Vaginal Bleeding in a 7-Year Old

My daughter is going to be 8 in about two weeks. About a week ago, she started to bleed but never heavy, with no symptons, discomfort, discharge, lesions that I can see. She spots at least once a day. I made an appointment with a pediatric gynecologist but has anyone experienced this with their daughters? Is this early puberty or something more serious?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the response -- very helpful words from everyone! As a little more history, I did already take her for blood work (complete work up all normal) and an ultra sound of the kidneys and bladder and they did find the urethra slightly dilated, which could be the source of the bleeding and not the vagina, but I just don't know (vaginal bleeding is my unprofessional opinion) so I also have her scheduled to see a pediatric urologist as well. She, in the meantime, is as happy and as active as always while I am doing nothing but worrying about all of this. Thanks again!!

my daughter had mild (spotting) bleeding when she was 8 - she had fallen on the middle bar of her bike....doctor said it torn her hymen..

Good job getting her to the Dr!!

It could be the start of menses (oftentimes the first period is very, very light and has no ill symptoms). They're moving the "average" age of puberty younger and younger.

She could have been "experimenting" with her body and ended up cutting herself internally. Gently ask her if she's put anything inside her (don't be judgmental, remained concerned).

Or it could be something else entirely. You've done the right thing making an appointment. Unfortunately, waiting to find out what's going on with our babies is always the hardest part. :( I'll pray for you both!

Let us know what happens.

I started my period around her age. She may have started her period early. Alot of girls are starting earlier and earlier these days. Its good she is getting checked out. Could she possibly be wiping too hard? Hope you get it figured out soon. GL

I started spotting at 8 years old and got my first real period when I was 9. It is possible.

To be safe, I agree that you should take your child to the doctor to determine what is causing it.

Never experienced anything like this with our daughter.

I am glad you made an appt with the Dr. and chose not to "wait and see".

I hope everything works out for her (and you).

This is the first time I heard of a girl starting to bleed at such an early age. I am curious what other moms have to say.

she is spotting but with no period like symptoms ??
sounds like something serious, but rule out an early period or a kidney infection first. if it turns out that the answers are more sinister, demand answers, NOW.

Could be early puberty, some girls do have spotting before they actually get their period. She still is pretty young and I would discuss with the doctor regardless, that's a good idea.

It could be early puberty, I understand kids are experiencing that earlier and earlier. It does seem a bit early still. Definately get her checked out ASAP because this does not sound normal.

My neice had a similar experience about 2 months before her 9th birthday. Turned out to be her ovaries "preparing" themselves for puberty. I hope this is all it is :)

Could be UTI and she has a little spotting after going to the bathroom.

Though 7 is young, early menarche has become increasingly common over the years. It is good to follow up with a GYN though, it could be anything from an injury to a more serious medical problem.
If you have not taught her about her private parts yet, please make sure you do before your appointment comes around. The doctor will likely need to perform a pelvic exam on her and it would be very shocking for her if has never heard about anything like this. Make sure she is well prepared...
Good luck.
