I personally went through it. My littlest one was only 5 months old when I had surgery to correct my herniated umbilical. I wouldn't say too much to your daughter in advance. Just tell her that the doctor needs to fix her belly button and they will do it while she is sleeping. And explain she will be sleepy for the rest of that day and that her belly button is going to have a boo-boo but that it will feel better in a few days.

My experience is that kids are far more resilient than we adults are! My 9 year old got her tonsils/adenoids removed about a year ago, and yes she woke up hurting and was not happy at all, but after the first day she was quite the trooper!

Good luck!

I would get more than one Dr.'s opinion. My neice and my cousin's child had this. Neither of them had surgery and with both of them, it corrected itself. I know it looks a little strange, but think about how painful a surgery like that is going to be. I wouldn't just go with what one dr. says.

My daughter had this and was so young I didn't have to explain anything. It wasn't bad for her because she was so young and resilient. Good luck.

My oldest and youngest had this surgery. OMG they both literally ran around the house hours after coming home from the surgery. I didn't go into details with any of it, now that they are 9 & 5 we talk about their itty bitty scars and why it happened. It was so easy, made me wish I were a child again. Good Luck.
