Vasectomy - Lakeville,MN

We are thinking of getting my hubby clipped. (after 2 kids we feel we are done and I don't want to take birth control while nursing... or ever again!). He doesn't really have a 'primary physician' that he sees and doesn't want to go to a random doctor just to get a referral to a specialist to have this procedure done. My insurance gave me the name of a few Dr.s nearby that are covered for this procedure. Should I just call them and set up an appointment? Or would you recommend I do more research on who/where is the best DR. for this procedure? What questions should I ask them? Any other things to think about? Advice?

Look online for doctor reviews - sometimes that can help you weed out a 'bad' doctor. Call up and ask how many vasectomies the doc does in a year, or if it's a major part of his (or her) practice. Also, ask what procedure the doc will use - there are a few different procedures out there. Ask how long the procedure will take. Also, if your husband has any questions or concerns, just make sure you go with the doc that is willing to talk a bit first.

Just make sure he follows the Dr. orders after the procedure.

If he does, he'll be fine....if not, (like my hubby who felt great) suffered the consequences of not following Dr. orders.

I don't know about trying to find the BEST dr for the procedure, but find one that you and your hubby are comfortable with. When my husband had his done, he had to go in for a consult first anyway, so he got a chance to talk to the dr before the actual procedure. Start with the list your insurance company gave you and do a little online research to make sure there are no bad reviews and take it from there.

he should see a urologist - they are skilled in this area....

it's okay to interview a doctor before you go to them. So you can call and set up an appointment.

If the insurance company gave you names - call and talk!!

We went to a urologist who did vasectomies on a couple of friends. One guy who visited a different doctor had a bad experience, so we steered clear of him! Ask around, but if you can't get any personal references, check out some of the doctor rating websites. It should be a relatively short (half an hour to an hour) outpatient procedure in a medical office. Your husband should have to go back with a sample at 6 and 12 weeks to get cleared. It's awesome!

Ask around with your friends, co-workers & see if anyone knows of a good urologist as that's the type of doctor that would do the procedure.

My husband got a vasectomy about 2 years ago & it was easy-peasy. The recovery time was just over a weekend & no nookie for a few weeks afterwards. We didn't have any issues & I love, love, love never having to be on birth control ever again!

My husband found his urologist by asking a few of his buddies who had had vasectomies themselves (and one who had had a vasectomy reversal, successfully!). He heard 2 names come up several times, so he went to interview those doctors, and chose the one he liked best. His surgery was uneventful and although he did have a hard time with the recovery (tried to do too much, too soon, and didn't use the ice packs like they told him!) the results ended up being worth it!

My husband found a dr. through his normal clinic. The procedure took about 25 min, and recovery took about 3-4 days till he felt like 'normal' again. He did get a bit of an infection at the incision on one side, but cleared up with meds. Also, they told us it would take 2-3 months to give a sample with no mobility, but it took 6 months and 3 visits later for that to happen. I did have him go back twice after to "make sure" as we have 5 kids and didn't want any surprises. I love being free of the worry of birth control. Good luck!!
