Ultrasound Possible at 7 Weeks?

I am 7 weeks pregnant and can't get a doctor's appointment for another 2 weeks. We are very anxious to make sure things are OK and view the gestational sac and see the heartbeat. (I know you can't hear it until 10 weeks or so). I wanted to check if anyone knows of a clinic in Chicago where we can pay to have a pelvic ultrasound done this early.

Two weeks may sound like a really long time, but I would just wait. They can hardly tell anything at 7 weeks anyway, which could just make you more nervous. Hang in there. As long as you are feeling well, you should have no worries!

Hi A. - the only kind of ultrasound where the fetus can be visualized at this stage is a vaginal ultrasound. They will be ablet to detect the heartbeat and get a general sense of size/age. You should be able to have it done at your visit. In reference to another post, too many ultrasounds are not harmful to a fetus - that's why they use them. It is the use of sound waves, not radiation.

Congratulations! Wondering: does your ob do a routine, early internal ultrasound? There's really no harm in waiting another 2 weeks if they do. If, however, they don't, Northwestern Memorial Physicians' Group OB/Gyns routinely do an 8-week (or whenever you have that first appt) internal ultarsound.

Good Luck!!

It's been awhile for me, but I recall not having the first ultra sound until 9 weeks. I would wait til that appointment if I were you. I have a feeling there's a reason they wait 9 weeks.

I had a 7 week vaginal ultrasound with one of my pregnancies (because of some issues) and you aren't missing much by waiting a couple of weeks. Just a blob. And as you probably know, things can change quickly in the first trimester anyway. I think with my 2nd pregnancy we didn't have a US at all until halfway through the 2nd trimester.

Just try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy. Congratulations!

I agree, just wait out the 2 weeks. Nothing you can do in the interim to change anything anyway, except just keep yourself hydrated and healthy. But MOST importantly, relax!! Stress isn't healthy for anyone, you or the baby, so just try to put your feet up and distract yourself until your appt. Not much to see at 7 weeks anyway.

Congrats and good luck!! Pregnancy is a journey. I just delivered my 2nd baby and it's a wonderful time in our lives.

I was not able to get an appointment until my 8th week of pregnancy and they performed an ultrasound at my first appointment. They simply do an internal ultrasound. I was with Dr. Patricia Katz - she works out of Northwestern Hospital downtown. I hope this helps.

There is a reason to wait and not to have too many of them. Unless you've had fertility treatments, no one will do them that early.

Be patient and take big belly breaths, stress is not good for anyone.

I know you are anxious so see all that is going on with your unborn child. You have to be patience. Too many ultrasounds can be harmful as told by my doctor. If you can wait- try to. The best ultrasound to really look forward to is when they check u at about six or seven months. Then you can see the baby at his or her best:).
