So our perfect, beautiful wonderful new baby was born last week. To say I am beyond thrilled would be a vast understatement. I was worried I wouldn't get to nurse - my other two BOTH were lactose intolerant. But we are nursing more than successfully!!!!!!

So I have two weird questions that I can't find answers to really. First is at night what do I do to not leak all over the place? He sleeps a lot so I wake up covered in milk - lol - and soaked shirts. Is there a trick for this that I am missing? I am so tired of washing bedding.

My next one is a bit more personal...one nipple is fine - doesn't hurt at all to nurse that side. The other hurts insanely bad. No blistering and it isn't bigger or smaller than the other. It just hurts. I nurse him the same amount on both sides b/c I've heard horror stories about getting engorged.

If anyone has any ideas on either question I would soooo appreciate it. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks gals! Found the problem for the sore nipple - other one started getting sore so I looked in his mouth and lo and behold he has thrush. So we have an appt. to take care of it (bring on the yogurt!). Thanks for the tips on the nursing bras at night - I need to go get a comfy one to wear.

First off, congratulations on the new arrival and successfully breastfeeding!!

I had the same problem for the first few months (I had an insanely abundant milk supply). At night I would have to wear an absorbent nursing bra with nursing pads in it. Sometimes I'd have to change the nursing pads in the middle of the night. That helped. Until he started sleeping through the night and I wasn't waking up to change the pads!

As for the sore nipple. I also had this problem. I talked to my lactation consultant about it and she thought it was do to improper positioning. After doing some slight adjusting I got more areola into his mouth and within a week the soreness was completely gone and never returned.

Good luck! I hope you find something that works for you. Breastfeeding is a little bit of trial and error :)

I had to sleep with a nursing bra on and nursing pads. this will definitely reduce washing your bedding, and nightshirts! I loved the Lansenoh pads, it comes in a purple package. They seemed to absorb more and pulled the moisture away from your skin better thanthe other brands.
Have you tried a different position for the side that is sore??

I used to put a hand towel or two in my shirt at night because I had a leaking problem as well. Disposable nursing pads worked really well also. They're made out of diaper like materials so they hold liquid really well.

Have you tried using a nipple shield on the side that hurts? You should call the lactation specialists at your hospital, I always found them to be very helpful.
