I need help. How do I make turkey burgers taste more like burgers? Please tell me what you put in them. My family will eat turkey, but it is not a matter of, "I can't taste a difference", like they say. I think they eat it because they are hungry. Share your favorite recipes please.

So What Happened?

I sauteed some onion and added salt, pepper, parsley, and poultry seasoning. I grilled them on an iron skillet and topped them with a slice of provolone cheese. My husband and I thought they were really good, but my daughter ate half of hers and said she couldn't do it anymore.

I also picked up a couple of salmon patties. This was new for her, as my husband and I don't eat fish. She smelled it and began to gag. Then agreed to taste it. She put a bite and stretched and arched her back and waived her hands in the air saying nope.

The reason: Her figure skating coach who is vegetarian has always suggested we feed her wrong. Well she is right. My daughter was eating fast food junk any time her and her dad were alone together. I was also guilty of buying breakfast muffins, bagels, and topping everything with cheese. We have cut back on that and she has dropped the chubby fingers and face. The other day, her coach was so happy with her strength and improvements, but said now we have to work on the stomach. My daughter is not fat, but has a big tummy. It looks like a beer belly. Kids have teased and insulted her. Anyway, I told the coach we eat steak or hamburger and sometimes chicken. She said the beef had too much fat.

I agree with a couple of things. First the beef takes a long time to digest. I am rather uncomfortable when I eat beef. The other thing is the coach said wait until she turns 13, she will not be happy with the extra weight. I should teach her to eat properly now. I wanted to argue back and tell her she doesn't eat that bad, but then realized that she is right in that aspect. I reminded my husband that we used to have to check the older daughter to make sure she wasn't jamming her finger down her throat after dinner.

The fish came from the hockey coach. My husband was talking to him and he said she is growing fast and should have plenty of good calories...fish is good. He said she needs the fish oil for her joints. I told her (daughter) we would try them all to see if we can find a fish dish she likes. Any fish suggestions would be great.

You can't make turkey burgers taste like real burgers. It's physically impossible. Sorry.

IMO, the stuff is just vile. I'll eat ground beef, pork, and venison, but ground poultry just doesn't work for me.

I'm sorry, but I think they are disgusting. I love turkey and I like hamburgers (not a big red meat eater) and I cannot stand ground turkey. I hope you get some good ideas, but if it were me, I would just look for other ways to be healthy.

Turkey burgers won't taste like beef burgers, but they can be delicious. Some people try to make the turkey taste like beef, but they go through many complicated steps and add onion soup mix, sauces, spices, seasoning packets, and other things that add processed chemicals and additives. The turkey burgers end up filled with artificial ingredients, and they're not only less healthy - they're actually unhealthy.

Are you trying to cut down on fat, or trying to eat less red meat, or just trying to make something different for a change from regular burgers?

First, what kind of ground turkey are you using? Ground turkey made from dark meat will be more flavorful, but it won't be very different from ground beef in terms of fat and cholesterol, etc. Ground turkey made from all white meat will be slightly healthier, but can be dry and less flavorful. Try using a combination of dark and white meat to make them taste better. Some packages of ground turkey list the fat content, but if what you're buying doesn't list that, the meat manager at the supermarket can inform you about the fat content and whether it's white meat, dark meat, or a combination.

Turkey burgers generally need added ingredients for moisture and flavor. You might try sauteeing some onions in olive oil and adding those to the turkey. Don't mix in raw onions, but tender sauteed ones. Or add an egg to the turkey mixture.

You also can add some cooked bacon, or some lean ground pork to the turkey, and some nice fresh herbs. Or add lean turkey sausage to the mixture.

Don't try for "I can't taste the difference", but go for "these are really flavorful and delicious".

Turkey doesn't taste like beef. Doesn't matter how you cook, season or prepare it. It won't taste the same. Doesn't mean turkey can't taste great though! I actually prefer the taste of turkey to beef.
Instead of passing turkey off as beef, just cook turkey to taste good on it's own and call it what it is, turkey.

I think you can actually make a vegetarian burger taste better and more like a traditional burger than you can with turkey. I top it with onion, tomato, etc. I like Boca burgers and they have different flavors. I use turkey in recipes but never as a burger. Too gamey tasting for me.

We add crushed walnuts to homemade turkey burgers, makes a huge difference in taste. The fat content carries the flavor of whatever else you put in there. I agree that steak seasoning is really good, too.

I completely disagree with their dietary advice. Cut the sugar and white carbs and they'll drop the tummy weight in a flash. We have to watch what our kids eat too and it's really easy if I ease off the sweets and breads for a while. My hockey player sometimes needs a reboot when it's off season, so we cut down on the sugars. It only takes a week or so for him to get slim and trim again. I also have to watch that he doesn't eat more food than he needs, so portion control overall is part of it too. I'm not opposed to cutting out the beef, if it makes you all feel better, but the real key is to limit the sugar and carbs.

Part of the problem might be that it's not supposed to taste like what it's not. Maybe you don't call it a "burger" or don't expect it to be a hamburger. Don't season it like steak and top it with cheese--yuck.

For a ground turkey sandwich...a little olive oil (for flavor and moisture), salt, pepper (maybe jalapeno), garlic, basil....

Garlic, salt, pepper, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, lemon zest.
Buy the turkey with higher fat content too-alls. -there are different varieties of ground turkey.
I recently had turkey meatballs (homemade) that tasted exactly like beef meatballs. It's possible. Just add LOTS of seasoning!

To tell you the truth, If I have to use turkey in something like a burger, I do half and half. Half beef and half Turkey add an egg and season with garlic salt and pepper.

Turkey is very lean and so it dries out. You need to add some fat.. The bacon is a good idea. Everyone loves bacon!

Whenever I cook with ground turkey I add cumin and red chile powder along with salt and pepper, garlic too if you have it. Also, Worcestershire sauce and shred some onion into your mix (that will help it not be so dry). One time my hubby couldn't even tell the difference (it was loose, not burger type), he thought he was eating ground beef and was surprised it was turkey.

I have a friend who adds finely diced water chestnuts to them so that they don't dry out when they cook. Won't make them taste like beef, but will add some texture and keep the dryness at bay.

I don't beef so I have nothing to compare it to. One recipe I like is 1lb of turkey, a can of black beans(smashed a little with a fork), bread crumbs, and Parmesan cheese. Mix together and this will make 4 big patties. Then grill. Found this recipe online and it's pretty good.
