My country, superstitious family said a child is not to go around anyone until they have their first round of shots. I was raised the same way and did the same with my kids. My husbands family take their kids to the nasty mall the day after they leave the hospital and guess what, they are always sick! Coincidence? Maybe but im thinking not! Keep that baby inside!
Congrats!

Young children do need to be exposed to some germs and dirt as they grow up, so their immune systems can develop normally. But not at two weeks. If you are breastfeeding, your baby is getting some protection from your breast milk.

But babies also have very delicate respiratory systems, and if they do get ill, it can hit them hard. And even illnesses that are not serious are very hard on the parents, because sick babies don't usually eat or sleep well. So I wouldn't want to take a new baby around other children during the season when contagious illnesses are becoming more common, either.

If the doc says wait, then wait. Don't be a hermit - you don't have to stay home for 6 weeks or anything, but another week or so is probably good. Have your hubby talk to the baby's doc so he knows your not being over-protective. :)

Talk to your pediatrician and then use that at your reason for not bringing the baby around others quite yet. Takes the burden off of you and puts it on the professional where it belongs! Congrats on your new little bundle!

It's usually okay. But if they get a virus and a fever before 6 weeks, they will hospitalize them and can't give them tylenol yet. Tell your husband that he could be looking at a huge hospital bill if you expose baby too soon.

You are the mom and you know what is best for your baby! I can see how your sister may be offended though. Can you make a rule about handwashing before anyone touches the baby? I went to a wedding recently and the couple brought their 2 week old, unimunized baby. No one held the baby but I thought that doing that was a little nuts. I think in your case, ask if anyone in the house is sick and if so, you can hold off on visits. Are you nursing? That will help your little one from getting sick.

My 2nd was born in may. Our pediatrician told us it was not a good idea to expose her for the first month. If she were to have gotten a fever the first 28 days, they would automatically admit her to the hospital with an iv and all. Of course it is good to be exposed to germs, but people don't just go expose kids intenionally. Stick with your instinct. I think it would be fine to have them over and you can always ask to have them sanititze and wash. Good luck.
