I am looking for information on the MMR and Varivax vaccinations. My daughter just had here 1yr shots and has been sick ever since with a low grade fever, irritability, and sleeplessness. I took her back to the doctor and he was not concerned in the least. He stated that a fever can develop 7 to 10 days after the shots and continue for a month!!! She had a fever the very next day. I am at a loss. I have been giving her IBprofin and tylenol everyday to keep her comfortable and don't feel like she should have so much medicine. Has anyone had this problem with shots?? I didn't think that having my child vaccinated would make her sick everytime. I feel like not getting it done. Can anyone give me some insight? HELP!! Thank you.

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank everyone who helped me. I received an overwhelming response. My daughter's fever has let up for now but it has been a very scary thing to go through. I am going to continue to research the subject carefully before making anymore decisions on vaccinations. I never imagined it was such a big subject.

Thanks again!!

That is a classic vaccine reaction. That makes me so mad that the dr's just blow it off. Vit c would be a good thing to give her. I would hesitate to keep giving the tylenol and ibuprofin. that is hard on the liver. http://thinktwice.com/mmr.htm here is some info on reactions (scroll down)

You are doing a great job trying to keep her comfortable. I have a daughter that had the same problem and the thing I had to remember was to try and strech out the med just like the other mother said because the fever is what is going to fight off what ever it is from the shots. As long as it is long grade like she said just try and hold off a little to let the fever do its work.

If I had it to do over, I would not give my kids all the vaccines. I would give them only the critical ones and would do them when the baby is older. Vaccines have some poisons in them that can affect the child like you are seeing.

Good luck,

Be sure your case gets reported to the department of health. When my husband received his MMRs as a baby, he literally passed out. The nurse told his mother everything would be okay, but it was just 7 years later he had visible symptoms of Crohn's disease (a scary immune system disorder). I would recommend finding a reputable homeopathic doctor - that's someone with an OD, and possibly even a really good acupuncturist. I know of a good OD, Dr. Remington in Provo,UT, but hopefully you can find one closer. I personally took a lot of thought and study into whether or not to immunize my two children and decided against it. I greatly sympathize that perhaps you didn't have the chance to do that before this happened.

On that note, there are a lot of books out there, one that I read is "Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective" by Neil Z. Miller

I think he gets a little upset in his book by what he finds in his research, but he gets his point across. Another that I found on Amazon is "The Immunization Resource Guide : Where to Find Answers to All Your Questions about Childhood Vaccinations" by Diane Rozario, and Midwest Book Review says:

"Now in a completely updated and expanded fourth edition, Diane Rozario's The Immunization Resource Guide: Where To Find Answers To All Your Questions About Childhood Vaccinations continues to be a complete, single volume reference for parents concerned with providing their children with appropriate medical services. Included are reviews of more than ninety books covering virtually all aspects of childhood immunizations; detailed listings of more than 130 vaccine and health organizations, periodicals, and publishers; coverage of such issues as vaccines and the immune system; international travel; a history of vaccination; how to report vaccine injuries; the DPT vaccine; obtaining legal exemptions; new generation vaccines; and vaccine adverse reactions. The The Immunization Resource Guide is superbly written, outstandingly presented, "parent friendly" compendium of information and resources, and a very highly recommended addition to any family, health clinic, medical center, or community library parenting and health/medicine reference collection."

I haven't read this one but it sounds very good.

Take your time to decide. You can always go get shots for your child, it is much more difficult to undo the effects as you have found.

Generally the department of health provides waivers for immunizations, the only requirement I have found is that you will be told to keep your child home if there is an outbreak (which any sane parent would do anyways).

I think the hardest part of this for me is the many people I meet who disagree and some are ready to fight me on it (usually family), but I stand my ground because I have taken my time to study it out and come to a certain conclusion in my mind and also to pray about it. Good luck to you.

Hi there, I completely agree with you, I ommitted the shots altogether, I do not want to scare you, because as a mom, the welfare of you child is the most important thing in your life.
My neighbours grandchild got very ill following the mmr shot and eventially passed away after a week, the docters swears hihg and low that the shot has nothing to do with her passing, but she was a very healthy baby before that had hardly had a cold, the family sued the docter, they settled with the family, but since then there has been allot of issues with that shot, kids who ended up metally retarded from it, parents keep quiet because what is you word against a docters, and there is many children who has this shot and have no side effects. We are a very healthy family and try to eat and live the way God has intended it and vaccines is a bunch a chemicals that we do not need in our bodies
There is book out, if you want to know more, it is called
Natural Cures by Kevin Trudeau, this guy has uncovered allot of stuff , this book is in all the book stores, it is very interesting and very shocking at the same time, but anybody who value the lives of their children should read this, because they are a gift and we should do our best to keep them healthy.
I would go to the health food store and see if there is anything they can give her, but hang in there,my niece had the same reaction with that shot and she was fine after a week and half, that was 7 years ago and has not have a shot since then and is doing great.

M.,
I know that you can find info to support any opinion and what do you believe? Obviously starting with moms on this website was a great idea. My personal opinion comes from a horrible experience with my own son. It was not his MMR but his DTP that made me stop giving him shots all together. He developed Infantile spasms which is a severe form of epilepsy which can cause brain damage. An immunization could have been the problem. It is so scary! I never ever considered NOT giving him shots until it was too late. Anyways, if I were you I would start with the CDC website first. They are obviously pro-immunization but if you read the risks. . . even they can't deny that immunizations cause horrible thing in "a small percent" of children. Well, when you child could fall into that "small percent" you take it pretty seriously. Good luck on your journey to the right decision for your child!

She might me allergic to the shot. I have a friend her son got his shots and he then started have siezures. And then she went to natural healist and found out he was allergic to those shots. She has done several treatments to get him back to normal, and I think they were able to get that out of his system and sofar he doesn't have siezures anymore. I would try going to a natural healist or try naet treatments. You can find naet on line for more information.

Just hang in there, I know how you feel. And go with your gut feelings, they really do help. Hope this information helps.

It is very normal for children to develop a fever after receiving vaccinations. I always give tylenol every four hours for at least 24 hours after. They may make her feverish, but the alternative, getting one of the diseases your are vaccinating her from, would be worse.

There are these types of reactions that can occur, they are VERY rare. If your Dr isn't worried, then if you are worried, get a second opinion. Is her eating compromised, her over all activity level? It very well could be teething as it seems that is also those signs in teething.
I would say look in her mouth to see if her gums are swollen or red.
I have to say, there is this slight risk with vaccination, but NOT doing it puts your child in far worse danger. Don't let one reaction mislead you to thinking not doing it is best. I saw on the news here this morning (7 news) how not vaccinating is causing mumps, measles and whooping cough to come back, her getting these would be far worse then some mild side effects.
You know your child best and if she is truly miserable, seems to be not doing better, take her in again or get another opinion! Hugs.

Just wanted to respond to what someone wrote about going to a homeopathic dr because they will give shots without preservative. The preservative free shot is available to every dr and if you ask any pediatrician or any dr they will have them in stock or can simply order that one if that is what you wish. My son is 20 months and has had all of his shots until he is 4 and has never had a reaction or a fever. I have worked in healthcare for almost 12 years and have seen one or two cases of a reaction to a shot(vaccine) and it was a mild allergic reaction in both cases that was treated with Benedryl. I read alot of negative posts about vaccines and not too many positive so I thought I would reassure those of us that believe in modern medicine and have never had problems with vaccines. I have a quite a few friends with autistic children, none of whom believe that a vaccine caused their childs illness. Also, in olden days, when there were not vaccines, please research how many people died or were maimed from german measles, measles, polio, had lockjaw from tetanus and various other horrible diseases that can now be cured

Hi, M.!

I feel the need to respond to you regarding this passionate topic!!
I am so sorry your little daughter is under the weather after being vaccinated. It is actually a very common response following them, but if this continues, DEFINITELY become proactive and seek the advice of another pediatrician!
I am so very tired of hearing how vaccinations cause this or that..., and YES, they are toxic, that is how they work in actually preventing the disease itself. Honestly, these diseases can be so devastating, and do you really want to take the chance? While it is true that adverse reactions and side effects occur and in a very small percentage of children could be fatal, this is usually not the case. I think it is easier for people to "blame" vaccines for their child's behavior problem (come on!!) or other unfortunate circumstances that occur. When you read something, please consider how reliable and valid the source is; some people will write anything to get your attention and/or make a buck. Also, I would never take my child to someone who is not licensed as a medical professional. ALL children will eventually get sick, even if they do not attend daycare, and we ALL ingest toxins in our bodies, no matter how much organic food we ingest or how we live, because we cannot live in a bubble and are all exposed to germs in the outside world on a daily basis.
So, yes, you will have to make your own decisions re:shots. I think it is foolish to put your child at risk for contracting these serious illnesses by not complying, and I do feel bad for those few who have truly had bad experiences, but the state of CO will not improve its poor rate for vaccination compliance until parents recognize the importance of disease eradication and are willing for their little ones suffer a bit to avoid a huge future headache!
I hope your daughter is feeling better by now.
P.S. I would hold off on the Motrin and Tylenol after so many consecutive doses. It is hard on the G.I. tract and the liver!

Vaccinations have been know to kill children, cause autism, mental retardation and numerous other illnesses. They contain things that shouldn't be put in a child's body. The doctors will scare you into getting them, but if you ask them if they immunize their own kids, if they are honest they will tell you no. My own doctor said he felt they were too dangerous for his OWN kids, but touted them to all his pediatric patients. There is more of a chance to get the disease you are trying to stop than keeping your child from getting it. Give your child good foods, lots of fresh air, sunshine and exercise (can't start too young). KEEPING her healthy is so much better than trying to get her well. Do your own research on the dangers of immunizations. Don't let your doctor use scare tactics on you. It may seem like I am doing the same thing, but again I will say, do your own due diligence and be informed. Hope your daughter feels better. I have never heard of the information that your doctor gave you. Sounds crazy to me. In the meantime, use warm, wet cloths on the shot site. Sounds like she may be allergic to them.

Hi M.,

It looks like you've gotten lots of advice, so I'll only add a piece or two :)

First, you, as the parent, can make a report to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS). Especially since your doctor didn't do it, you should. It is not the doctor's or your job to determine if the effects are from the shot when you submit this report. You just have to have made a connection. It is their job, when they get all the reports, to look and see if there is statistical significance that may warrant further study or warnings. Adverse reactions are vastly unreported, and maybe if more doctors quit thinking they knew better than the parent, we'd have accurate data to determine whether more testing was needed on the vaccines. (My son had seizures after his 4 month shots, and the dr. never told me about VAERS and my right to submit a report, even if she wasn't going to do it - I had to find out on my own, and I did send in the report - he's fine now, but shots on hold)

Second, The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears, published November 2007, is phenomenal about presenting a balanced viewpoint on vaccines and offering options to the traditional shot schedule. You can also get the MMR split into its specific components to give to your daughter individually if you wish. American Academy of Peds recently changed their stance on the MMR, recommending waiting until 15 months, so that's something to talk with your doctor about too.

Third, if you don't feel your doctor is listening to you and taking your concern seriously, it may be time to see another doc in that practice or look elsewhere. Once your trust in your doctor's opinion and advice is gone, you don't have a person in that position of knowing things medically that may be important to your child's health that you can trust and value. It's not a great place to be when your child becomes really sick and you question whether your doc has his/her best interests in mind.

Good luck. You're the mom. Trust your gut and your daughter's signals.
H.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter not feeling well; I can imaging how taxing it is for you too. My husband and I decided not to give the MMR shot because of the reactions to this ( it is one of the worst shots as far as documented cases of sickness following). I would recommend going to Tricia Kloor, of Kloor Chiropratics on 76th and Sheridan. She can help and suggest things for your daughter to relive some of the side effects. She also gives free classes on vaccination and what your doctor isn't telling you, and I think there is one at the end of the month. I absolutly love her! We aren't a whole natural, organic, green family, but we really value all of her insight that she gives. I 've taken my daughter since she was 3 weeks ( we have had about 4-5 visits) and was there last week because my baby is about to turn 1 and was not sleeping well again. Please call her, she is very well qualified and specializes in children. HOpe this helps!

We actually stopped vaccinating our children years ago because of what we learned after extensive research on the subject. I would suggest reading everything you can get your hands on, talking to other parents, naturopaths, midwives - anyone you trust - and making future decisions based on what you learn rather than on what your doctor and others tell you to do. Midwives and naturopaths can be great sources of information on both sides of the subject - but you must make your own decisions. If you'd like to contact me personally, I would be happy to give you names and numbers of a few midwives and naturopaths in the Boulder area who would be happy to speak with you about vaccinations...

M.,
here is the link
with 91 advices on this very same topic,
including mine, but my case is really unique: I made a choice,
and it perfectly worked for my three children
which does not prove it is a right choice for everyone.

Please, see
http://www.mamasource.com/request/2428836712500166657

and I hope Your daughter will start feeling better soon !!!

This is what I wrote on that page:
"it is strictly parents' choice, this is true.
I can only share what I did: I have three kids, none of them ever never got any shots, at all. More to it, my daughter was born in the woods, complete wilderness, no doctors, no medical help. It is extreme, I know, and I do not say it is right for everyone.
As for our family, no diseases, no problems with health except for the regular flu which is good, as it keeps the immune system active, and then also, only natural remedies, such as herbs, warmth, honey.
For the organizations such as school, I signed a paper, that I have religious reasons for refusing immunization shots.
I do not belong to any official religion, but I am very 'spiritual' as they say, believing that we are children of Nature and cannot dismiss this fact.

The choice is yours, I just let you know there are such people out here, who make their decisions against the common trend.

oh, my kids are 17, 23, 25 now, all healthy and happy;
when still at school, they had almost straight A's without me pushing them, and now very successful in life."

I wish You all the very best.

P.S. All my life, I seek to know more about how our 'ancient ones' - people of the times when there was no medicare - were treating illnesses: natural ways. I ask old people, and read books about it: there is SO MUCH WISDOM: we really do not need all the medications that are provided by therapists, especially for little things, as out here in the Nature, there are so many things that heal.
In big issues, when surgery is the only solution, our doctors really do miracles, but in little things, I prefer to battle it on my own.
We are not supported to make such choices: remember the 'system', the big pharmacy business, and their will of keeping us people dependent. Knowing about natural healing methods gives you a lot of independency.
There will be very many who disagree with me, and it is fine.
Each has their own path. I just shared, which path I took.

Be well, dear ones!

Did you ask him why he's not concerned about this? Did you ask him if this may indicate other symptoms/reactions that you need to look for?

I would ask a few more pediatricians in your town about it.

Here is an interesting article on vaccinations: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/government-conc...

I noticed mild behavioral changes in my 16 yo after his 4th round of vaccines - its caused a lot of problems for him in school. My 3 yo still got his first 2 rounds of vaccines even though I was uncomfortable with it. I did a lot of research on it, found tons of conflicting information but the only studies I could find on it were funded by the drug companies.

I'm not going to continue with vaccinations with my 3yo and my 2 mo old isn't starting. The only vaccines they are getting are the ones for hepatitis.

Even though vaccines are not mandatory I get a strong reaction to this decision: "If there's an outbreak they won't be able to go to school." Well, if there's an outbreak I don't WANT them to go to school. The only way to determine if the vaccine was successful is to expose them.

My kids almost always felt lousy for 3-5 days after shots. I think you are doing the right thing keeping her comfortable with pain medication if she needs it. You could try spacing it out as long as possible before giving her more - especially to see if she's still irritable or if it's just the fever. And if she's just running a low-grade fever and she is acting normally, you could probably skip the pain meds all together.

It is hard to watch your child be uncomfortable for a while after vaccinations, but if you stop to think what she'd go through if she were to catch any of the diseases vaccines help prevent her from catching, it's worth it.

Hi. I can see you have received a lot of good advice. I feel strongly that you should do some research on the whole topic of vaccines before you move forward and give her more shots. I have read of several cases where vaccinations produced mild reactions the first or second time given, and then terribly severe reactions the next time they were given. If you give your child vaccinations while having doubts about whether or not it is a good idea, and she has a severe reaction, you will have a hard time forgiving yourself. Please do the research and make sure you are completely comfortable with the vaccinations before you give her any more. www.mercola.com has good information on vaccinations and possible delayed and spaced out vaccination schedules.
Also, Dr. Sears has a new book out, called the vaccine book. He talks about how to space them out to decrease the risk of reactions. I have read probably 15 books on this subject, as well as numerous articles on the topic as research before deciding what to do with my little girl. She is 22 months, and has never had a vaccination. Even if she were to get measles or mumps, I would not regret my decision at all. I feel confident in my decision, and I urge you to do the research that you need to do to feel confident on the decisions you make on this issue before going any further. Good luck. This is a really tough topic, and I wish you the best as you sort through information on both sides.

Is she teething?? I ask just because you mention the sleeplessness. My son, who is now 5 had a horrible time sleeping for months because of getting teeth. Also with teething doctors have told me that kids can have a low fever with getting teeth-usually below 101 though. You can get teething tablets that are natural, non-medicated. I liked them. As for shots, if my kids did get a fever from the shots it only lasted for a day or two. Also my son got a small rash from the MMR shot, which is pretty common. I think vaccinations are good, some people choose to wait until their kids are 2 before starting them. I never did. So maybe check your daughters mouth for swollen gums. One year molars could be appearing. I hope this helps. Sick kids is so hard!!

Origionally, I wrote something saying my daughter had a mild reaction, with a low grade fever and a rash, which is true. It happened about a week after she got the shot and the symptoms were gone about 1 week after that. Some of the responses read kinda made me scared, so here is some info that I had.

Our dr had a full page handout on each vaccine that the parents are supposed to read, and then we could ask questions before the shot is given. I knew what to expect if symptoms occur and what the warning signs would be if she needed to go back.

This was really helpful. I feel nothing is wrong with most vaccines, and I also have been given them throughout my life. Your right to be worried especially since this is your first. Remember if you don't like your dr, shop around; get a second opinion. Don't be afraid to offend one dr by finding another you prefer; keep in mind the child is yours not the dr's, and in most cases your child is just a paycheck. Finding a dr who you feel takes your concerns seriously, and see your child the way you do makes a huge difference. It took me a while to get used to that idea...my daughter is 2.5 and very healthy.

Hope this helps.

I had a very similar experience with the DPT shot. My second baby had a bad reaction to the first one and the doctor acted like he just happened to get sick at the same time and a fever (104) was no big deal. They were unconcerned and acted like I was silly for questioning it. He got the second round and had the same (but worse) reaction. That was his last vaccination. I know this is not supported by everyone, but I plan to to vaccinate until his body is bigger and better able to handle the shots. Here is what I think about the entire issue. It is completely fear based. The pro vaccine people make you feel like a terrible, irresponsible parent if you don't vaccinate because of the danger your child is in. The anti vaccine people make you feel that you will risk major problems for your kid if you do vaccinate. All of them use fear, making it a challenge to get good info. Each parent needs to make their own choices and not be judged. It depends on where you live, where you visit, your child's reactions, etc. Don't let people guilt you one way or the other. The library is FULL of books on the subject. I have chosen to pick and choose vaccines for my kids and do an alternative schedule and will never do multiple shots at a time, even when the nurse makes a comment.

Hello,
I had the same thing happen to my daughter. It worsened on the 8th day after the shot which was considered to be the course of a vaccination reaction. She was having similar problems as you described plus what seemed to be nervous system problems. She ended up at the hospital. Some doctors agreed it was completely from the vacciantion and others wouldnt even go there.

So, I started to do research on the subject and found a lot more
controversy than expected. I also learned that doctors wont go there because its too controversial plus some get perks from vaccination companies. Meanwhile my daughter checked out and was not the same, it was so scary. BUT.....I went to whole foods and found this homepathic spray for detoxing from vaccinations. I had never used homeopathics, but I used it
for a week and she completely snapped out of it and was fine.
I think it was the company Vittel or something. I can look
better for you in my kit when I return home tomorrow, im travelng right now. Feel free to call me to ###-###-####

All the best, I feel for you.
K.

Have you thought about delaying or spacing out your child's vaccinations? Most pediatricians will do this if you give them notice that you want them spaced. Many vaccinations are a group of a few different vaccinations but they can be given individually. This would probably lessen the side effects although you would to make more trips to the peds office.

M.,
I just went through a month and half of our daughter being sick. Not from shots, but various illnesses. Unless her fever gets up to 105, it is just her body working the way it is designed. If it gets up to 105, I would immediately take her in. Or, if it is lower than that, and she just isn't acting "normal", go with your gut and take her in. I know it is VERY hard to see them not feeling well, and miserable, but you are right, she shouldn't have all of that medication. We just made sure she stayed hydrated, was eating and sleeping as much as possible. The very first night we decided to "ride out the fever" was tough, but she did come through it just fine.
There are alot of websites and such out there that you can research vaccinations...I don't have any in front of me, but a few months ago I asked the question..."to immunize or not" on this website...I got MANY responses, and alot of them listed various websites. You could find that posting and just read through the responses.
The bottom line is, You are her Mother, and you have do what you feel is best for your daughter.
Best wishes for both of you!
As far as your Dr not being the least bit concerned, if you truly feel that something is wrong...get a second opinion. That is your right.

Don't do the vaccinations! They are being linked to autism and other severe neurological disorders because of the mercury-based preservatives used in the vaccines.

First, I am sorry to hear that your little one is not feeling well. It is always hard to see your child under the weather. I am a mother of a little 2 1/2 year old boy and a second on the way, and I have been doing quite a bit of research into the whole Vacination thing and how it can cause various affects on our children......MMR icluded. If I may suggest I am reading a great book Titled, "What Your Doctor may NOT Tell You About Children's Vaccinations" ISBN#0-446-67707-8. Read it if you can, it is loaded with a wealth of information that you may be surprised about. Another good source of info can be found on the web at generationrescue.org I would strongly encourage anyone to look into reading some of these articles. However the website has a list of precautionary measures you can take for future reactions. As for now, I would be persisitent with the DR.. You know your daughter better than anyone and if you feel she just isn't getting well or isn't where she should be I would go back and voice your concerns. I hope you find the book and website to be invaluable resources. Best of luck!

M.,
How high is her fever? This is the advise that I received when my daughter had a fever for three days. If it is under 102 let her body do the work. Keep her in light clothes and covers when she is sleeping. A luke warm bath can also help. Keep her hair damp too that help her stay cool. If it is over 104 (I know it seems high.) then give her meds. If it stays over 104 after the meds then go to the doctor. Make sure they check her ears and ask about a strep test. I hope your little one is feeling better. =)

After checking both sides of the fence with vaccinations my husband and I decided not to have our children vaccinated. We personally know of 2 families whose children were normal until they were vaccinated and boom, they are now vegtables. It is a game of russian roulette. We had gone to a class where there had been studies of crib death being linked to vaccinations. We just felt that we would do our best to make sure our children have good immune systems by eating fruits, vegtables, nuts, seeds, grains, legumes, ect. I was raised as a junk- a- holic so it has been a long hard transition for me but I think we have finally arrived to where it is getting easier to get off of the white sugar, white flour and all the chemicals that are put into our foods. I don't mean to scare you but I wish you would explore all angles not just from the medical side of things but try the alternative side too. Any good health food store should be able to give you a different point of view. The fever is fighting off the bad and is good that her body reconizes a forien object. The health food store will have something more natural to help keep her comfortable. I would not subject her to IBprofin and tylenol for it is interrupting the fevers job and is toxic. Keep up the good work!!
