
