I use Sally Hansen's hair cream remover (in a blue bottle)comes with a vitamin E lotion for after use. I get it at Walmart
Hello all, please tell me I am not alone. I have had my upper lip waxed a couple of times and every time I break out in little bumps. I thought it would stop happening I go to Nordstrom spa and they use anastasia waxing it is the best. My eyebrows are not even red when I leave. My eyebrows are perfect. Is there a different way to handle unwanted hair. I am scared to put mystery creams on my face. Any one have something they use and love? Thx

Hi C.,
I also have unwanted hair. I am 30 yrs old and have had this problem for the last 6 years. I use Nair hair removal for my upper lip. You can get this in the sensetive skin formula. I also have to use the sensetive skin formulation. Try this out. You can get this at Fred Meyer, Walgreens, etc. and it only costs $5 or so. I hope you find that this will work for you too.

With waxing I break out too. See if there is a place near you that offers threading (you can search for "threading" on the internet to find out more detailed information). It's not as common as waxing, but it much less irritating. Good luck!
Try laser hair removal. I have medium brown hair ....and got great results. I think Medspa is having a 50% off sale right now. check it out.
Hi C.,
My Mother is an RN and a certified sking therapist and electrolosist (sp?). She has told me (and this has proven true for me) that if you WAX or PLUCK unwanted hair, it grows in darker, thicker, tougher (and sometimes, i.e. above your eyebrows, curlier). She told me that for hair that is fine, and blonde (i.e. peach fuzz), to shave it, or commit to permanent removal (lazer, or electrolosis). I've done this for years, and it works. I do wax my eyebrows, and they are always red afterwards for the day. I think this happens to nearly everyone. If these are not viable options, I agree -those creams give me a rash, too. Good luck.

okey doke C.,
i am a very experienced esthetician, and sometimes lip bumps happen with the first wax. Generally they don't after the second.
did you tell the therapist after the first experience so she could lay off any 'after' products that might irritate the skin the second time? i would have them used a plain cold compress to soothe (and leave it on for awhile), and no skin relief products. then you should avoid makeup on that area for the rest of the day, in fact if you can avoid even cleansing for that day to let the skin be untouched for a period.
it could be the wax itself, the 'after' product used to calm the skin or... unfortunately just what that area of skin thinks of being waxed. (maybe it's the style of waxing)
i would switch spas and try it again, & absolutely notify the new therapist first. Get a referral for a place where you personally know clients that have great waxing experiences there!!
i can recommend a fab place in the portland area (don't know where you are).
good luck!
I would recommend laser for hair reduction/removal. I just completed underarms and bikini and am elated at the result. I know the aesthetician I go to also does facial hair, so it may be worth a consultation. Her name is Diane at Dent Spa in Forest Heights. She uses top of the line equipment and is a highly skilled professional.
Hi C.,
I totally agree, although I get the little white bumps on my eyebrows and my lip...so...with that, I started using White Tea Calming Serum...I am a Sensaria Independent Rep, but I reccommend it not only because I sell it, but because I use it and I truly do love it. I understand not wanting to try a mistery cream. Here is a little information about the product I use.
White Tea Calming Serum is Antioxidant rich. The White Tea is blended with calming Sea Whip and Allantoin to relieve signs of irritation and sensitivity. It is also Fragrance free, alcohol free and free of synthetic color.
It is used to sooth irritated skin and is recommended to be used after tweezing or waxing. :o)
I hope this helps...please contact me if you would like more information.
Yup me too, I have found that I get one chance to get the hair, and I cant do the same spot more than once in one sitting ( I just pluck if I miss some) . I have very sensitive skin so the temp has to be just right, not too hot. also I dont put any lotion or anything on afterward, all these seem to help. Good luck!!
Hi C. - I would go to an aesthetic medicine center - in pdx the vanderveer center is excellent.
You may be a good candidate for electrolyis. One of my girlfriends had her upper lip done - and was really pleased w/the results ie permanent hair removal. Just make sure you go to a medically based ctr as a lot of so called "spa" etc offer electrolysis but their techs are not necessarily properly trained. Good luck and have a good day! M.
I've tried everything for my unwanted hair (I'm half Middle-Eastern, so I have a lot!). I've had electrolysis on my upper lip, which was expensive, painful, took too long (did it regularly for over a year), and didn't work. Now I just wax.
I've had laser hair removal on my bikini line and underarms, with great results. It's spendy, but totally worth it to be hair free for life. It's also pretty painful, but the treatments only last a few minutes, so you can grit your teeth and get through it. I've had 5 or 6 treatments on both areas, and I still have some hair, but it's been reduced by about 75%, which is fine by me.
One of the other posters recommended electrolysis, but this treatment has pretty much been replaced by laser hair removal. It's antiquated and less effective than lasers.
Hi~
I don't know first hand, however my mom gets Vaniqua from her dermatologist(by prescription),and it seems to work great for her:)
Hope this helps:)

Hi C.,
I am an esthetican and I get those bumps from waxing too. I use ice on my lip after waxing, and sometimes I use green tea as well. It is acidic and caffienated but it works for me. Sometimes it works 100% and at other times I still get the little breakouts. #1, after waxing, do not touch the area, try to keep it clean for the rest of the day. The pores are opened up and susceptible to dirt etc.... Why do some areas break out more than others?, a combination of things, but areas with more oil glands present will be more susceptible. I haven't used anastasia, I will have to look into it. I love hard wax for eyebrows myself. I am so glad you love your eyebrows. Relationships with brows are so interesting. I have just learned to sugar and am enjoying that tremendously. My skin reacts to wax and the sugaring is like an exfoliation and conditioner. I am happy. My lip is happier, but I still do get a few blemishes from time to time. Oh and direct high frequency treatments can help treat the area post waxing, just make sure you take in some antioxidants
Good luck with it all. The good news is the more you remove the hair, the less it will grow back. With sugaring, my lip hair has diminished significantly in a short time.
I use a depilatory creme on my upper lip. That way there is no trauma to my sensitive skin. You put it on for 5 minutes and wipe it off, and the hair comes with it.
I know this may sound old fashioned, and probaly is with all the new things they have out. But I remember my great-great-aunt using tweezers, and she never had hair bumps. We women in our family have facial hair on our chins, so whenever comes on me, I get out the tweezers, and no bumps nothing, I just stay on it, I feel my chin every day. And if I just feel the first sign coming on, I get out the tweezers. It has worked for me.

Surgi cream by Ardell for the face (they make a different formula for other areas)works really well. Keeps regrowth to a minimum as well. I purchase it at the beauty supply store.
C.,
The red bumps are normal when you have waxing done. The skin area is sensitive and you are putting Hot Wax on your skin which opens up the pores, then removing the hair.
I am also an esthetician and cosmetologist. There are a few reasons I think that this could be a problem. First is even though the Wax is hot there is a possibility that the Wax is contaminated. The other thing is the product put on after the wax treatment might be irritating your skin because the pores are still wide open. I would suggest that you ask for a cold wet cloth to be put on your lip after the waxing and not have the after wax lotion/oil applied. Be firm, you are the customer. Don't let them try to convince you that the after wax product doesn't irritate or closes the pores. Yes, it may close the pores, but your body may be reacting to it. Cold will close the pores and eliminate the irritation.
Good luck,
A.
Lasic Hair Removal- spend the money once and get it done with. I went to American Laser Centers. I never experienced the red upper lip after each treatment. They have a 2 yr gaurantee after you complete your treatments (you can continue to go in regularly for that time frame). 80+% success rate. I would forget the painful, rashy waxing experience.
Unwanted hair can be permanently removed by electrolysis by a professional. For upper lip hair it may take up to 1.5 years as your hair has different stages of growth and it must be treated in small time and area amounts each treatment. Some hairs grow faster than others and others may take up to 6 months to cycle through their 3 stages of growth. So it is best once you start treatment to continue as soon as you have new hair so it can be treated in the first stage as it is the growing stage. Blend is a great method of electrolysis, you hold a small ground, and the electrologist inserts a small probe into the hair folicle and then applies the electrolysis and it destroys the growing center of the hair, then the hair should just lift -not be pulled- out. When hairs are tweezed out - it injuires the growing center and the body sends more nourishment there and usually (aside from eyebrows) the hairs then return thicker. After each treatment your skin maybe a little pinker/red, however there should be NO scabbing or other depigmentation if done properly. There is a mild discomfort to treatments and taking motrin prior with food(for the motrin sake) may help. I had been "blessed" with lots of hair and had electrolysis done on my upper lip successfully...then became an electrologist and am licensed in this in another state, I have not pursued a business here in this yet...so I have not checked any of Idaho's state requirements of licensure of electrologists here. Investigate and interview and be informed in your choices. Also make sure your electrologist wears gloves and uses disposable probes for health & safety reasons. I wish you success in your dealings with this. I have always been glad I had it done, and when I had a business I enjoyed seeing others have sucess as well. J.
Electrolysis or Lazer Hair removal are permenent and healthier. Not as spendy as they sound escpecially for small areas. Each takes about 5 or 6 sessions but, then you are done. I highly reccomend lazer hair removal it is less annoying than eletrolysis and less time consuming. I have had both and plan to get more lazer hair removal.
Sorry to hear about the bumpies on your lip. I am a cosmotologist of 18 years and I have seen this happen over & over to many people including myself. The bumps are actually tiny water blisters caused by shock to the delicate skin of your lip and perhaps some other factors ie; hormones, medications, u.v. exposure, or wax temp.
having sensitive skin myself, I always seem to get a few of those blisters upon my lip whenever I have it waxed. sometimes more than others. Unfortuantely, it's very common.
here are some things that can help: plan your lip wax right after your period when hormones are low, avoid scrubbing your skin a few days prior to the appointment, avoid sun exposure before and after the appointment, and finally, apply ice directly to your lip immidiately after the wax along with a 'calming' oil blend ( like, Aveda's Calming oil or, jojoba & lavender. a cooled down camomile tea bag is also effective.)
other methods of hair removal are not advised because of the strong chemicals, not to mention that it's not attractive when it grows out ( like shaving or nair). If your hair is not too coarse, you could try bleaching the fuzz with a sally hansen facial bleaching kit and tweezing the few long coarse ones individually.
Don't give up on the waxing, give these tips a try, and I also reccomend trying an Aveda Salon where they use plant based gentle wax.
Best of luck to you.
I'd recommend laser hair removal. I had it done and it was well worth it! It's spendy, but like I said, definitely worth it! You have to go in for 6 (or more) treatments to get it all and you may be a little red for a day or two after the treatment but it will be gone permenantly, no more waxing for the rest of your life! Good luck with whatever method you choose to treat it.
You are scared to use facial creams, when you would rather go to a spa and have waxing? Hmm... Anyway it sounds like your lip is getting and has been burned. STOP waxing your lip. Serious damage can be caused. I would go to the spa and ask them question about your lip. Or even go to a doctor to double check in case your lip is burned.
Hope this helps. Be careful!

My sister did the laser hair removal and LOVED the results. She did only two treatments and it's ALL GONE...doesn't come back. I guess if you figure out what you spend on waxing it each year and how many dozens of years you'll have to keep going back and add it up, the laser treatments are actually CHEAPER than waxing. It was virtually pain free and she is so happy with the results. I'm going very soon for my first treatment.
Good luck!!

I had the same problem with upper lip waxing. I found that if I iced the area immediately afterwards that the little red bumps would not surface. I have sensitive skin and can't use any of the "mystery creams" but I've tried both hot and cold waxing with the same results. Try the ice, just an ice cube directly to the area has worked wonders for me.
I use Avon's skin so soft hair removal cream for the face. I also break out in really bad white heads when I wax. It only takes about 10 minutes at home.
If you would like any, I also happen to be an Avon rep and the tube is usually about $4.99. It doesn't make me break out or have a red upper lip.

Laser hair removal is the best! It works best on the dark hairs and it is permanent!
My friend has been going to a laser hair removal center for a while and her unwanted hair is almost all permanantly gone now. She used to have almost a complete beard because of a genetic problem, but now she just gets a few stray hairs. Anyway, when I asked her how much it cost she said it ranged from between $25-$75 depending on where you went, and how large an area you were having treated. So, if you'd like a permanant solution, I'd look up the different laser treatment centers in your area.
PS Afterwards her skin was a little red for a couple of days, but her unwanted hair is 95% gone PERMANENTLY!
Just a thought! :o)
I too, have hair in unwanted places. I have more hair than my brother and try not to have a mustache like my grandmother. I've tried bleach, one of those tweezer like things that rip out the hair (don't), and wax. Wax is the best even with the little red bumps. There is a new Nair for faces you might try. Nair never works on me, I'm not patient enough!
You might want to look into laser hair removal. They generally chage by the area and it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 visits. I would only use a recomended Dr. My OBGYN did my lower leg and was great!!! Dr. Richard Kubiniec in Vancouver WA. ph: ###-###-####. Who more can you trust than someone who takes care of you when you are pregnant? Tell him C. B. refered you. My face is so sensitive that I am not able to wax anywhere on my face due to the same reaction snd I used to work in a salon so I have tried different waxes. It just seems that I can't use any of them on my face. So I would not recommend using any creams due to the same or worse reaction.
The bumps on your upper lips have nothing to do with the product. That skin is extra sensitive and each persons skin reaction to waxing is different.
You are not alone. I have my eyebrows waxed and they are great, but no matter what I try on my lip it breaks out.
I have decided that it's not worth the bother to me, since my hair is blond there anyway. Sometimes it gets a little long and noticeable and I trim it close to the skin with cosmetic scissors. How dark is your hair? Have you tried bleaching it?
Professional bleaching might be a good option.
Then there's always electrolosis...
C., if you are getting white bumps that means the wax is getting into your pores. So the best thing I have ever found is to have the wax person put baby oil on right after. This pulls the was out and prevents any more from sinking in. The skin over the lip is much more sensitive than the skin in the eyebrow area, so that is why you are seeing a break out. I would stay away from most of the creams unless something comes highly recommended. Also, maybe try going to a good medispa where they may be more trained in the different affects. I know a great one in Kirkland, Derma Vita. Good luck!
Hi there,
There is a products called Finally Free that I have heard about. I am going to try it...but haven't yet. If you try it let me know how it worked! J.
Sally Hansen has a cream that I just love! Good luck, and would love to hear what others have to say too.
I am like you I do have a problem and I have found that the best thing I have used for unwanted hair has been this stuff from Avon. It is easy to use and it is shaped to your lip. I dont know the name of it but if you know a Avon Rep. they will beable to tell you. It is not a wax it is more like Nair you just leave it on for 8 minutes and wipe off. It is Great and stays looking great for a long time.
C.
Your not alone, I have the same problem. I have a rash with redness and bumps every time. Tried all hair removals and have found nothing that works. My eyebrows also flair up.
C. J
I asked my hairdresser about this because it only happened occassionally when I had it done. (She wasn't the one doing it but I happened to be seeing her once just after it happened). She said it happened when the wax was too hot. I stopped going to the person that it happened at and I've not had any further problems.

I'm of Italian ancesty and are known to have hair on our lip as we grow older. I know that it is a pain but I tweeze off the darkest/coarse ones. the fine hairs are great for definition and shadowing of your face. It's easier to pluck in a good light and mirror. It takes just a few seconds in the morning to pluck any new hairs.
