I live in Tualatin and am looking for a pediatrician/family doctor that would provide the mmr shot broken into three shots. My 5 yr old daughter has been on the regular vaccination schedule but had a reaction to the first mmr shot and my mom intuition is guiding me to find someone who would be willing to break it out into the mumps, measles and rubella individually. My ped and my family doctor wont do it because it costs them too much to order it that way. Anyone know of a doctor in the Portland area who could help with this. I am not necessarily looking to switch doctors, but want to get her set up for kindergarten. Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

Hi--

we went through something very similar in that our daughter had some reactions to shots early on and we decided to go with a delayed vaccination schedule. Early on, our doctor had the separate antigens for the MMR, but, the last time we went, she said they are no longer available since the manufacturers didin't find them profitable. Our doctor said that she feels the makers will bring them back if enough parents complain, though. For us, I said I would continue down the delayed vaccination schedule and we will wait it out. You can always claim a religious/philosophical exemption when signing your child up for school. Best of luck to you!

I would go see Dr. Kate Wiggin. She does house calls too. But if your daughter had a reaction, I would really follow that mom intuition, it's not worth further reactions. Good luck.

Very smart of you to be conscientious about this and protect your daughter. Dr. Paul Thomas on Barnes Road will split them up for you (he is our pediatrician) http://integrativepediatricsonline.com/. He is very knowledgeable about vaccinations and would be very helpful to you.

FYI, if you're uncomfortable with the vaccinations you can also decline to give them to her. Oregon's "religious exemption" rule is written very broadly in the law, allowing for even ethical or personal objections. You can just sign the religious exemption section of the vaccination form and leave it at that. No one will ask you for further information (they are prohibited by law from asking you for more), and you can still give your child all the vaccinations you want. You just go ahead and list what she HAS had for their information but then they won't require you to do the rest. I know it feels a little weird to sign a thing that says you "belong to a religion" etc, but the DHS has a pamphlet on this that makes it very clear about the legal language.

Good luck to you and your daughter.
