My 14m old twins have started to skip their afternoon nap. I've pushed them from 10a to 11:30a, and they are sleeping 1 1/2-3 hours at a time. Here's my problem, one twin is doing great with the new schedule, and the other is rubbing his eyes and yawning all day (not to mention that he's REALLY irritable later in the day) Plus, he's waking up at 5a because he's overtired. I've tried putting him to bed in the afternoon, but he will not sleep. What should I do?

I know its hard, but you must remember that they are two INDIVIDUAL people, with different needs. I have 5 yo b/g twins and I don't think they have really EVER been on the same schedule, except now when they are in school. What one child needs as far as sleep, the other may not, you will have to adjust for each child. I know it's really nice to have them on the same schedule, but think of it this way, you will get one-on-one time with each of them!!!

It's tough when they are not on the same schedule. I have been known to rock my toddlers to sleep at least for a while to get them on the same schedule; of course then you have the problem of having them want to be rocked to go to sleep. You may want to be sure that the non-sleeper is full and that the room is quiet and dark. At 5, move him to one of your playpens instead of having him in the same room as the sleeper, so that maybe he will sleep some more without waking the sleeper. If you are in the Plano area, you may want to consider joining the Plano Area Mothers of Multiples at www.pamom.org. Good luck!

I have been so lucky that my guys were always on the same schedule. I dont even remember how I ended up getting them to do it (back then is all a blur now! : )
I agree with some of the other posters...move up their bed time if they dont nap. You may have one twin who doesnt need a nap anymore and one who still does. They will be cranky for a week or two while cutting out the naps too, so it wont happen overnight. My guys are 4 and sometimes still nap. I love that they are good sleepers, all my kids are, but Im sure I will hate it when they are older and I have a hard time getting them out of bed! ; )
Good luck!

You may need to have two different schedules until both become used to dropping that nap!
Let the tired one sleep or have quiet time in his crib and the not tired one stay up.
My twins were cranky for a week or two as they were dropping their afternoon nap. Once they get it figured out it goes pretty smoothly.

To me the 11:30 nap would be a morning nap. If they are at one nap a day then I would put them down around 12-12:30-after they've had lunch. If they are still at 2 naps a day then I would give them their 1st nap around 9-10(if they are early wakers)and wake them up after an hour, then put them down for the afternoon nap around 1pm

Hi, Heather. We have 2 1/2 year old twins, and I remember being where you are. At about 15 months, we switched to one nap per day, and it has been that way since for us. Initially, we would lay them down right after lunch (which was then at 11:30, so we would lay them down around noonish), and they would usually sleep until 3ish. Now, over a year later, we have lunch around 12:30ish and lay them down at around 1:30. It takes my daughter longer to fall asleep - she is more of a night sleeper, and our son is pretty much asleep once he hits the pillow (wounds like your little yawner). So, the best advice I can give is to modify their lunchtime a little so that you can skip their morning nap and lay them down earlier in the afternoon. It worked beautifully for us, and I hope it works well for you, too. :)

Did you move their bedtime up? When my twins dropped their second nap I moved their bedtime up to about six and that helped a lot. You might separate them at bedtime for a little while so the tired one can go right to sleep.

My twins are now almost 4, and I am trying to remember.... I am pretty sure I did the 11:30 nap, and one twin will always resist, it is just the nature of twins. Just stick with it, and the resisting twin will catch on.

That time period really stunk, so I'm so sorry. I just kept them both up until 1 or so, then put them down. I think you will find that they will sleep 2.5-3hrs, because they are so exhausted and still go to bed at 8. The first week doing this will be PURE HELL, but it's totally worth it. Do whatever you can to keep them up. I did everything and anything and after the first week, they adapted. My twins are almost 3 and they still nap at the same time. You can not function if they don't nap at the same time. You need your time and doing it this way gave me at least 2.5hrs of naptime.
