I was wondering what is a good idea for my son to give to the step parent, He is very much treated like his son. And this is the real first Valentines and it is always fun to start a tradition. I was thinking along the lines of crafty things???

What can I do next?

I give my husband, who is the step-parent to my 3 kiddos a homemade card each year with pictures from the last year & of 'course they include pics of things with the kids. The first page is a giant "I", the second is a heart, and the 3rd is a giant "U", all made with pictures and the last page is random fun pics - it's become a cool tradition, and a great way to look back over the year of times with the ones you love.

Make a cute picture frame from craft stick, decorate it with puzzle pieces (the small pieces, go to a 2nd hand store and get a 500+ piece puzzle). Glue the pieces on upside down. Paint it red, pink, and white. After the paint is dry, write I Love You or Happy Valentine's Day or something and add some hearts. Then take a cute picture of your son and put it in the frame. Make sure to write his name and the year on the back so step-dad can always remember who and when. (Especially if you have several children eventually). Depending on the age of your son, he could help with it - this is a craft I learned from working in a preschool. Just monitor closely so you avoid a big mess!

Your question/concern is unclear. Is the child giving a valentine to a step-parent or vice versa? Does the step-parent treat the child as his/her own child? Reclarify and you might get some responses.

o.k. I am also not sure who the step parent in this situation is either... but I will say this, I think there must be a special place in heaven for step-parents (the good ones anyway). my step-dad is the greatest... and while i still love and speak to my father, my step-dad... well, he's "my dad" if you know what I mean. much more involved in my life than my dad ever was.

anyway... growing up I gave both my dad and step-dad cards that said "happy father's day" or "happy valentine's day dad" my whole life... both of them gave me away at my wedding (though it did look a little strange). anyway, I'm just saying... this guy, is being his "dad" so why not honor him that way.

and specificaly speaking on valentine's gifts.. last year my daughter gave her dad two books:

"daddy kisses" and "I love my daddy because..."... both are animal books, she loves them.. and they love to read them together. (they have mommy versions too). anyway, my husband really was touched by receiving them. plus they weren't very expensive.. and better than having a bunch of chocolate laying around the house that I'd just end up eating.

Thank you for respecting the Step Parents. I hope you make sure you do the same for both Step parents if there is a second one. I made sure that my girls made or got something for the step mother after their dad got married. I also made sure that my step sons got something for their mother when we had them and a holiday/birthday/mother's day was near. Thanks again. The step parent will like whatever is done from the child. Kay

Hi Amber,

You don't mention how old your son is, but it really doesn't matter. Have pictures of your son and his step dad? (I assume its a step dad.) The best gift my husband ever got was a collage we made from pics of him and his daughter together and pics from various stages in childs life. (we had divorced by then and money was tight, daughter loved picking out the pics and helping arrange them on a poster board we then framed.) Even if you only have one special photo of the two of them, have it blown up (at walmart) to poster size, or have it made into a tie, put on a coffee mug...ideas are endless when you have photos! Good luck, I'm sure whatever you do will both be special and appreciated!
