I have a two part question. My 7 month old son had the stomach virus on Nov 3. He was throwing up, high fever, lethargic. That lasted about 4 days..he lost 1 pound and now is better BUT is not eating. He used to eat 32 ouncesa day and eat 3 meals a day. Now he will barely eat 12-16 ounces a day and cries while he is eating. He is also congested, runny nose, and breathing heavy!!! Plus he has been sleeping through the night since he was 5 weeks old and is now up every 2 hours. What do I do??? He has been to the dr 3x so far and they think that nothing is wrong. We have good aetna insurance but our copay is 25 dollars. Do most pediatricians charge a copay everytime you go in to the office if it is for the same problem. WE went 3x in 12 week??? All info is appreciated

What can I do next?

I went through the same thing but I went to the er 4x in 8 day span and the docs twice. She had a virus and you can not treat them with antiboiatics, but my doc gave them to her and I went with my gut feeling and didn't fill it well the virus spread into her joints and couldn't walk and we spent 2 days in phoenix childrens hospital. If I would have given her just one dose they would have done way more test on her. As it was they did utrasound of her hip and x-rays. I hope your son gets to feeling better

Limiting / avoiding dairy and sugar is key to beating these bad bugs. Viruses and bacteri THRIVE on sugar and diary. I understand that milk / formula may be an essential part of your son's diet, so ask your pediatrician what is a safe way to limit this in his diet, temporarily. Lots and lots and lots of water and clear broths. Stay away from fruit juices!

If your child is breathing heavily, take him to the doctor. I would consider that an emergency. He probably isn't eating because he can't breathe. Also ask the pediatrician to show you how to use a suction bulb to suction the mucus out of the baby's nose. Ask them to watch the baby's throat right where it meets the collarbone, and the sternum, to see if he's "retracting" when he's breathing. He may have gotten weakened by a rotavirus or whatever he had that made him throw up, and he could be recovering from that or have something else. Make sure when you call for the appointment that you tell them you're worried about his *breathing* and don't emphasize anything else. They should weigh him as a matter of course when he gets there, so ask them then if he's lost weight since the last visit. But the breathing is the thing to worry about.

It is irritating to give them $25 every time you go but yes, every time you go you use their time which is a service you have to pay for. The co-pays really add up.

If you don't get satisfaction from the pediatrician and feel that they are discounting your concerns -- they ought to at least explain to you why they're not worried and not just say "everything's fine" -- it may be time to switch pediatricians.

Hi S.,
I would take my baby back in. I know it is so frustrating and can be expensive, to take a child in and get the same result, but being that he is breathing hard could be something serious. He may also have an ear infection because of the congestion and if he crys while eating it maybe hurting his ears. Also my girls always woke up throught the night when they had ear infections because lying down make them hurt more. Good luck! I know how stressful it can be when our babies are sick. Take Care!

I agree it sounds like rotavirus. If it is, I would take him again ASAP and have him diagnosed. Throw a fit if you have to. It's not something you want to get worse (of course, none of the illnesses our babies can get are any we want them to have). If they still say it's nothing and refuse to listen, I would suggest a second opinion, and maybe consider switching pediatricians. Good luck!

My son is just getting over the same thing. What ever it is, its going around pretty hard. He had a runny nose, cough, HIGH fever, terrible trimbling chills and throwing up with diarreha. It lasted about 8 days, went away for 2 days and now the runny nose and cough are back but thank God thats all. Everone with kids on my block have had it and everyone pretty much is saying the same thing...it goes away and comes back alittle less severe each time. Like its trademark.I think we are coming to the end. "KNOCK ON WOOD" It took my son about a week to really get his appetite back after the inital sickness ended. I stayed with just rice cereal untill his tummy was better and made 3 oz bottles of formula untill he felt like drinking, offering every few hour.He is still waking up alot like your little one but its getting better. I pay a co-pay everytime. It sucks I know :( It so hard to see our babies sick. I cant wait to not see that continues crust under his little nose!
If you ask me I think its the flu. Classic symptoms.

I went through the same type of thing with my daughter when she was that age. My doctor called it something like the "rodo" virus. Not sure the correct name for it. I took her to the doctors three times and an er visit in span of a week before they were able to correctly diagnose her ). They finally gave her some type of shot that made her feel a lot better(sorry I cannot remember the names for everything). It took her almost a week after she was feeling better to start eating properly. And yes..they charged co-pays and for thr dr. visits ALL three times I went! Hope your son gets to feeling better!
