Tummy Troubles - Prescott Valley,AZ

My son is now 4 and a half months old, and we are still having a VERY difficult time with tummy time. He screams, like he's hurting, and due to this, he is not reaching some milestones, like being able to lift his head for more than a few minutes, or stiing, even with support. I've had other mothers suggest that he may have acid reflux. He does have many of the symptoms, such as appearing to be in pain when pressing on his stomach, coughing often throughout feedings. Any ideas/ tips would be greatly apprecitated.

What can I do next?

I had the same problem with my son. He cried constantly for the 1st year of his life. I was told he was gassy or had on thing after another. I tried several different types of formula but never soy. When he reached his year mark I gave him regular milk and the seemed to aggravate the issue even worst so I switched him to soy milk and all his problems went away. He is now 2.5 and can have regular milk but I still give him very little just to be safe. I say switch him to soy formula & see what happens.

Hi. I'm K. and I have four semi grown kids (12,14,15,and 16).I raised all of mine by the baby wise books...couldn't have done it any other way as they were so close together. However...that said, all kids are different. I'd see if he has trouble digesting something you eat. I'll give you a list of things my kids couldn't digest and let you work through it. According to our pediatrician, if you schedule feed (every 3 to 4 hours), the food you eat enters your milk production after the second feeding. So if you nurse him at 8 and 11 am, what you ate at 7am will be in his milk for the 11am feeding. What you eat for lunch he'll generally get for dinner etc. According to the dr. the following is a list all babies generally have trouble digesting:
Dairy (all of it)
eggs
nuts
beans
broccoli
cauliflower
fish.
Some of my kids could also not digest chocolate (that was torture) or tomatoes from a can as they were too acidic.
I hope this helps. And feel free to ask questions if you'd like!
K.

Hi, sorry to hear about the tummy troubles. It is so hard to tell exactly what's wrong when they're so little. When my son went through that my mom had me go "old school". Fennel tea- works WONDERS!!! 1 cup of boiling water with one or two seeds cooled down put in a bottle (w/out seeds of course) or if you need it ASAP double recipe then 1/2 boiled water mixed w/ 1/2 cool water just enough to be bottle temp. if it's gas with in MINUTES air will be released from both ends. If you're breastfeeding make it and drink it yourself. It's actually pretty good and I drink it anytime I'm a little "bloated". Fennel seed is put into a lot of foods (sausages, pasta sauce, pizza sauce etc.) because it helps digestion. I've been known to carry the seeds in a baggie and just sucking on a couple till the flavor is gone if I can't make tea.
Hope this helps.

Tummy time doesn't necessarily have to be on the floor. Recline in a chair and put him on your chest. He will lift his head to see your face. My son also has trouble with tummy time and I always have him on my chest. He likes it much better than being on the floor on his belly.

I have 4 children... one of them HATED tummy time and one would only sleep on his tummy. The other two I don't remember...LOL Anyway, they all had food allergies too. My child who hated tummy time, I would put her on her tummy a set time every day. For example; maybe for 15 minutes once or twice a day etc. I was able to figure out what my kids were allergic to when I was breastfeeding them. They'd be fine unless I ate certain foods. All four were allergic to dairy products and milk. One of mine was also allergic to gluten, corn, chocolate etc. .... I just had all my kids allergy tested (ages 6, 9, 14, 16) and they were still allergic to 20+ things that I already figured out. They never outgrew them so I had them cleared with needle - free acupuncture. We're still working on them but it made all the difference in the world...

Definitely check with your pediatrician about the possibility of acid reflux.

As for hitting those "milestones..." just remember that it is just an average as to when children achieve them. My first child absolutely hated tummy time... just hated it. She cried and cried... didn't want any part of it. She was also a tall, chunky baby (all 3 of mine were! LOL) and so she hit those physical milestones late. She eventually hit them then it was just watch her go! Fast forward to today, she is a very healthy and active 6 YO... nothing wrong with her except the occasional 6 YO attitude! LOL

Good luck!

He still seems a little young for lifting his head but thats okay to if he does a little. I would really invest in a bumbo seat it helps them to sit up as well as they get excersise from lifting their head. Like the other said get him into a specialist if they are thinking he has acid reflux.
