Twins Waking up Way Too Early

We've gotten ourselves into a bad habit and I'm not sure how to break it. My 20 month old twins, still in their cribs, have started waking up around 4:30-5ish and crying until we take them into bed with us. Then they have no problem going back to sleep. Usually my husband will take one in our bed and then I'll take the other in the guest bed because they tend to wake each other up if we're all in the same bed. Problem is my husband is going to be on a project that travels a lot and I don't think I can deal with both of them alone. I tried to let one of them cry this morning and he cried from 4:30 until 5:30 (I separate them when they cry for longer than a few minutes) when I finally brought him into bed. I should mention that we let them CIO when they were 6 months old and since then they've gone to sleep no problem in the evening and if they wake up earlier than about 4 usually cry for a few minutes and then go back to sleep. Has anyone dealt with this problem? What did you do? With our older son we put him into a big boy bed when we started getting sleep issues (at 22 months) and would lie with him in his bed until he fell back asleep. Problem is the twins are in the same room and I've heard that you should put off putting twins into proper beds because it's party time for them.

What can I do next?

Hi N.,

Had you thought about getting an appointment book with 5 columns and put each of the family members in the heading of each column.

Put what you have to do in each column.

Go to bed earlier and get up with the twins.

Check out some support groups of mother's with twins.

here is a web site for a support group.

Good luck. D.

I would leave them in cribs til they are climbing out or the lunatics will be running the asylum! LOL
What about getting them up, changing their diapers, giving them sippies of milk, brushing their teeth and put them back in the cribs? They early morning effort may pay off for a nice late rising.
White noise machine, blackout shades, soft CD music all may help to delay their waking.

Have you tried putting them to bed a little later? Maybe they would sleep longer? I feel for you, that is an ungodly hour...lol!

God love ya for one....Are the twins still in cribs? Same or different cribs? I think you are right when you say to wait a while before putting them in big beds. What time do you lay the twins down? When do they fall asleep? I dealt with this prob, but not with twins. CIO method is ok, as long as your comfortable with it. I never was. crying, whining, and screaming are so different......hear it out, and decide what you need to do. Good kuck. Try a reward system of a song, or extra story before bed.
