Urine Smell Out of Stuffed Animal?

My daughter is finally out of diapers at night, but still has the occasional accident. Her "best friend" and lovie "Bunny" got wet one night, and now smells quite strongly of urine. I've tried surface washing him with detergent, I've tried spraying him with (natural and child friendly) pet odor remover. It's better, but now he smells like an unpleasant combination of cleaner and pee. Any ideas? He's never been machine washed or dried, and I'd really like to avoid trying that because if he fell apart I'd be sunk! Thanks for your help.

So What Happened?

Thanks all. We washed him on the gentle cycle in a lingerie bag and tossed him in the dryer for a few minutes. Good as new-ish. Thanks so much!

Well, I know you're nervous about machine washing bunny, what about hand washing in the sink? I have washed my son's puppy repeatedly in the machine and it's fine. I dry it too! But if bunny is showing signs of wear, try soaking it and letting it dry in the sun. Good luck!

Hi, we wash the stuffed animals in machine from time to time, we put them in the big laundry bag & also dry them in dryer w/ the bag too. Don't know if that will work for you.

Hi J.,

I have been there many times myself. I luckly have had very good luck when throwing stuffed animals in the washing machine. I use the gentle cycle or the soak cycle. then I either leave it outside to bake in the sun or I put it in the dryer on the cool setting. I hope this helps, good luck.

Hi J.
I hate to say it, but I really doubt anything is going to work except a trip through the washing mashine. I have washed all stuffed animals, sneakers, baseball hats...you name it. I think you will be surprised how nice it will come out. Just put it in the sun to dry. I have also gone as far as washing really "special" stuffed animals in the bath tub by hand. For some reason nothing works as well as the washer.

Hi! I have put stuffed animals through the washing machine and include regular detergent and oxyclean. To protect the stuffed animal you could put it in a pillow case or lingerie bag. If that doesn't get the smell out wash again, but this time add some white vinegar to the wash. Then hang dry somewhere where your daughter doesn't see Bunny to make sure it's completely dry. I've washed my daughters' (4 yrs & 3yrs old) lovies MANY times and they are still ok.
Good luck!

Most of the stuffed animals are quite durable when put into a washing machine. You could use gentle cycle .
Try pouring vinegar into the wash water and drying the bunny in the sun.

I completely machine wash my children's lovey stuffed animals on a regular basis. DO NOT put them in the dryer!! Use a cold water cycle, on gentle if you prefer- but I always just use the normal cycle.
When my 4 y/o had an accident in bed and her turtle got wet, I saturated him with that "Kids and Pets" enzymatic product from Walmart, let him soak for about 15 mins and then tossed him in the washer with the wet sheets. When I took him out I set him in a sunny window to dry, and he was ready to go by that night. No problems!
Stuffed animals can be washed in the washer- just not the dryer.

I've never had to try this myself on clothing or stuffed animals, but vinegar is supposed to neutralize urine. I have used a vinegar/water spray in our animal cages and it works. I'd try washing with a 25/50 vinegar/water mix and see how it might helps. The vinegar stinks at first, but then that smell goes away. Actually, I'd probably toss it in a pillowcase and throw a cup of vinegar in the washing machine along with the detergent, and wash it that way.

I agree with using the pillow case and tossing it in the wash. It works great and the stuffed animal will be just fine. Good luck

Hi J., I can guarantee that Shaklee's non-toxic laundry detergent will get rid of the urine and other odors safely. If you are reluctant to put the bunny in the washing machine (I have washed many stuffed animals in the washer & put them in the dryer with no problems), use Shaklee's detergent in water in your laundry sink - let it soak for about 15 minutes, scrub it a little, let the water out and rinse it well under the faucet and wring in out gently. Then throw it in the dryer with a couple of towels. It should be fine. Where do you live? I am in Georgetown and will be happy to give you a sample to try if you are nearby and would like it. Try giving the bunny a "bath" in baking soda. Put him in a zip top bag with some baking soda. Toss it around so he gets good and covered with the stuff, and let it sit for a few hours. As long as you can seeing the importance of the bunny and then simply dust him off good when he comes out. The problem is probably deep in the fibers of the bunny though. You could also try just soaking him in water with a mild detergent (like woolite) and letting him dry.

Hope that helps.

Hello J.! I have two suggestions. I agree with the other moms that perhaps the washing machine might work just fine. Also, I THINK your child might be over the eating stage...if you're fairly certain your children won't be chewing on the bunny, I found that repeated applications (WITHOUT RINSING EVEN!!!) :D of Bissell Pet Pro (or Pro Pet? it's a pink-labeled, double-barreled aluminum can, found by the vacuums in Walmart) worked to get male cat urine out of my daughter's hiking backpack. I SWEAR by this stuff now!!! I just set the backpack outside for about 10 days in South Carolina this past winter and sprayed it once or twice a day, and let it dry, and now there is NO ODOR. I promise you, I would have thrown that thing away a long time ago if there were any trace of the smell left! But you might just stick to the washing machine first. ;)

Best of luck,
K.

You can use a great product like Sol-u-mel that is a natural deodorizer! It uses the power of tea tree oil to eliminate odors. I typically use it in the wash, but I'm sure if you just spray it on...you'll find the same fresh results!

Let me know if you would like info. on how to get it! I don't sell it, but do help people shop for safe products such as these!

Good luck!
