Tylenol Causing Sleeplessness

My six year old spiked a fever of 102 today. We have been treating her every six hours with Children's Tylenol but it seems to be keeping her awake. I am pretty sure she will be home from school tomorrow so I was wondering if anyone knew of a fever reducer that won't keep her up. I want her to rest so she can get well. Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Afterwards my mother-in-law informed me that all her kids would get "jazzed up" with Tylenol so I will have to try Motrin or just live with the sleeplessness for future high fevers. It just caught me off guard because she had never had this problem in the past. Thanks

My son who is 14 Months old is sick right now with a fever. Tylenol doesn't seem to keep the fever at bay long enough for him to feel comfortable enough to sleep. I really like using Motrin, it seems to keep his fever down longer so he feels well enough to eat and sleep.

Hi R., my son had a fever and the doctor put him on a rotation of Tylenol and Motrin. Motrin is an excellent fever reducer and they do it that way so that it won't interrupt their sleep patterns. The first dose would be Motrin, then after four to six hours you use Tylenol then Motrin again after that. I didn't know that could be done until his doctor prescribed it to him that way. Good luck and I hope that helps.

You definitely can alternate the Motrin/Ibuprofen with the tylenol if you need to, since there won't be any duplication of medicine. Just keep track of when you give which medication (write it down) so you don't inadvertantly get mixed up or give the wrong dosage. I hope your little girl feels better soon.

have you tried alternating with motrin? my youngest (14 months)recently had a bout with a fever that just wouldn't quit!! i was giving her tylenol at home, but it just wasn't doing anything. I took her to the ER at doctor's and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with her and sent us home.
the next night i took her to children's and the first thing they did was give her a size-appropriate dose of motrin. within an hour, her fever had lowered from 103 to about 99.6.
i dont know if this will help your little girl at all, but i would give it a shot. good luck!!!

My brother works at a pharm. company. He says that if Tylenol doesn't make them sleepy then try Motrin. I have 2 kids I can use tylenol with and one I use motrin for b/c they have different reactions. Weird..good luck!

Yep, listen to the girls. I use childrens motrin. I think it works much better than the tylenol and alot of people have told me you can alternate them.

My daughter did this last week. Took her to the dr. and she had a double ear infection, she was given an antibiodic and told we could switch back and forth fron Tylenol and Motrin/Advil. Make sure she gets plenty of fliuds and good luck.

My son, who is 5, had a fever of 102 about 2 months ago that lasted for about a week. We finally took him to the hospital because he started vomiting and we just couldn't seem to break the fever. The doctor there told us to alternate between tylenol and motrin every four to six hours. I don't know if that will help with the sleeplessness, but they said that it will fight off the fever better.
Hope this helps.

Hi I would recommend trying Motrin. It actually helps better for fevers than the Tyenol for my oldest son. There is also Childrens Advil out there but I prefer the Motrin over the Advil. I hope this helps.
