Under Eye Is Red

My 2 yr old has a little cold, but this time around the whole area under his right eye down to his cheek is red, well, bright pink. It looks bruised, yet it's not purple. I have never seen this before. It's not swollen, his eyeball is not red, and his eye doesn't have any discharge. Do you think it's just irritated from the cold, or should I be worried about infection?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's getting better now, instead of worse...It's getting lighter and smaller. Maybe it was the cold or allergies, and I was worrying too much.. but I'll watch him and if it is still there, I will probably take him in. Thanks for all of your help!

My daughter had this when she "got" eye herpes. Nothing IN her eye got red, except for her rubbing it all the time. These "flare ups" happened whenever she got a cold. If you see a sore develop, get him into the ped. It may be the herpes virus in the lower lid. I hope it's not, and that it is just roseola or something else that passes quickly.

Could be 5th Disease, which is not a "disease" like you might think of it, but a mild illness. It is also referred to as the "slapped cheek" illness because those who get it can have the appearance of a slapped cheek. Here is an article about it: http://www.medicinenet.com/fifth_disease/article.htm
The only people who really need to be careful about being exposed to it are pregnant women. Hope that helps and your child feels better soon!

Could also be pink eye, even without the eyeball itself being red and without discharge. My son had this and his under-eyelid was swollen and red. Given all the different ideas you've gotten, I'd take him to the doctor.

Hi there,

My son had something that sounds similar earlier this year. Anything with the eye really needs to be checked out, even if it is just the skin around the eye. My son's eye lid ended up swelling up and we went to the ER. We found out that it was cellulitis. They usually have to do IV antibiotics for cellultis.

I hope this isn't scaring you, but just want you to know that anything with the eye or surrounding tissue is vital enough to ask your doctor!
