I have a newborn that is 8 days old. Today, after giving her a spongebath and swabbing her umbilical cord stump this morning, I noticed that her umbilical cord stump has been bleeding. It is not excessive, but it was enough to bleed through her onesie. Is this a normal thing or should I be concerned?

What can I do next?

Congrats on your new baby! How wonderful! Just keep the U cord area real clean...inspect every time you change her. I'd bet the cord stump is real close to falling off. Both of my kids' came off within 7-10 days from birth. My 2nd kid had a little bit of bleeding too...was no big deal...Just keep an eye out and keep it clean. Best wishes! P.

That happened to me as well, and it was so little I just waited until the next day. It had stopped then. If you feel weird about anything, I say call your pediatrician's office. Better safe than sorry...

my daughters bleed some right before it fell off to so I bet it is just getting ready to fall off.

Ellie's oozed a little for about a week or so, but it finally stopped. I thought it was a lot because it was on her shirt until my mom said it could be mixed with sweat from her tummy ( she was a summer aby also). I would just leave it alone and see if it seals up, if it is still bleeding tomorrow, call you pediatrician.

A little bleeding from the umbilical cord stump is normal, don't worry about it. Just try to be gentle with her, keep it dry (no tub baths yet until it falls off), and clean. If the skin around it looks red and irritated/infected, or if you see any pus oozing, call the doctor. It is probably getting ready to fall off, so as it pulls away from the body, you'll see a little blood. Hope this helps. P.S. I'm a nurse. =) C.
