Tween Halloween Party-Dressing up as a Gypsy Fortune Teller

Several of the kids are having a Halloween get together this weekend. We are doing the usual weeie roast, hay ride, costume contest. I decided that as part of my contribution to the party (it's being held at another friend's home) I would dress up as a Gypsy Fortune Teller and do Palm Readings. I am not an official PR, nor is it a hobby. I just thought it would be fun to do. I asked the other parent and she agreed that sounded like fun. I don't want to offend anyone by doing this. It's only a gimick. What are your thoughts moms???

What can I do next?

I think it's great, as long as it's not a slut gypsy fortune teller. ;)

(In case you don't get my joke, I'm referring to the fact that all female Halloween costumes these days tend to be some form of slut costume.)

I would totally ham it up. Maybe get yourself a large box and dress up like the fortune teller booth you see in movies. Make crazy predictions like so and so will eat their lima beans for dinner or find a left shoe under their bed. Tell the kids "that's your homework line. Oh, I'm sorry, it's very long. You'll have a lot of homework on Monday."

I don't see how anyone could be offended, it sounds like fun!
Halloween is all about fantasy, the dark side and the "other" so a fortune teller fits right in :)

Sounds fun to me... Keep in mind, someone will always be a little too rigid and feel compelled to complain.

I say go have fun!

Totally fun - especially if you make it outrageous fortunes.

Like - you will marry a prince and live together in a huge castle on an island in the Pacific Ocean. You will have 15 children - all girls and you will never cut their hair.

Fun stuff!

Pretty sure none of the moms I know would be offended so maybe think through the list and see if anyone strikes you as being either Gypsy heritage or super Christian as someone said etc. Bc if not, I think it's a fantastic idea and I may steal it. :) I know my kids would love it.

Do you have any conservative Christian families amongst the group? If so, there might be some that don't like the palm readings. My mom would have been one of those moms. For me, I'd say, "eh, it's just a fun play thing."

I would say go for it. Like Liv said below, no matter what you do someone will find fault with it.

I'm a Christian mom and I don't have an issue with it. It's a fun, cute idea. I love the "homework line" in the palm reading mentioned by AV.

Does anyone else remember the joke palm readings from when we were kids? Where you'd point and say "here's your house, and the car, and here's *spit!* the pool!"

Hilarious every time.

I've done the same thing at parties and carnivals. Make sure people know it's all in fun so they don't take it too seriously. Otherwise, have fun with it! You may be surprised how many times you hear, "How did you know that?! Are you sure you aren't psychic?"

It is a Halloween party, so most likely, if someone would be that against your costume and some made up fortunes, they most likely would not be attending a party that was celebrating Halloween. You did check with another parent and it sounds like you are good to go. I would just make sure that the fortunes are silly rather than serious. . . You will be coming into a great fortune of candy!
