Hey mamas,
So my hubby and I are definitely done have kids after this one and he is planning on getting a vasectomy after our child is born in November. I just had a question for those of you whose husband's have had the surgery. If you had insurance, what was the cost. I know it will vary of course, I was just hoping for a ballpark idea. Also, how long did you have to use another form of birth control before he was clear of swimmers. Thanks :D

What can I do next?

My husband paid his $15 copay, and that is it. It was totally covered with united healthcare.

I don't remember how long we protected ourselves. I have heard that a man needs to ejaculate 20+ times to get those last little dudes out.

Just went through this a year ago. We just had to pay our specialist co-pay, which is $50. Then the dr told him 30 times of cleaning the pipes (like that term!) and then get a semen analysis. He ended up getting one done after 20 times and he was clear! :). Have fun!!!

We are military, so I can't really answer the insurance question because ours was done on base at no cost to us. You should be able to work out what your co-pay is and then ballpark figures from the urologist you use and figure out what you owe from that. Just get a couple of estimates so you aren't surprised.

It's more about the ammount of "emissions" as opposed to number of days. Something like 25 emissions I think? So however long it takes you guys to "work that out" is how long. I would definitly keep using protection until he has his semen checked again because sometimes guys need a "do over" with the procedure.

my hubby was on my insurance when he had his almost a year ago. If I remember correctly there was the $25 office co-pay and then he had to pay $100 out of pocket. He had a "follow up" appt a couple of months after the procedure and they took his "sample" to check for the swimmers. He was all clear. It worked out great for us because he had it done a month before I had the twins so with that time and then the recovery after birth we didnt have to worry. by the time I was able to have sex again after my c-section he was all clear.

Our insurance didn't cover it so we paid $500 cash.

For the 1st wk he couldn't do anything then after that we were to "clean his pipes" as often as possible for 30days either using birth control or other forms than sex.

First you can call your insurance and find out the cost through them. Or you can call his doctor and find out what the cost will be.
Also it would be wise for him to go ahead and get it done now so you have some time to make the waiting period for the all clear and less time of using alternative birth control. Your husband will have to go back for a follow up in which he will give a sample that will be tested. Normally 3 months afterwards.

Well we had great insurance when my husband had his 15 years ago. It literally was the $10 office copay!

Vasectomies are the BEST! I advise getting it done before you have your baby...if you wait until after, he will not be able to assist you with the baby for a few days.

It takes 30 or so ejaculations to clear the pipes. He'll have two analyses to determine that he's good to go without any birth control.

Copays vary. You need to call your insurance carrier and find out what they cover and if there are any cost shares. The one good thing about waiting until after you have your baby is that you might meet your deductible and not have to pay a dime...you'll just have to work out what works best.

My husband had it done and all we had to pay was our co pay which was $20 at the time. I think all he had to do was after 10 times of him cleaning it out (yk?) he went for a follow up and then I think a couple months later he had his last follow up to make sure he will still good to go and that's it.

Remember to have both analysis to see that his pipes are clear. May men only have one, including my husband. A year and a half after testing 'all clear' I ended up pregnant! It was the best surprise of my life, but could be devastating to someone who doesn't want any more children. Needless to say, I have since had my tubes tied!
