Good for you!!!!!
Yes, offer to pay MIL, if she refuses the money, take her to a really nice meal with you and your daughter or make a donation in her name to her favorite cause.
Make sure she gets a beautiful photo of dautgher in the gown..
Update: So I did put the stop payment on the check after I called her twice and left messages asking her to call and discuss the length of the dress, she never returned my calls AND tried to cash the check on Tuesday! I left messages both Friday and Saturday. So glad I went ahead and put the stop pay on the check! We did take photos of the pins on the dress. My daughter had her formal portrait sitting yesterday and had to wear REALLY high heel shoes to make the dress look like the right length. After about an hour in the shoes, she had to take them off (recently ankle injury from cheer). The photographer was amazed how much more relaxed she was without the stinking shoes on and got some really cute photos in a dress that was just too long. Just imagine how great this experience would have been for all of us had this woman done the job in the first place! Postive twist, my mother in law went to the photo sitting with us and offered to cut the dress...so obligatory question, do I offer to pay my MIL to trim the dress? (this is a big non question, she will never take $ from us to do something for one of her grandchildren! She is a professional level seamstress herself, I didn't ask her to do it to begin with because I would rather her just enjoy her role as a grandmother)

I think the stop pay was the right thing to do. She knew she was in the wrong, especially since she would not speak with you at all.
How nice of your MIL. I'd take her up on it and then just do something nice for her. Sounds like you have a good MIL. I never met mine.
Sooo... did she do anything about not being able to cash the check, or have you STILL not heard from her?
I'm glad your mom will be able to fix it for her... Still sucks though that you got screwed over by a person who doesn't seem to care about her clients...
If she offered, then I would not expect to pay. It sounds like she just wants to help.
Keep an eye on your credit reports! If the taylor made no attempt to contact you she might simply deal with this by reporting you for non payment. You want to file a dispute right away if she does this.
Why would you offer money knowing how your husband's mother feels? However, I think the stop payment was a bad idea too.
