Hi
I have a almost 2 year old. I brought a seat cover that goes over the big potty and he doesn't seem to want anything to do with it. I tried putting him on it and he totally freaks out and cries. I'm begining to think I bought the wrong thing.....should I have brought a potty that suits him first or should I keep trying to get him use to using the big potty with the seat cover thing??? I'm new to the situation because he is my first pride and joy. I could use any advice....it would help me out and I think it would him my little guy out too.

Thank you
M.

Any potty you buy may scare him at first, just take it slow and easy. I bought each of my kids a potty chair and we started out going "potty" together, even before they knew how to actually perform in the pot. I would sit on my big potty and they would sit on their little potty, I think it helped a lot because they could see and hear what I was doing. When I first started, we only did this first thing in the morning, as soon as we woke up. Pretty soon they were joining me every time I went. As a matter of fact, they are 9 and 13 now and still follow me into the bathroom LOL.

It's all up to your son and you when you want to start potty training. But, if he is not ready, he won't do it. I have tried potty training for my daughter three times before it succeeded. She is 3 1/2 and she started using potty a month ago. I was kind of worried because she is after three already. But, she was just not ready last three failed training. When I tried for the fourth time, she just got it in three days. I could not believe it. If your son is ready, he will do it. That's how I think. Of course, it's worth to try because you'll never know. What I'm trying to say is don't push your son and don't rush. Kids feel it when you are frustrated and worried. Good luck.

Well children tend to be afraid of the big potty, I know my son was. Also if he is there too long his legs will go to sleep because of the loss of circulation. I would try a smaller kids training potty.

Hi M.,
First of all, did you try using a small potty too or just went right into the small seat that fits onto the big potty? If you just went straight to the big potty and your child is freaking out, it may be a little too much for him right now since he's just beginning. I would definately invest in a small potty for him until he gets used to using that or at least starts to get the hang of things and then you can switch him back over to the big potty or use both. All kids are different and some catch on quicker than others and some prefer certain methods over others. My daughter is nearly 3 years old and I introduced her to the little potty at 15 months, but she didn't actually use it until 18 months. Somewhere just before her second birthday I bought the small seat that goes on the big potty and then she was completely trained a few months after her 2nd birthday. Good luck, hang in there, and keep trying different things. Soon enough your little boy will be a big boy.

I would try a small potty. My dd was afraid of the big potty because it flushed. I think she thought she would fall in and get sucked down or something. One thing I always did though was to make sure there was some water in the bottom of the little potty. Makes cleaning it a lot easier.

You definately should get him a toilet that sits next to your toilet because he is too little to sit on the ones that go on the big toilet. They still feel like they are going to fall. My daughter is about to be 3 and still uses her own toilet because she is just too small to get on the big toilet. Every now and then she will have to use public restrooms and she does fine, but I'm always right there with her and she is just too tiny to fit on one. Good luck!

When my oldest got potty trained I bought her a small potty at the store. ........... She wasn't happy! So my mom bought her that seat thingy for the big potty and she was doing great in no time. Now that I'm trying to potty train my "too old for diapers" 3 yr old :) I took out her sisters old seat and ....... she didn't want it! So I took out her sisters old potty and ........ she didn't like that! So I was thinking 'what is wrong w/ this kid'. One day at Wal-Mart she saw a potty and said "Jennie's potty". So I bought it! We r well in our way to having a diaper free home!!! Yeay!
Maybe u should take him shopping w/ u and ask him what he likes. Get excited w/ him! They love that! ;-) Good Luck!

Hi- I think maybe to start him out on a little one. I did that with my son and he did really well and he just moved to the big one when he was ready. it was just a natural progression and he liked the little potty because it was just for him. Good luck- L.

M.,
I too am raising my first pride and joy. I am single, he is adopted. He was premature and is slightly delayed and is now 2 and a half. I say that only to add that he sees several therapists for development. They and I would say that if he is not even 2, you may be trying a little too early. Even if he is "normal", 2 for a boy is quite early in most cases. With that said, if you are set on starting now, I would go ahead and try the smaller potty as it will not be as intimidating as that huge monster you go potty on:). Well, that is my advice for what it is worth?:)
Good luck,
M.

I hate to be a downer, but I think you are about a year too early...my son didn't use either potty til just before 3 years. that was when he was ready and asking to do it. Boys are a bit later than girls typically. If you keep pushing now, be patient and make it fun. If he's not interested, don't force it:)
