Ever since my husband and I got married 3 years ago I've been having issues with chronic UTIs. I am sure it is because we are a very active sexually, Sorry if thats TMI. I have tried everything the dr suggested...peeing before and after sex, washing before and after sex (both of us), wearing cotton panties, not holding it, etc etc I will go months without one, then have one after another. Its to the point where I do not want to have sex just because I don't want to feel funky down there. Kwim? Cranberry juice/supplements do NOTHING for me. AZO only relieves the pain, it doesn't cure it and I hate having to take antibiotics. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can prevent a UTI? Maybe a natural supplement? I have heard of d-mannose. Has anyone tried that and had success? I have been to my ob and I do not have any STDs or anything like that. He said some women are just more prone to getting UTIs. :( Help...please!

What your doc said is the truth. Me, my sisters and my mother are all just prone to them. I go through all the same things where sex is concerned with my hubby. It's a pain and it's just a shot in the dark as to whether it will keep it away or not. I pretty much know that if I have sex I have a possibility of getting one. I hate the UTIs too but I think I've just learned to live with it. One thing that I did have a doc do was to give me a script for an antibiotic in a low dose that I could take before having sex, or shortly after, that would try to ward off any potential bacteria/infections. I would have used it if I hadn't been breastfeeding at he time b/c it gave irritated my little one's digestive track but it makes sense and I am totally NOT a medicine person but have learned that this is one thing that I have to take antibiotics for b/c it never goes away on it's own and always seems to strike at the most inconvenient times (i.e. on a weekend or before a trip out of town.)

You need to see a Urologist there is no other greater advice than it coming from a specialist.I have chronic pain down below, over active bladder & Intercystal Cystitus (very painful condition)You didn't mention if it's coming from your OB or primary care Dr but any Dr. would have referred someone with back to back UTIs by now mine did ASAP.Do you have blood & puss in your urine can it be seen after you pee or is it showing up on the UTI cultures or strips they do in office?Your issues may be from sex maybe not & needs to be treated a different way.Drink water & only water anything else that acidifies your urine is a no no until you know for sure what your diagnosed with, you say UTI's but have they ran cultures?Do they do strait caths to get the most accurate reading of your urine? There are many microscopic particals down below it's impossible to clean well enoough to get a negative culture, wiping front to back.Yes some women are more prone to getting them but there is a reason why

UGH! You must be so frustrated!
For a period of 4 years, I had gotten a UTI at least once a month/every month. It was horrible. It turned out to be a kidney stone that just woldn't pass. Not many doctors think to look for this. If it's cronic for too long, make a suggestion to your doc. Good luck. :(

You have to get your bacterial balance back in order. Try using Probiotics and eating loads of yogurt. They say that is only effective for yeast and such, but it worked for me. I was always getting UTIs, bacterial infections etc... I had these problems for years until I became preggo. It has been two years since i had my son and still have not had one problem. I know it is because I was taking probiotics and eating lots of yogurt with live cultures. Also, drink LOADS of water to flush your system out. I think that had a lot to do with it too, bc when I was preggo I drank at least a half gallon a day and I have continued that ever since. Good luck!

I know you don't like antibiotics but sometimes having the doctor check you both out and prescribe preventative ones (i.e. hubby takes them for a week before)
Like Littlepiggietoes I too have IC. If you can it would be good to find and go a gyno-uro. They are a specialty within a specialty and tend to treat IC when some regular uro's won't.
All my uros always said to stay away from the cranberry as it is too acidic. Blueberry and pear juice was recommended. Granted the blueberry juice can be pricey if you don't make your own. Not the "cocktail" stuff because of the high sugar. Blueberry capsules from the Natural Foods or Health food store work well. Another herb good for urinary problems is Devil's Claw. Unfortunately I built up a tolerance to it:(

I am prone to UTI's too, and it also seems to relate to intercourse with me as well, despite all the preventative measures you mentioned.

I have not found a solution to this yet, but I have heard of some doctors who will prescribe antibiotics to keep on hand, and people have been advised to take one pill after intercourse, to ward off an infection. That seems like a lot of antibiotics, but maybe it's a lesser evil than the actual infection, and then a full course of antibiotics to follow it.

I'm pregnant now, but after this pregnancy/breastfeeding is over, I may see if that's a route my doc will go.

Well, this might sound "ya know", but I remember a married girlfriend of mine telling me, years ago, that she was having the same problem. She too was married and very sexually active. Her doctor asked her if her husband was putting his fingers in the "back end", lol, and then reinserting it into her "front end"...She said yes and stopped him from doing that in the future...The problem magically went away...If not the issue, then good luck to ya..

Ok so I used to suffer from them too. You have to clear it up and then get back to sex. Clear it up with yes, mannose is good but make sure it has uva ursi in it too. You should stay away from sugar, ALL sugar, that means corn syrups, cane juice, maltodextrin all sorts of other names for the stuff. you need to stay away from flour products too. Someone mentioned probiotics. Yes, you can take them but I suggest getting NON dairy ones. Cow's milk has certain sugars and proteins that aren't conducive to human healing. If you're drinking cranberry juice that's a tough call. Does it has sugar in it? Most do. Other people mix other fruits in because they find cranberry too bitter. I would suggest mannose instead with uva ursi because it's much more concentrated and you're avoiding the sugar.
One other thing is to make sure you are properly lubricated before intercourse.
Jen O made another good point, make sure that you keep your ends apart, anal stays anal and vaginal stays vaginal.
Antibiotics are far from the only way to treat infections. I've healed several infections thru diet and herbal remedies.

Unfortunately, once you get and INFECTION you can only treat it with antibiotics. If not, the bacteria will fester, multiply, cause more discomfort, and can travel out of the urinary tract to the bladder and then the kidneys. At that point, women are hospitalized for IV antibiotics. If it gets too bad, the infection can get in the blood stream and cause a condition called Sepsis which could untimately cause death in some cases. Of course this is the worse case scenario, point is.. you should get preventative antibiotics that you take on a daily basis or you take them after intercourse. The most common "prophylactic" antibiotic is Macrobid. I take it but every once in a while I still get a UTI that I have to take other antibiotics for. There really isn't a "natural" supplement, the UTI is cause by bacteria that enters the urethra so there really is no other way to treat the UTI other than antibiotics.
