Hey mamas! You guys have been great in the past and I hope you can help again. My 10 year old Jazmine has been having some upper abdominal pain and I don't know what I should do.
Some history on Jaz is that yes she does have acid reflux and she has had vesicoureteral reflux that thankfully corrected itself. However, she has still had urological problems.
Now on Sept. 25 she came home with symptoms of a bladder infection. (She has had a ton of those and said that is definately what it felt like). So on Sept. 26 I took her to the doctor and her test was negative for a bladder infection. Her doctor sent her to the hospital for a culture. We had been told that it came back negative and everything looked good. At the appt. they did go ahead and give her augmentin in case they found infection in the culture. She seemed to get a little better just complain about her tummy hurting off and on but pretty consistent still. On Oct. 14 we took her to the doctor and explained all of this to the doctor again and she said that Jazmine's urine didn't come back fine. She informed us that they found Ecoli in her urine. We freaked out!!! She said that the antibiotic should have killed it and that she should be fine. At this time we explained to her that now she has complained about pain in the upper abdominal area. She checked her tummy which she did have tenderness. The doctor took Jaz off dairy saying that it was too hard for her tummy to digest. She requested to see her back in one week. We went back and I told her there is still tenderness but she isn't doubling up in pain anymore. She said that she thought she would be fine. Now here we are and Jaz is still hurting. The doctor did give a referral to a GI specialist but they can't get her in until Feb. 5. She isn't doubling up like before but she is complaining of feeling sick to her tummy and pain with tenderness.
Do I wait for the specialist? Keep taking her back to her pcp? ER? I'm not sure what I think on this. I don't think she is faking by any means I just don't know what is the best way to deal with this. I would really appreciate to hear what you moms think on this.
Thanks sooooo much in advance and I am sorry this is so long.
C.

Hello C.,

Definitely, look for someone that can see her sooner. Also, try a gluten-free and soy-free diet to see how her body responds. also get her tested for allergies. It's possible to be allergic to milk, wheat and soy all at once. is she taking any food supplements (vitamins, etc). suspect everything until you find the culprit. does she take probiotics? Good luck and God Bless! Do what's best for you and your child. ~C.~

I think you should find her another specialist.Feb is to long for your baby to be in pain.Plus you not knowing how to treat her is going to put even more stress on you.I live in Red Oak and am truly pleased with the Dr.'s that are with the Baylor team. The hospital here in Waxahachie (Baylor) has also come along way their staff is also great.

Try to find someone else who can see her. I'd keep checking until you find someone who can do something for her. There's got to be more there than what they're willing to check. Especially if her abdominal pains are still there and it's tender. Something is wrong and the longer you wait, the worse it could get. Waiting until Feb. is just too long. See if you can personally find someone else who can see her and demand a referral to that doctor as soon as you do.

There is no way I would wait. I think I'd go to the ER at Children's. Did I mention NO WAY. Never mind that she's hurting - and three months is way too freaking long to hurt... EColi is a normal resident in the intestines, but a nasty little bug anywhere else in the body. I would at a minimum demand another urine culture with sensitivity testing for anything they find.. Holy cow, Feb? That's ridiculous! I'd take her somewhere else. I know of a good GI doctor, I'm sure he sees young patients but he's not a pediatric specialist. I have had stomach probs all my life as well as bladder infections/probs. Is she taking anything for the reflux? You might try Prilosec if she's not taking anything. Are you sure her bladder reflux fixed itself? EColi is from your backside, it's very common in the bladder, I mean it's a common issue anyway. It's a long story but I have interstitial cystitis, google it, see the symptoms, see if it sounds familiar with what she's going through. The problem with stomach issues is that they could be from lots of things. It could be related to the bladder, but then maybe not. Could the antibiotics be bothering her stomach? Feel free to PM me. Hope she feels better soon! It's miserable, I've been there.

you may want to find a different gi specialist who can see her sooner or ask your doctor to call them and see if they can get her in sooner. Feb. 5 is a long way off for someone in so much pain. Something you may want to consider is having her tested for food allergies. Those can cause not only the intestinal issues but many other underlying symptoms. I hope your daughter gets better soon. This doesn't sound like any fun!
