Does anyone have any suggestions/recipes that have worked for them to coax their toddlers into eating. I have twins (g/g) that will be 3 11/29/08 and they eat NOTHING. I make things all the time (i have 6 kids altogether!!) and they won't budge. One of them is hooked on sweets, and i can't figure out how it happened or how to break this nasty habit!! We are a pretty healthy family, chicken, fish, pasta veggies and fruit, but they won't eat any meat - other than the occasional chicken nugget, and very few veggies. If anyone has any suggestions i'd love to hear them. I'm a stay at home mom. Thanks!!

Have you tried offering them dips for veggies, meat and/or fruit? My son loves dipping things in hummus, plain yogurt, mashed avocado...

I have two sets of twins and most of the time they all eat well. When I was having problems with this I cut out all snacks. That makes them hungrier at mealtime. I saw a Dr. Phil show once that said if they don't eat, cover the plate and serve it to them again for the next meal. I've threatened, but never done it. REWARD works better at this age than "consequesnces" so I also instituted a
No dessert unless you eat program. When the first child successfully finishes their meal, give them the dessert for all the others to see! You'll be amazed at how quickly those other meals disappear! Also, set a timer and even if they don't eat they have to stay at the table the designated amount of time. Sometimes watching everybody else eat is enough to get them to join in. I've also heard that it takes tasting something 12 TWELVE times to decide if you like it, so don't stop serving healthy food because they "don't like it." My kids eat mushrooms, onion, avocado, artichokes, cauliflower, meat, fish, lamb, etc. Hope this helps!

My 2-year old is also a picky eater. But, if I know I am making something new for dinner, I try to let her help me. Even if the "help" is only dumping the chopped veggies into a bowl and stirring them (steps I wouldn't even need anyway), and if we talk about the new dish all along the way, somehow my daughter is at least willing to take a few bites of it at dinner. It is a lot more time-consuming to have her "help", but if she thinks that she helped make it, she is more willing to eat it. I also have a salt shaker that is jammed most of the time, so sometimes I let her "add" salt to the finished dish (actually, only a few grains of salt come out, but she thinks she helped to "finish" making the dish.) Good luck!

Well if they like sweet foods, give them healthy foods that taste sweet. Like some things with cinimin. Maybe try introducing them to other foods they have not tried before, that they may like.

Each child is different.

I know my brother, sister, and dad all perfer fast food, and anything unhealthy, and I on the other hand like healthy foods, like broccolie, steams vegies, lemons, salads, and so on and so foward, but I am not so big on mean, though I will have chicken, and beef every now and then. And it took until I was preganante for them to change their eating habbits. Now we always have fish in the house, veggies, fruit, just about anything healthy, except there are still some things in there for the cravings, like pickle chips! Lol.

But like I mentioned, try introducing them to new foods, that you (as their mother) think they may like. :)

I also agree with the person below me, with the reward system. :)

Good luck!

I have a Stainless Steel hand Blender that does the veggie tricks. I bought it at Macys. My eldest son as a baby eats all fruits and veggies.
Around 18 months gradualy stops. He was with another child at baby sitter who was not eating any fruits and veggies.

This is how the hand blender works for me.
Put veggies of your choice (try different ones) To boil in water until tender.Remove from heat.Use hand blender to gring in same pot.Add some noodles and the same chicken nuggets that they like or sometimes cheese. My kids enjoy this at the same time eating all veggies.
You mention they are eating sweets. How does sweets get into your home.None at my home.My children dont eat candies.I like Dove Chocolate which they get to eat.I dont give and bodys children candy eaither.

Healthy food is very important. Please try.

My 2 year old girl has a very limited diet. I have to hide veggies in baked goods and dips. She eats more when she helps me prepare the food. The book The Sneaky Chef is helpful too.

I know how frustrating it can be when you make all sorts of food for kids and they don't eat it. I feel the same way - I throw out more food than they eat!

I have done a couple of things that have worked with my kids in terms of veggies. First, I have started making slightly sweet breads - zucchini bread, carrot muffins, apple muffins, etc. to get them some veggies in a way that they like to eat it. But after they eat it I always talk to them about the fact that those were vegetables. To keep the sugar down, I usually find recipes online that have comments from other people about how they reduced the sugar and oil with unsweetened applesauce and such because that way they are getting the natural sugar and sweetness and not the processed sugars. The other thing that I started to do was to saute the veggies for just a little bit in some bacon grease or with some bacon. My kids like the salty too and that has definitely make them enjoy green beans & peas. Finally, you can add some veggie puree (even just using babyfood) to yogurts that have some sugar in them...just make sure they are a taste match (the new veggie yobaby yogurts make good matches, but they have SO much sugar in them).

In terms of meat, the one thing that I have found is to brown ground meat with some spice (taco spice, bbq, other spices) and then once it is cooked to run it through the blender so it is even more ground (not too long, though, because then it can get grainy). Then I mix it in with hummus or other with rice and serve it to them that way.

Also, eggs yogurt and cheese are all good protein sources so if they are good eaters of those, that can help. You can also put some of the ground beef into scrambled eggs or sauce on a pizza or something.

I hope that helps - I feel your pain. Good luck
