What would you consider a reasonable *ballpark* amount to spend on a 5 day/4 night vacation for a family of 4...including airfare, car rental, food, and spending money?

Way too vague.

Airfare pp will be between 200-300 depending where you are going and depending on the airline-you may pay for bags, etc.... 4 nights at a okay hotel-$350. Car rentals vary widely depending on where you are going and 4 days doesn't qualify for their weekly rate so you'll be paying more.
Food will depend on if you have a kitchen or are eating out and spending money-well that could be anywhere depending on what you plan on doing.

My guestimate would be around $3000.

We don't fly, because it's too damn expensive. We drive, so we save on that, plus the car rental. We normally go somewhere with a beach & stay where we can cook our own food for some of the time. So, we can get by on 1k or so.

Well, where are you thinking of going? What type of rental car would you get? Car, SUV, minivan? You didn't mention hotel in your post, so you'd have to add that in. Are you luxury people, or will a cheap hotel be ok for you? Food costs depend on where & how you eat - are you eating out the whole time, or staying where you can cook? Fast food, sit down, 5 star dining? What would you be doing for entertainment/outings?

I don't think I can answer any of your questions without more info, honestly. There are too many variables. What is your budget? Because what is reasonable to M. may not be what's reasonable to you - I am a cheapskate & like to save wherever I can. If I were to spend 5k on a vacation, I'd better be going somewhere tropical!! I think you'd be better off adding more details, or searching for prices online.

We are in the middle of planning something along those lines and will probably spend about $3500-4000. This is a splurge trip for us, we usually visit family or friends and spend far less.

Airfare is a big part of it, it was almost 1/2 our budget ($1300) to fly three people to/from KC to Philadelphia and that wasn't even non-stop.

We stayed 8 nights with family so rooms were free, but we bought a lot of our own food and treated family to dinners/snacks as often as we could as a thank you.

Rental car was $350.

Food/activities/spending money was $880 (we spent a lot on a steam train ride, whale watcher cruise, oodles of boardwalk fun and of course, ice cream!).

Dog/cat/house sitter was $315.

So even with free places to stay and cooking most of our meals at home, we spent around $3000. If my family didn't open their homes to us we'd never get to go on that kind of vacation!

First and foremost, a reasonable amount is limited to whatever you can comfortably take from savings. Any vacation that has to be put on a credit card to be financed, it is too expensive.

As long as the money is available, I think a reasonable cost depends on what you want to see and do. Last year, we went to Disney, and it would've easily been $5k+ for 4 of us. I'm looking at Disney Cruises out of Galveston (to avoid airfare) for 2 of us for 7 days for appx $3000 (plus spending, tips). We went to the beach this year for a week, for 4 of us, it about $3,000 - 3500for airfare, rental car, spending money and hotel (condo with a kitchen, so less food expense). We could go to Branson for about that same price. What always seems to get us is the cost to get into attractions...theme parks, museums, mini golf, etc add up ridiculously fast. I guess I'd say a reasonable amount for 5 days and airtravel is about $3000 - 5500 depending. If you were asking without airfare and rental car, I'd probably say appx $1500.

Where are you going? Theme parks? Island? Cruise? Time of year?

My husband and I booked a trip to St. James, Montego Bay in Jamaica. It includes flight, shuttle to resort, taxes, insurance, (god forbid we had to cancel or there was a hurricane) ALL INCLUSIVE resort (hotel, meals, liquor).... We got it for almost 2,600.00 for the 2 of us :)

I agree--it is what you can afford. We look for ways to save on travel. We have starting staying in private homes rather than hotels and save about 50 % on that.

Where are you going? What are you doing?

Airfare is going to cost you AT MINIMUM $1000. Car rental will run you $300-$500 for the week (including gas). Food, depends on how old your children are and your style of eating. When we are on vacation with the kids, we go to family-style places which is vastly different than where we go on our own.

I would say at MINIMUM you will be spending $2500, but I would budget for more than that. You don't want to be saying "no" the entire time you are vacationing. Keep in mind that a place like Disney is going to run you $100 per person J. to walk into the park!

Less than 2k. Can you actually do this? probably not. We J. were away for 6 nights, renting a lovely 3 bedroom house. The house cost us $650, we split it with another family. All in, we spent less than 1k for a week away for a family of 4. It was a terrific beach holiday too!

With that said, we go to Ireland every 2 or 3 years to visit hubby's parents. It usually costs us about 6k.

Do look into VRBO. So much cheaper than hotels, and you get a kitchen so you can save on food! Also think about driving. It saves a fortune.

I think reasonable is what you can afford.

Whether that's $500 or $50,000
