Two Questions.. Looking for Advice

Hello, instead of putting out two requests, I am going to put both my questions in one request.. I love this site.

1) I am looking for a good humidifier. So far I have purchased two and have taken them back. My son's room is somewhat big and most humidifers don't put out enough steam. Does anyone have any advice on a good humidifier.

2) I just started putting my son in crib from co sleeping. One of the problems I noticed is that the crib mattress isn't as hard as my bed. Do any of you know of any mattress pads or pillow tops you can recommend for a crib to make it feel a little bit more like a regular bed. I don't have the money to get a new mattress at this time so I am looking for an alternative. Any advice would be ever so greatful.

Thank you to all you wonderful Mommy's.

Hi M.,

We purchased a humidfier for our home from Sears (Kenmore) and it really supplies moisture in the air throughout the house. We usually turn it on in winter because it is so dry in our house (tile floors). It is a little costly but it pays in the long run. We haven't had much sinus infections or allergies since we have had it. So, if you go to Sears ask them to show you some styles and tell them you want a humidifier for the entire home. They will point you to right location.

For the mattress, you can probably go on the web and find some deals or you can always do what we've done if you didn't have the money to purchase a nice firm mattress and that is to put a thin board under the mattress. I think the babyhomestore website has some clearance on mattresses throughout the year. You can google to their website to find out.

I know Vick's makes some great humidifiers (check Target), we have two Cool Mist humidifiers and love them. They have different models depending upon the size of the room and how long you need them to run.

For the mattress the only thing I can think of would be to put a board over the springy support under the mattress. That would probably firm it up a little. I'd be afraid of putting anything on the mattress that isn't designed for little ones for safety reasons.

I don't think you'd want to use any type of "pillow top" for a crib, for the same reason pillows aren't used in cribs. You don't want anything too soft that your little one may suffocate on, even at one year old. At that age and weight I don't think they can tell how hard or soft the mattress is the same as adults can. I'm sure the mattress you have is just fine. Good luck on the humidifier.
