I don't recommend Kumon. I've known students who went there and didn't get the results they were looking for. Their strategy is drill, drill, drill. Most students that struggle in math need strategies to help them because rote memorization is difficult for them. I have heard good things about Mathnasium. Good luck.

I have had my kids in both sylvan and kumon. sylvan was a bust and they were there for almost 3 years... kumon was much better. it helped them quite a bit. Also I did kumon after school when i was in 8th grade. I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure how old your child is but my husband and all the kids in his family were in kumon. They were in kindergarten doing beginning algebra, no joke. This did amazing for them. I think if you start young its better. I am working on number 3 right now and he or she will be in the kumon jr. program.

also, kumon is a lot of work not only for your children but also for you. They may go twice a week but they have work everyday. They have to be timed and it has to be graded daily. It is not a lot of fun when you are on vacation. just be prepared and know what you are getting into.

Does your school provide tutoring? Some schools have students/ or adults who will tutor the student either during the day, or afterschool. Some school districts also keep a list of individuals who can/ will tutor.
Good luck.

ask at school first. then try your local library - they sometimes have free tutoring. then call your local high school and see if any students are available. i just had to do that and got the name of a graduate who is tutoring for 20 an hour. good luck!

Before you go to outside sources and spend unnecessary money for testing, etc.

Go to your school's guidance counselor. MANY teachers tutor on the side, about $50/hr. PLUS you want your student to learn the techniques the way your school is teaching them.

Also, MANY schools have free tutoring afterschool.

Is their school not offering any help? Before paying outrages fees like at Kumon of Sylvin (sp?), check at UTA, TCC, etc. A lot of times the students that are doing their education degrees do tutoring as well. I've also seen a lot advertise on craigslist. We had looked into that for my daughter b/c the tutoring at her school was full. Thankfully they ended up having a spot come open for her.

Also, my sitter just graduated with her teaching degree, but due to all the job cuts/freezes in the districts can't get a job to finish out the year. So she has been tutoring for the time being. If you'd like I can check with her and see if she's taking on any more kids. You can email me directly at ____@____.com is amazing and my girls absolutely LOVE her!!

Hope that helps!!

We are using Wyzant. They come to the house (but you could meet at a library, etc., if you preferred). We found 3 people of interest for our area. Tried the 1st one and he was a bust. Tried the 2nd one and he is just great. So, never tried the 3rd choice. I'm sure that the tutors are hit and miss, but we found a great one! Their rates vary. We are paying what seems to be the upper end at $50 per hour. You can get a lower rate by paying for multiple hours at a time...but we just pay as we go.

Some teachers will provide tutoring after school for free, even if your child isn't in their class.

I am also a math tutor, and I am located in SW Arlington. I would be glad to help your child. Feel free to message me if you would like more info.

Good luck!
