Update on Strep Test

Hi! So posted last night about my horrible doctor and the accuracy of the quick strep tests. I had negative results. Well, I went to a walk in urgent care this morning and yep, I was right! Positive strep test. The dr. just looked at my throat and said I am 100% sure you have strep. Then the nurse knocked on the door and said it was positive. I am SO mad at my dr. from yesterday. I would call and yell at him but I can barely talk. So, now that I'm on antibiotics, how long until the pain goes away, lol? Thanks for all the support

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks. Yeah, I like the letter idea. My husband wants to call them and demand our $15 co pay back. Yes, the dr. today said to also get a new tooth brush after the 3rd day, so I will be doing that. I'm feeling pretty miserable right now. My husband is still at work and so I just ordered pizza for the kids. My son is already on antibiotics for a sinus infection, so I'm not worried about him getting it. I'm hoping my daughter and husband don't get it. Anyway, I'm off to take some motrin and drink a ton of water. Thanks

A solution of hydrogen peroxide and mouthwash will works wonders-I know it is only a topical remedy until the antibiotic kicks in-but you will be amazed.
You can do this as often as you need to. A pain reliever will also help with the pain-take care!

Thank you so much for updating us! I was one of the folks who responded to your post yesterday. I am so glad to hear that you got a diagnosis and are getting antibiotics so this will not worsen.

I'd just wait until I was better before contacting your lousy doctor. And I'd write him a letter, rather than phoning. A phone call is forgotten as soon as they hang up but something on paper tends to scare people a little more because it's more formal! I'd give the date and time of your appointment, describe how he did not even offer to do a cultured strep test and how he dismissed your concerns and pain, and say that you are going to transfer to another doctor because of his poor treatment of you.

Feel better soon.

I think strep usually responds pretty well to antibiotics so you should notice improvement by tomorrow. Hope you feel better and the rest of your family stays healthy!

A few days but as sick as it sounds like you've been don't be surprised if it doesn't take a week or so to feel 100% I had it last year for the first time ever in my life and I felt horrible and it took a couple of weeks before I had all stamina back.

Also I would definitely call your other doc, ask to speak to the nurse or return your call and then tell them what happened and how rude the doc was to you and that you will no longer be coming there as a patient. Some docs, alot of docs, think they do no wrong and when they do they need a little "humble pie."

Ugh! The worst!!

Mine was better in 24 hours, close to normal in 48, and gone within 4 days. Still take ALL of the meds though!! Feel better mama!

My doc also told me as long as I didn't share cups or anything with anyone, it wouldn't pass. Since my 4 year old likes to share my plate, it was an adjustment - but we did great and no one else got it!

i knew it. i get so mad about those 5 min tests. they are worthless. yes write a letter to the doctor's office, because not only did it cost you for a wrong diagnosis, but also gave you days worth of misery.

Funny thing is that it sounds lihe the doc at urgent care is the 'old-fashioned' kind to have just looked at your throat ... cause, my dear, he was not just looking at the throat, he was also getting a good whiff of your breath! And strep breath is ICKY! I don't need the test to tell me when little one here has it - that breath smell is it (and seems to come early on).

The reason they do the stupid test is cause the stupid insurance won't pay w/o it -- that's from my fav old pedi many years ago when one of my own kids had it and he said we both know what it is, but if he didn't do that stupid test, the insurance wouldn't pay ...grrrr!! (so it just cost more $$ - insurance could've saved themselves)

My husband had it last year and started feeling better after the 2nd dose of medication. My kids' doc also says get a new toothbrush after the 3rd day.

Hope you feel better soon, and the other posters are right -- write a letter and find a new doc. Any doctor that won't listen to a patient isn't one that I'd return to.
