Urine Smell on Mattress

My oldest son has been nighttime potty trained for a few years now, but recently he's been having accidents on a somewhat regular basis. We do have a pad that we put under his mattress, but sometimes he is somewhere else on the mattress when he has his accident. We will be getting a full mattress protector very soon!

But last night, while trying to put my daughter down, I noticed a distinct urine smell coming from my son's mattress. We have used GreenWorks on it, but it doesn't seem to have done the trick. Anything else you can point me to?

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Try sprinkling baking soda all over the mattress and then letting it sit for awhile before you vacuum it up.

Vinegar/water solution has worked for me to get urine smells out of my couch & carpet. It has worked for kid & pet accidents.

sometimes you can use a carpet/upholstery cleaner-the hot water, extraction machine-you can rent one if you don't have one-then put the mattress out in the sunshine-good luck!

We use a shower curtain over the mattress under the sheet. It works awesome!...and you can get one for 2-3 bucks vs the cost of a waterproof matress pad. Something to think about. Trust me, I feel your pain with this issue. My 6 year old is still not nightime potty trained and we have to CONSTANTLY wash sheets blankets. But, the shower curtain keeps our matress good as new. I just wipe it with clorox wipes and occasionally launder it with the sheets. It works great!

First, do you have a waterproof Mattress on it? If nothing else works, because I think baking soda or even vinegar may, take it outside in the brightest/hottest part of the day and leave it in direct sunlight for a few hours. It's amazing what this can do.

We bought a new table and it has that awful gas smell from the veneers on it....I tried everything, wiping it down, leaving it in the garage, but a few hours in the sun was all it needed.

Try looking for Totally Toddler spray at Wal-mart. It could be in the baby aisle or laundry aisle. Our Wal-mart doesn't carry it anymore, but it just has 3 simple ingredients so I make my own. Fill a spray bottle with 2 parts isoporyl alcohol, 1 part water, and a dash of Dawn dishsoap. Spray and pat it up. I've used this for years and it's a great carpet stain and odor remover. Never fails to remove any odors and leaves a clean smell.

Home Depot has a spray for odors called Odo Ban. I have used it and it works great. You can get it online too.

My son used to be a wetter. His bed also had that smell. If the smell is from wetting while he slept, it should be more superficial than deep down-his clothes and sheets kind of filter it a bit. Anyway. I had my son use Woolite upholstery cleaner, it comes in a trigger bottle (love the stuff). When that dried, he cleaned the mattress with warm water and vinegar. That was it, no soap no baking soda. It totally took the smell out. I ahd his use the Woolite first to clean the padding since the dirt could still cause a smell. We only had to do it one time and we did not have to drag it outside. It did take time to dry so he used an air mattress since he did it after school. Doing it in the morning with a fan should get it dry quickly.

Not to be paranoid, but have you taken him to a doctor? A friend of mine had a similar situation where a potty trained kid all of the sudden started having accidents and that's basically how he was diagnosed with diabetes. You may want to check with your Pediatrician.

Urine Gone helped get the cat pee smell out of our carpet. It's sold at Walgreens and I think Wal-Mart.
