UTI Anyone????

I have many issues with UTIs, well more than I'd like to have. Very uncomfortable and aggravating. I don't really know what set mine off but I'm guess it is the tendency to "hold off" going to the bathroom and sexual activities. I know its not good to wait to pee.....and I know peeing after sex helps but that is not always possible. It is to the point that anything sexual is not appealing to me because I don't wanna end up with a UTI. They dont always occur after sex and we try to be extra "clean" but that doesn't always help either. Any suggestions? Quick remedies? Am I alone on this one?? Help!!! Thanks mammas!!

What can I do next?

I have a friend that has constant UTIs and she takes a cranberry tablet everyday. Also, if you are using rubbers or are one birth control then you have more or a chance of getting UTIs. You might want to mention it to a doctor and let him/her prescribe a antibiotic ointment.

I had this issue as well! And yes, i have to get up and pee after sex everytime or i will not sleep for fear of a UTI. We also try to make sure we are both showered and i always take a cranberry pill after sex, and the few days that follow. I have not had one for over a year now-and all the extra stuff may seem burdensome-but not as burdensome as a UTI.

I suggest that you add a cranberry pill to your daily routine or drink cranberry juice regularly. This works for some and not for others. You just have to try it out.

I also suggest adding a pro-biotic pill to your daily routine. There are more live and a variety of cultures in the pill than in yogurt. I started taking a pro-biotic pill a few years ago. Whenever I slack off for a couple of weeks I feel the difference just in the general way I feel.

Many years ago I was having so many UTI infections that the doctor gave him a pyelogram to see if I had an ongoing infection in my kidneys. They were OK. Then the UTIs suddenly stopped as suddenly as they had begun repeating themselves. Perhaps our bodies are just better at protecting its self at some times then others?

You might ask your doctor about possible causes and treatments. It may be that using a different position or refraining from using a certain position might help.

Also it could be caused by irritation during sex. If you use a "water based" lubricant you may notice a difference. Make sure your detergent and fabric softener you are using on your delicates are FREE of harsh chemicals so that is not irritating you also.

If you don't have cranberry pills or juice, I have found that 1000mg. of vitamin C twice a day will acidify my urine and that keeps the bacteria from clinging to the walls of my bladder and prevents it or aleviates the symptoms.

I've had some luck with the ideas other moms mentioned, but also with a supplement called "grapefruit seed extract" otherwise known as GSE (I like the Nutrabiotics [?] brand). I'll do that for a couple of days (1-2 2X per day) after intercourse. Be careful - GSE kills yeast, too, so if you use too much at first you will get a die-off effect. Of course always seek professional advice regarding the use of supplements.

That being said - once the infection takes "hold" I usually need an antibiotic to beat it out.

The key is to prevent them before they get going strong. Good luck - I know how frustrating that issue can be.

Cleaning your vaginal area before and after (showering) sex always helps as well as peeing. I am bad at putting off using the restroom and have paid the price by having more then a fair share of UTIs...I have had to get into the habit of NOT holding it AND drinking water before bed and when I wake during the night. I rather wake up to have to pee then to wake up in pain and feeling like i have to pee but cant. I have a few friends that take cranberry pills regurlary aswell. Stay clean and PEE! lol

I read through all the replies and agree with everything that has been said but noticed no one mentioned making sure you wipe front to back. It is something simple and easy ( you may already be doing this) but is super important. Wiping from back to front can give you a UTI in a hurry. I do want to reinforce that if you are trying all of these things and you continue to develop UTIs you should definitely notify your doctor and start taking an antibiotic with sex to prevent them before they happen. Good luck.

Know what you mean! It does make you think twice about wanting all that foreplay...but give up sex? No way!
My urologist gave me a prescription of an antibiotic to take after having sex, one pill afterward. It is as bad as the trip to the bathroom afterward... Well, like you it doesn't always occur so I second guess it and try not taking the pill... well recently I didn't and then I took one at the onset of signs and wa la! it seemed to nip it in the bud... but that isn't how the doctor told me to use it.. so I'm not sure that is a recommendation. But, I have had less UTI's since I started using the prescription. Maybe you should ask your doctor what he recommends? I can't recall what the name of the prescription is...or I would share...

I bet you don't drink a lot of water either. I am like you. I do the same and hold off goingto the bathroom too. When it comes to being intimate, I refrain from oral stimulation. That helped a bunch. I don't miss it because I was parariod about getting an uti from it, anyway.

You can also drink cranberry juice regularly. I usually don't because I just don't think about drinking like I should.

I am sorry to hear of your problem and I can tell you I used to have the same problem. One thing that can help you is to drink cranberry juice daily. There are also some over the counter cranberry remedies. However, it may be something you are eating or drinking. This is the reason I was getting them so frequently. It took me quite awhile to figure it out on my own that Red Dye 40 was what did it to me, but there are tests that your doctor can run. This may be kind of expensive at first depending on your insurance, but in the long run much worth the initial cost. If the tests don't reveal anything try cutting different things from your diet. I cut 5 things for two months each until I got to the group that stopped the UTI's. Then I took each of those 5 and only cut one out for two months until I found out what it was. I hope this helps as I feel your pain from having lots of UTI's...on a positive note, if it is something you eat or drink doing this to you here is some more good news...I have not had a UTI for 5 years now so hopefully the results will be the same for you!!!

I didn't read the answers but I did read your update and I don't think cranberry pills is going to work. There is some evidence to suggest that actual cranberry juice has enough concentrated tannins to prevent the E Coli from adhering to the urethral wall but cranberry juice cocktail only has like 25% cranberry juice in it and those pills are mostly snake oil.

There is a prescription medication that you can take every day to prevent UTIs and your doctor will have no problem prescribing it for you. Why don't you try actual medicine? I am sure it will be more helpful.

Also, you said that it's not always possible to go urinate after sex and I don't understand this excuse. As long as you are having sex inside your own home, there's no reason for you not to be able to go into your bathroom and urinate afterward.

Hello~ First, see a doctor so you can get to the bottom of why they're reoccuring. Over the counter meds help, but don't get rid of the infection.
If you're trying to get rid of it on your own this may be why. Do you use the same soap to shower? Try using Dove unsented or Summer Eve's Intimate washing. Also, laundry detergent. Be consistant. Using the restroom after intercourse is always good. Cranberry Juice and yogurt are great for women as part of your diet, not only when you have a UTI. I suffered from these before, so I feel your pain. Good Luck!
