OK, so I am freeking out a little. I will give the long of it.
My 10 month old was nursed for 8 months. At 5 months or so he was introduced to milk based formula with no bad reaction. Somewhere along the line I started him on cheese and yogurt as well.
Around 6 months I gave him egg and he had diarea. I know, I shouldn't have done that. A month or so later I gave him a waffle that had egg and milk in it. He was pukey all day (he was a very very spitty baby to begin with so a bit hard to tell). I have assumed an egg issue. A month or so ago I accidentaly gave him a morningstar farms burger that has egg and milk and soy and wheat. He got red around the mouth. I figured that verified the egg issue.
Yesterday morning he started Amoxasillin for the second time. Last time he got a bit of diarea.
Tonight I fed him roast beef, broccoli, sweet potato and a cup of whole milk. He has had all those things before. Beef he loves, broccoli he is never a fan of and has had very little, sweet potatoes are a staple of life, and milk he has drank from his brothers cup many time (2%) but I suppose never sprayed it around so much as tonight.
By the end of dinner his face was blotchy read with white centers. He is fussy as all get out and has now had his second diaria diaper.
Obvious it was something he ate with the red and white rash. Diarea not totally different from last time he was on amoxasillin. But the red rash at dinner?
So, is it possible to be allergic to broccoli? I thought it was a low allergen. Like I said, he has had it on his plate but spit more out than ate.
Is it possible to be allergic to whole milk but not milk formula, yogut, cheese, milk based sauces and maybe even 2% milk?
It sounds to me that, at least this time, it was a reaction to the amoxicillan. My first son was on amoxicillan many times without issues and it would clear his ear infections. But, after being on it so many times, his body began to reject it and he got a red rash all over his body - I believe he had diarrhea as well. He now has to take different antibiotics. He probably has some food allergies as well, but the rash and diarhea definitely sound like the antibiotic.

Why was your Dr so quick to give your son amoxicillin 2x? I would avoid medicine like that all together unless absolutly necessary. Just my opinion. Diarrhea can be caused from the medicine, teething, milk or eggs (maybe) I would be careful with anything with wheat also, my son is only 6 months and he has blotchy red on his checks also. I blamed it on the food allergy oats but his Dr says its an eczema skin condition, its come and gone a few times with lots of special lotions. Good Luck.

i have been a nurse for many years, and just because he did not have a reaction to the milk the first few times does not mean that you can rule it out now. you need to take him to the dr and have them do an allergy test on him. because the next time there might not be just hives but his throat may swell up. many times beofre people have a reaction to something they have to come in contact with it a few times before there is a reaction. more than likely it is the egg or the milk. i have never met someone that has an allergy to broccoli, but im sure that it is possible, but take him to the dr!!!!

S.,
I strongly suggest taking your infant to a pediatric allergist. I have a 6 month old that we just went through this process with and it is VERY important not to mess with this. Do you live in the cleveland area? I can get you a few numbers if you need them. She had a scratch test done and we determined that she is allergic to quite a bit and the fact that your child is now experiencing hives is a pretty impressive reaction that is considered to be linked to anaphylaxis reactions down the road. My Ava also had hives and they were worried that she may have been having a hard time breathing as well. The scrath test was VERY easy. Very little if any pain. And that way you can eliminate what you know he is allergic to, and go from there. It is possilbe to develop an allergy to milk the more the child is exposed to it. And it cna be dangerous. Let me know how it works out, because I had to resume breastfeeding adn change my diet quite a bit. This is all just happened to me in the last week, but I can help you find things to eat if you find out your little one needs the same. GOOD LUCK, and keep me posted. Dr. Chauksey at Metro is one doc....###-###-####
