I am just wondering how many people out there was cursed with unusual names?

My first name was Josephine Helen, had two middle names too. Clever right? I don't think a day went by in kindergarten that I wasn't picked on unmercifully for it.

I hate my name with a passion that burns! So I chopped everything off and went with J.. Sadly I still have to explain to people I am a girl so no e at the end. :p

Point of information, I am 44, when I was a kid this was unusual. I am well aware in the pool of names that are out there now it wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

Oh, guys they started me out with J. Helen if that helps.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Oh yeah thanks for reminding me I never had the license plate for my bike like all my friends did. :( :p

SH I still go by Josephine but legally J. because my mom doesn't know how to fill out a birth certificate so that is what it legally is. Oh yeah, every member of my family including my husband makes fun of how many aliases I have. :( You should see my credit report, pathetic!

Oh never explained the crazy use of names, we are Sicilian. I was to be the last and there was a lot of family to be respected. :(

I don't understand the double name craze- like Phil Phillips on American Idol. Maybe someone can explain it to me?

A family in my neighborhood named their daughter Jordan. Their last last name is also Jordan. My husband went to school with a guy named Clem Clemenson, and another named Harry Balzac. No kidding.

I know a girl, who is in her 20's and her name is "Edna."
Usually, people who hear her name, then expect her to be a super old crabby ol' woman. And are sort of shocked, to see that she is a young woman. Who does not at all match her name.

I think Josephine is more elegant. ;)

I have a super common name, Jennifer. So common in fact that a lot of the Jennifers I meet also have the same middle name, L., AND all those little specialized license plates were always sold out of my name!
My last name is super unusual, and causes a conversation everytime someone new hears it. I actually don't mind explaining it, it's misspelled and mispronounced 99% of the time. When it's mispronounced part of it sounds like the F word, which was always good for a laugh when people realize what just came out of their mouth, lol. My last name is what has made me stand out from all the other Jennifers, and has always been a great conversation starter.
My daughter's first name is Roxy-J.. She has 6 total. Almost everyone who heard the name, while I was pregnant, had something negative to say.
They can all kick rocks, cause I didn't and still don't care. =)

First, I like the name Josephine :)

I can't complain very much about my name. I'm a Jessica but have always gone by J.. The only issue I have is the "ie" at the end. Some close family friends call me Jessica and Jess, which is totally fine. I like that my name can be reduced to a couple nicknames easily. My husband and I wanted uncommon names for our kids but nothing too unusual. Our son is Weston and if baby #2 is a girl, we're strongly favoring Fiona. Most people can pronounce them if just reading them, most people can spell them if just hearing them and they both have built in nicknames...Wes and Fi.

I was named after my grandma. I got her first, middle, & maiden name for a second middle name. I always thought it was weird.

My sister was named after our great grandma. She definitely got the weird first name (Hyla). She was teased a lot as a kid because of it.

I named my daughter Paige. I wanted an uncommon, yet normal name for her.

We had a cat named Josephine - so named because she was a calico (you know, Joseph's coat of many colors?). So I've always liked it, but I could see how J. Helen could get you picked on in school. You could have been a Duggar! hahahaa... kidding! ;)

No, I had a completely annoying first name too. I hated it and changed it to Catherine (my middle name) in high school. I dropped my first name legally when I got married. (And no, I will not say what my annoying first name was - that's how annoying it was!)

When I named my kids, I tried to give them normal names. My older daughter is Corinne (I know, not an everyday name, but also not weird, I don't think). You'd be surprised how many people see her name and say "Core - EEN!" Ugh! (It's pronounced Core-inn) So that may have been a baby name fail, but my daughter seems to love her name, so that's good. I named my younger daughter Isabelle, which is easy to spell and pronounce, but then that same year every other person named their daughter Isabella, so she is forever being called Isabella. I swear, you just can't win!

I know a little girl named Josephine. Her nickname is J. or JoJo, & we all LOVE it! She has 2 middle names....which are not coming to mind - I just remember that they are "older names". All of her names are in honor of her Grandmas. :)

My name is Suzanne Yvonne....LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. Always have, hope I always will. Nicknames range from S., Suzy, Suz, SuzyQ, & my Grandpa used to always sing....."If you knew Suzy, like I know Suzy - oh, oh, oh - what a gal!" I think it's cute that I remember him singing "gal" instead of "girl"...all of these years later.

My name's not unusual, just old fashioned (T.) and Zita is an old random nickname derived from T. (Theresa) which is how I came up with my online name!
The kids I REALLY feel sorry for are the one's whose parents must go out of their way to make sure their child's name is "special" and "unique" like Stephanie spelled Stefaunee, or naming your son Nascar.
Ugh. Don't do it, I promise your children will resent you for it :(

I like Josephine:)

I don't like made-up names or traditional names that are misspelled. I think it disrespects the child, honestly. Just my opinion!

I have a biblical name, as does my brother.

For my four girls I picked pretty, not too common (but not uncommon) names that have been around for a long time and names that are respectful, not silly or weird.

Yep... .unusual name here! My name is Malia..... (I'm 54....)

The combination of a Polynesian/Hawaiian first name with a German Last name gave the teachers FITS every year! Then... in Jr. High, when a teacher mispronounced it, (It is pronounced like Maria, but with an L instead of an R), when she corrected herself, one bully, said, "No, it's Malaria!" Gee... what a fun nickname for someone that is already picked on.

I had quite a temper when I was young.... (Irish-German redhead, with the temper to go with the hair)... but I thought it was cool that my name was the Polynesian version of "Mary" ..... but when I would tell kids at school, it soon became "Mary, Mary, quite contrary..." and that sent me into a bit of a temper tantrum.

Needless to say, I gave my kids more "common" names... And yes, I never could find the cool things with my name on them! (Except one time... my parents went to Hawaii on a trip, and found a plate that had both Malia and Mary on it.)

I did grow up to appreciate the name, though... and in college, it became fun to see if the teachers would come up with a different way to mangle my name!

My name is not all that unusual, so I don't consider myself "cursed with an unusual name" but it's not "common" either.

The timing of this question makes me wonder of the intent is to call attention to recent "name question/s" and although I am not a big fan of extremely odd/unique or contrived names...in reality, it doesn't matter much to me what others choose to name their children--be it blessing or curse...that's for them to decide.

I think we've all seen tiny little "Ivans" grow into their names eventually, right?

I do think, when naming a child, parents need to look objectively at the names they are considering.

I love Josephine, and Josie! Helen is my sisters name and she never much liked it either. My name is T., which most think is pretty. I just think it sounded made up when I was a child and now sounds like I think I'm a princess. Which of course I am ;) but I still wish it was something you'd heard at least once before, like Tara maybe. Not a jennifer or something super common but not something you don't hear much or people can't pronounce or spell! And I really really dislike people misspelling traditional names on purpose, it really does make it look like you're dumb or can't spell , sorry!

My name is fairly common, there were always a couple others in the school. Didn't bother me much, I had plenty of options for personalized knick knacks! I ran into an old friend a couple weeks ago, she was very pregnant and told me her husband had picked their baby girl's name. She is going to be named Avian. I had to bite my tongue from saying "like bird?". Poor kid, let's hope there's not another round of avian flu when she hits school age or she'll never hear the end of it! This made me wonder, if you know someone naming their kid something that is an actual word with a less than desirable meaning, should you tell them??

i don't mind some unusual names. growing up with 'suzy hill' i so wanted to be aurora. :D i hated suzanne and all its variants, so now i like it. sue is kinda boring, though.
my boys have normal, easy to spell names, but i love the meanings behind them. what bugs me is when someone takes a normal name and spells it 'creatively', or just totally makes s**t up. i have a young friend who has saddled her son with 'alexz'. and i once met a 'latrina'. swear to gods.
why? WHY?

I never had you for any other then a J......no E:)

I always hated my name.....I went by Libby short of E. since the time I was born.....It is hard for a kid my age to explain why I have two names. My legal name is E.......No one has ever called me that unless I was in trouble....or had to do something grown up and official.

I love my name now that I am grown up and understand unique is awesome.

Pretty sure I will hear it sooner or later for my youngest two's names...I have a Gieger(said guy-ger)and a Zephyr(said zefer).......They both seem to fit up to the uniqueness of their names:) Even at a young age.

Actually my husband named him after his favorite artist.....We just spelled it differently. Wow. Did not mean to offend you by naming my child that. It actually fits him just right. He is a talented, mystified kid who loves superheroes and boy stuff...as he should.

Never had someone sound so offended by his name....Holy wow batman.

All throughout school I never met another D. - after high school and in my mid 20's I worked with a guy with my same name and then another few years I have met another one. I dont hate my name but dislike my middle name. So when it came to naming my daughter I wanted hers to be a somewhat common name - that way it was easier for my parents to get her treasures since they are on the road traveling. I really wanted to name her after my grandmother so she does have 2 middle names one being after my grandmother, and great grandmother and probably a few more down the line - so one of her middle names is Beata (Bee-ah-ta). Which made my dad proud to have that name in there.

I'm a 30ish Martha. Go by M., and if you ask my sister what my name is I am either Smurfy Murphy or Chicken Poop (no kidding and a long story)Yeah yuck hated it. Swear to god my mother gave my sisters the go-ahead to name me. They had names picked out if I was a girl or a boy. I thank my stars I was a girl cause they were in Sunday school when the great epiphany happened and so it was Martha for a girl, and Lazurus for a boy. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Lazy Lazi, or Lezi or Lezbo. I would have died if I was a boy. Think I would have had to go with Russ. Wont go near the names of my husband and his family, they are Indian and a hoot to pronounce. I think the worst in my family is a cousin named Braunwyn. That poor kid.
J. were you born in the south. My dad is a born and bred Texan and all his 4 other siblings have 2 first names. Gary Don, Eddie Ray, Cindy Lou and all that jazz.

My kids are not too out there, I named them all Indian (Sanskrit or Hindi) names to reflect their dads heritage, but easy for Americans to pronounce. Wouldnt you know it NO ONE DOES. Mira (said Mir-ra) - after Princess Meera who played and sang beautiful music (lots of people call her MY-Ra that bugs me terrible). Diya (said DEE-YAH) - Lamp or Light (dont know why but everyone in the medical profession seems to call her DYE-AH). Rohan said as spelled- to climb and Ascend. (most people say Row-An with the emphasis like that) OH Well keep people guessing. I love it when people look at my husbands name, and they get all ready to say it, and then their tongue just goes haywire, and they have to double check the paper like a hundred times. They just give up and ask him what it is.

My parents gave me a very unusual name - or I should say unusual here, common in Sweden. I won't even mention my name because if someone I know should happen to stumble on this site they would know it was me right away, it's that unusual. Some variations on it have become more common in the last 15 years, so now at least people pronounce it correctly. When I grew up, everyone always got it wrong. I remember once or twice being teased for my name by older kids, but kids can always find a way to tease someone based on their name. No one in my class ever made a big deal about it.

I have actually always liked having an unusual name. It sure has always made me stand out. I gave my son an uncommon name as well, an old family name, but he can always shorten it to a common name or use his middle name if he really doesn't care for it when he's older. However, for now he adamantly sticks by his given name.

I guess from experience I know that J. is feminine and Joe is masculine.
Unfortunately many people do not know this.
I've gone through the T. with an I vs Terry with a y syndrome my entire life... since the rule is that a female T. should have end in i, but many female T.'s are spelled with a y... probably because their parents didnt know the rule.
