Hi,
I need to know the best vaccuum for hard wood floors with the occasional area rug. I do not like the canister types, I prefer uprights. I had a bissell and may purchase it again if you mommies don't have a better idea. I just got a shark navigator, and although it does wonderful on rugs it is horrible on the floors. I don't feel like it is picking up anything. I hope amazon will take it back because I hate it. Any one in love with their vaccuum and have hard wood floors? BTW I don't have the budget for a Dyson. Please help!

What can I do next?

If you go with an upright it needs a way to turn the roller brush off, that beater brush is very harsh on hardwood floors.

I have both a swivel sweeper and a Dyson. I would think the SS would work just fine for you if the area rugs are very low pile. Otherwise, get something for the area rugs and use a broom on the wood-- nothing beats a broom!

I'm not sure what the going rate for an Oreck is, but we've had one for over 10yrs and still love it for our hardwood, area rugs, carpet and tile (and two very sheddy dogs!). We've had others along the way, thinking it would be easier to have a diff vacuum for the hardwood/tile, or thinking it would be easier to have a vac upstairs and a vac downstairs. Nothing has worked like the Oreck. Good luck!

Swivel Sweeper! There are three kinds, upgrades. The original, the red one and the plum colored one that is called the Elite. The red one doesn't work as well. The original or the latest Elite is the best. Great on wood floors. Works fine on rugs daily for surface cleaning and then pull out the big vac once a week for deeper cleaning. Our house is mainly wood floors and tile in the bath with just one large area rug in the living area. The elite comes with a tool to help clean the hair from the bristle brushes. This works great in corners and picking up most everything in its path. I've tried the Shark and it was useless! I'm talking about the rechargeable one. It was too high off the floor and just flung stuff around. It made a horrible sound, especially on the rug like it had to work way too hard or something. I bought 2 of the Swivel Sweeper Elite (plum) at Amazon and it came with 2 hand held kinds for your car, which works ok. Love my Swivel Sweeper!

*Wanted to add the for 2 I paid less than $60 with free shipping.

I like my bissell lift off vac. I have hardwood, carpet and tile and just a flip of the switch to shut the roller bar off and away I go on hard surfaces. However, I've never felt it does a complete job at picking up EVERYTHING on my hardwood so my OCD kicks in and I usually have to go back over it with a traditional broom to get the nooks and crannies. But I do like it, I actually own 2 of them, one for upstairs and one for down.

Well I finally splurged and bought a Dyson last year. I swear to God it has changed my whole life!! tehehe

I got it at Overstocks.com, it was $350, but they have some cheaper and some refurbs, and I know people who have bought refurbs and been very happy with them.

Works like a charm on the hardwoods, and goes from hardwood to area rug very easily.

It's just a whole other animal from the other vacs I've bought in the past. SOOO worth it!
