Uncomfortable but Not Full-on Sick

So my 4 year old son has been sleeping badly for the last few days. Stuffy breathing but not very stuffed up, acting cranky, less energetic than usual, but not super lethargic. No fever. He was swallowing funny and I checked out his throat - it's a bit pinker and the tonsils are a little enlarged.

Any suggestions to help him be more comfortable, and to help me not lose my sanity with the "out of sorts" kid fall-out?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

OH MY GOSH...

I am going on maybe an hour of sleep for this same reason.

My youngest was asleep but not asleep whining all night. He would not lay still.

He is severely delayed speech...So asking him what felt yucky was like asking a wall why it flat.

He is now out cold....To bad....It was just in time for my daily body alarm to go off....I cant sleep past 7:30......its just not possible....

Nap this afternoon:)

My middle guy was like this BAD as a kid! and to this day the first two days of a cold for him are so annoying.

Make sure he is getting plenty of fluids. This will help flush out his yucks faster. You can give him a little bit of pain reliever. I would maybe try one of the homeopathic cold remedies too. The Hylands stuff is good. You can get it at most drugs stores now days too.

Chicken soup...get the low sodium. the regular is full of sodium...which is not great for sick kids.

I would give him Gatorade or some form of electrolyte. Pediasure tasks gross.

It only tends to last a few days. They either normally snap out of it...or they get full on sick and crash needing to recoup.

URgh this is so frustrating!!

Remember to take care of your self too. you dont want to catch it(which is almost always what happens)and be down for the count with a feeling better kiddo.

Make sure you get lots of sleep and fluids. Maybe take an extra dose of Vit D and C....Elderberry helps shorten the length too...if you do get sick:)

Try a humidifier at night in his room. Lots of liquid, but cut back on dairy and sugar. If he'll tolerate it a saline rinse is great (my kids won't do it, but some do ).

Hi P.,

Elderberry syrup is simply food but it will enhance his immune system so that his body can fight off whatever this is. My girls used to tell their friends that it was what Mary Poppins gave Jane and Michael. It tastes good and can be taken straight or put in juice or tea. You can get it at a local health store or Vitamin Shoppe if you have one in your area. We keep it in the house just for occasions like this.

Hope this helps!

M.
