Hi everyone - I am thinking of getting an ablation but don't know anyone whose had one. I'd be interested to hear people's experiences about the procedure as well as long-term effectiveness, side effects, and overall satisfaction with the procedure. I am aware that this procedure will cause sterility and that is not a problem. thank you in advance for sharing your experiences.

What can I do next?

I read some of the responses....all favorable. Well, I do not have anything good to say. I had one a few years back, one of the worst choices I ever made. I bleed for 2 plus years. Like I was having a heavy period, which was the reason I had the procedure in the first place. Now I have periods here and there, but all heavy. Would I ever suggest to any one, have this done.....never.

Hi,

I had mine done in October last year. The procedue was quick and simple with only slight pain after. Was completly fine the next day. I did have severe nausuea and dizzyness that lasted a whole day a few months after but I don't know if it was related. I feel fine now. Only sligtly bleeding a month after but so light only needed a pantyliner. No bleeding since. I think it was the best thing for me. I am done having children and only too happy not to have that to worry about it anymore. Good luck to you. Oh, and I would suggest you go to a doctor you know and trust.

I have a very strong opinion on this so please take this with love. Why the .... do doctors do things with such extreme. There are many things that can be done before such a procedure is done. Let's see if your doctor(s) have done any of these.

Have you had your hormones checked. Not just the one basic blood test that checks your FSH but an in-depth blood test that checks for free or unbound hormones and gives you a breakdown of all of the estrogen ones, the progesterone, the testosterone. How about a saliva test or a urine test that will check as well.

Have you tried an anti-flammatory diet, removing all foods that cause YOU inflammation? In order to do this you will need to know what those are by having an IgG blood test. The lab that we used for this, ImmunoLabs in FL, will check against up to 110 foods. Once you remove wheat, dairy, and these other foods, your inflammation will improve.

Have you had in-depth testing of your thyroid? Checking once again for more than the usual suspects. You need to know the T3 and the T4 levels. Not the basic test.

When any of your systems are out of balance, for whatever reason, you will have problems. Find out what has caused the excessive bleeding and /or endometriosis. Are you in a job or a marriage you do not like and it is causing you to be in angst /inflammed all of the time or draining the life out of you (bleeding)?

Pick up some books and read them about the female body. One that got me started in a path that was so completely different from my OB/GYN, is by Dr. Christiane Northrup called, Womens Bodies, Womens Wisdom. A must to have for everyone, no matter your age.

Birth control pills. Are you on those? They could be the problem as well and diffently are not doing a good service for your body at this time.

I will step off my soap box, for now:o) Know you are not alone, many women have been through this, many have chosen not to have something removed from their body until they tried other methods. It could be better for you in the long run if you give it a try. You can always contact me for more information.

-decided to add some more after reading the other responses. Your body was created to work a certain way. To do this to not have periods is telling your body that it is not needed anymore, in my humble opinion. I do have more to say on this as well but will not go there:o)
Another book that was not only enjoyable to read but very informative at the beginning of my research, The Sexy Years, by Suzanne Sommers. She has done a lot of research and has talked with a lot of doctors. Looks fabulous for her age. Check it out.

I had my ablastion surgery 4 months ago. I had a "burnt" smell for weeks when I urinated. Not to mention the watery discharge that eventually turned brown. Then one day out of no where I'm on a lunch "date" when I go to the restroom and find out I have a full blown period!! Soaked my shorts..VERY humiliating, I cried all the way home thinking my surgery didn't work. My recovery seemed to have taken longer than most, I thought I would always have the leaking..
Now I've noticed each period is more or a brownish discharge and with each month seems to be less and less. So I'm crossing my fingers they eventually go completely away!
When I voiced concern to my Dr. and Anethesiologist about the weight gain, both laughed and said they have never heard of such a thing and wanted me to let them know if I did months later. So far I haven't gained anything..maybe I'm a exception but they couldn't even fathom why you would gain weight...??

I had one in 2006 as a joint procedure with a gallbladder removal...I figured, hey, remove it all, right??!! I would highly recommend it. I haven't had period since. I might get an occasional brown discharge around that time of the month, but it's hardly noticable. No more cramps, no bleeding, no PMS....it's wonderful. My doctor did say it would make me sterile...NOT A PROBLEM, and that it may not last forever. DO IT...you'll be glad you did!!

I have a friend that had it done last year and she tells me its the best thing she has ever done. No problems and she hasn't had any bleeding. I am about to have a baby but i have already talked with my ob gyn about it and he said at 8 months post-partum would be a good time and i trust my doctor completely! I say do what you want and do your research on a good trusted doctor.

Hi B.,
I havent had one, but my sister did and she said it was the best thing she ever did. We have a lot of the same symptoms, so I have been considering it, sterility for me is one of the perks since I already have 3 boys and no plans on having anymore. As long as your are being treated by an experienced doctor in this area, I think its a very viable alternative to a hysterctomy.

Good luck,
D.

Hi B.,

I had an ablation about a year and a half ago and I have no complaints except for some weight gain. I've had no other side effects and have not had a period since having it done. The procedure itself is fairly simple. I didn't have any pain or anything. There is some discharge for a few weeks afterwards (sorry, kinda gross) but other than that, not much to report. Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions. Good luck, N.
