Update/Never Mind - Baby and Fever

My 11 month has had a temperature of 99.9°F to 101.0°F since Monday at around 5 p.m. He has no other symptoms (no diarrhea, vomiting, etc.) We have tried the correct doses of ibuprofen and acetaminophen at the correct intervals but to no avail. The temperature won’t return to normal. He is lethargic and fussy as to be expected. He is not eating table foods but he is eating his formula bottles. He refuses all other liquids. He is very hot to the touch and the only comfort he finds is with cool baths and cool, wrung out wash cloths. I called the pediatrician yesterday but the head nurse was dismissive. I would like to know how long we should continue this course without taking him to the doctor. Should we just take him to the doctor as a precaution? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have made the appoinment. Thanks, Elaine, for answering. Those were our sentiments exactly.

You all had good points which I greatly appreciate. It turns out he had roseola which was no fun over the holidays. I did complain about the nurse because I feel like I've battled her all along. I know I'm a first time mom but I try to be honest and reasonable without freaking out. The doctor is so open to any goofy question while his head nurse is an utter dragon.

You may also want to mention to the doctor that you didn't appreciate the dismissive attitude form the nurse when you called. Remember always trust your instinct. If you feel something is wrong, then get it checked out. If the doctor looks him over and find nothing, then see if they can take some blood and do a CBC. This is a simple test that they should be able to do in the office and get the results fairly quickly. This is what my peds office would do for an unexplained fever that is lasting to long. Even though it's a low grade fever, if it's not going away then something may be wrong.

Hopefully it's nothing, possibly teething or a virus, but it could be a sign of something serious. You can never be too careful! Make sure to keep an eye on how many wet and poopy diapers he has. If you see a decrease in that there may be dehydration, but as long as he has plenty of diaper changes he should be OK. Hope he feels better soon!

Has he had Roseola yet? It is a virus that begins with a fever, no other symptoms. Generally the fever is the only symptom and it tends to get very high. My ped always told me that a baby can tolerate fevers much better than adults and to call if there is a fever after 3-5 days.

Our peds. guide is day a fever for at least 24 hours before they will recommend an appt.

have them check for strep
could be teething
could be an ear infection
could be a reaction to a new food/seasonal allergy.

Yes, call and insist they see him. You don't want this to spike out of control over Thanksgiving.
