VBAC After 2 C-sections - Orchard,NE

I was just curious how many moms have been able to do this. I delivered my first born via emergency c-section because his heart rate dropped. My second, was a scheduled c-section. I wanted to do a VBAC with my 2nd, but my doctor wouldn't allow it. I have no medical problems and the only reason I had a c-section in the first place was because of my son's heart rate dropping. I have since been reading a lot. Any article I can find and have read the ICAN website. I wish I would've known then what I know now. I would've pushed for a VBAC then. I am not pregnant, but we will try again in about 1.5-2 years, and would like to try a VBAC. My Doctor still doesn't do VBACs, but I found out the hospital ( which is about 10-15 mins further than mine) allows them. I have a lot of questions and would like insight from other moms who have been able to do so. I feel like I have stripped of my privelages as a woman. Don't get me wrong, I am extremely happy that both my children are here safe and sound. I just feel it's my right and duty to be able to give birth to my child without having to undergo a major surgery. I hated the healing process, as it took 5 months for my scar to fully heal. My children are only 18 months apart, so while I was trying to care for a newborn (& myself) I was taking care of a toddler as well. I was virtually on my own as my husband work as in law enforcement & is in the military, so he is either gone or sleeping while we are awake. Thanks for all your input in advance!!

What can I do next?

My Dr would have done a VBAC after the first one but not after a second one. He said there is too much of a chance of problems with a vaginal birth and rupture to chance the life of the baby and mom after 2 c-sections. This may be the answer you get from the hospital too that they will do it after one but not two.
I just read a previous post and I wanted to answer that a baby's heart beat can go down and up during labor. The problem comes when it starts taking longer for the heart beat to come up or doesn't come up or is going way to low. Sometimes you can bring it back up without issues by giving the mom oxygen, etc. Sometimes it's not possible and a c-section is very necessary. I would rahter have a Dr. err on the side of caution than loose my child.

If it had been ONE previous cesarean... I would have backed you to fight for it no matter what. But after 2 cesareans, your uterine muscle wall is greatly damaged and would, sadly, be more practical to have a 3rd cesarean - with the knowledge you should never have anymore children after 3 cesareans.

I had an 'emergency cesarean' and I wish I could sue the hospital and OB. They did rob you and I from a normal aspect of pregnancy and childbirth, for their own gain. Fetal heart rate is supposed to drop and rise during the process of birth, the uterus packs 700lbs of pressure! Now if your baby's heart beat was artificially stimulated/depressed thru pitocin or epidural chemicals... then that was due to meddling OBs who want your to pop out your kid and fill in the bed with another Mom right away.

I'm sure ICAN can get you in touch with women and Dr's who are more knowledgeable about a possible VBAC after 2 c-sections.

The American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology just released a statement a month or two ago regarding VBACs. In that statement it encouraged doctors and hospitals to re-evaluate their anti-VBAC stance. It said that VBACs ARE safe and should be encourage over a repeat c-section. It even states that VBAC should be encouraged after 2 c-sections!!!

http://www.acog.org/from_home/publications/press_releases...

Doctors have taken a fear based and CYA stance on VBAC for years. Unfortunately this had led to a lot of misinformation and unnecessary c-sections. There is a less than 1% chance that your uterus will rupture during a VBAC. It goes up slightly with the use of pitocin but goes up IMMENSELY with the use of cervical ripeners like cervidil (and even more with the use of cytotec).

I have had 2 successful pitocin augmented labors! If it is done gently (i.e. the lowest dose given possible and then slowly increased if needed every hour or two) it can be done safely so don't let a doctor scare you into thinking you have to go into labor on or before your due date that's just more fear mongering and is a sure fire sign that your doctor does not actually support VBAC (since the MAJORITY of women will no go into labor naturally before 40 weeks). I went to 41 weeks with my son who is currently 10 months with no problems and other VBAC moms have gone longer.

You have done a great job in beginning to educate yourself on the facts of VBAC. If you would like to continue your research I really like these web-sites.

www.vbacfacts.com
www.childbirthconnection.org
and of course www.ican-online.org

I would also encourage you to seek out your local ICAN chapter and start going to meetings. These women will be a HUGE support to you in your emotional healing and also on the road to VBAC, They will be able to tell which doctors are the most supportive and which are not.

Good luck mama! If you have any questions are just want to talk feel free to message me.

I don't know if there are laws per state about this or if it is strictly a doctors choice. I had a c-section first time because my son was breech. I wanted to do a vbac the 2nd time. My dr would have allowed it since my first was not an emergency C. However, she said I would have to go into labor on my own, no pitocin given because that makes the contractions harder. He was due on Jan 6 and I wanted to have him in December, so I opted to go with a scheduled C. With my third, I did not have an option. My dr said with each and every C, your uterus gets thinner and the incision is weaker. It is basically a CYA for them. Most likely everything would be fine in a VBAC, but when it goes bad, it goes real bad real fast. It is just not worth the risk. You want to be healthy. Good luck in whatever you decide. Be open and honest with your doctor, and if you need to find a new one...go for it! Hope this helps some.

If a doctor would let you try for VBAC2C it has to be at least 4 years after your previous c-section. I am due with my 3rd in 3 weeks, since our youngest is almost 4 I am given a choice for vbac2c, but only If i go into labor on my own.Well chances of that are very slim since I have never gone on my own, so it's looking like another section in 2 weeks.
PS most doctors will let you have 4 section, but I have some friends who had 5 and are doing just fine.

I personally haven't had to go through with this (I'm only pregnant with my first) but I understand what you're saying about how you feel like your rights are being taken away. (After all, you said that your first c-section wasn't your choice) However, I can understand why your doctor is saying that he wouldn't want you to do a VBAC after 2 simulatneous c-sections. There are major risks of complications, but I think if you're up for it and you know the risks, you should deliver at a place where they would honor your birth plan. It's not impossible, and if you have good doctors, all should go well if you're closely monitored. I hope you have a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery (when you're ready!) :)

I had all 3 of mine C-Section. I was told that the dr won't risk a VBAC after 2 C-Sections due to the huge risk. I wouldn't put my life or the life of my kids in danger so I had the C-Section. In my opinion the safety of my kids is more important to my wants.

BTW I had long recovery's from mine also. You sound like me, all 3 of my kids are close in age. My kids are 9, 8, and 6 and at that time and for a few years my husband worked long hours, though he isn't a police officer..

Good luck to you. I hope it all works out for your baby and you!

I tried for a VBAC with my second child. I ended up with an emergency c-section because of the heart rate dropping right before I was ready to start pushing. The c-section was more painful than my previous failure to progress c-section and got infected (more painful than the c-section). I don't regret trying for the VBAC. You do need a practioner your trust, a supportive partner and if possible an experienced doula. I was happy with my midwife during the pregnancy and labor but both midwives missed the infection for a long while (over a week and 2 office visits) and I ended back in the hospital.

I had a bad experience but I have a friend who had a wonderful VBAC this past summer. It is worth checking out. You can always change your mind and have the c-section if a problem develops. I would say talk to a few doctors or midwives early in your pregnancy and see. I was feeling stressed about making a decision to try a VBAC and my midwife met with us for an appointment to discuss my concerns and her approach. I hope you find a good practioner who will address you concerns.

Be careful what you wish for. I had a much better recovery from my emergency c-section than I did with my vaginal birth. The tearing and pain down there still come back on occasion. Especially during sex. Just wanted to make you aware of that fun little bonus.
