Tummy Time - Saco,ME

My 8 1/2 week old daughter dislikes tummy time. I have tried it on the play mat and off, on a rolled towel, on a blanket, on the boppy, on the bed, with toys, without toys... i don't know what else to try! She just doesn't seem to like it no matter what. She likes lying on her tummy if she is on my chest, but that seems to be the only way. She can lift her head while lying on my chest, but it's not exactly the best place for her to lift her chest or learn to crawl. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Any suggestions would be wonderful! :)

What can I do next?

I would wait until she's a little older to put your baby on her tummy, and enjoy her being 8 1/2 weeks, because before you know it she'll be off running. As a first time mother, you are eager for her to start developing as fast as she can, but things happen in their own time. Enjoy your daughter!

HI, YES I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN WITH MY DAUGHTER, NOW 1, SHE HATED IT. I PUT DOWN A REALLY COLORFUL BLANKET AND SOME TOYS TO PREOCCUPY HER, I ALSO GOT DOWN ON MY BELLY AND INTERACTED WITH HER. THEY SELL ALL KINDS OF PLAY MATS NOW, ALL DIFFERENT PRICES TOO. THERE'S A WATER ONE WHICH LOOKS REALLY COOL. ASK HER DOCTOR TOO, JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT SHE'S NOT IN ANY PAIN. MOST LIKELY SHE DOESN'T LIKE THIS "CHANGE" BUT IT'S GOOD FOR HER. SHE'LL GET USED TO IT, AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT SHE'LL BE ROLLING OVER AND YOU'LL HAVE A WHOLE NEW ISSUE. LOL

My daughter (also an October baby) hated tummy time at first. One thing I found was that when she was not restricted by a lot of clothing, specifically only in a diaper, she would tolerate it for longer periods of time (I actually discovered this when I was trying to get a cute pose for last year's Christmas card). I would also get down on the floor with her on my stomach and play with her. When she would start to fuss I'd help her roll to her back and let her rest for about a minute and then put her back to her tummy. As she developed more strength it no longer bothered her. We also kept her on our chest a lot, however our doctor told us that with regard to tummy time, being on our chest didn't count.
Hope this helps.

I agree. You are doing the right thing giving her opportunities for tummy time. My daughter was the same way at first so I think it is only a matter of time. Emma used to get very frustrated with tummy time when I set her on the floor with toys or on her playmat, but by a 2 1/2 months or so she really enjoyed the new outlook. I'd say just keep doing what you're doing, as she is getting the practice laying on your chest, and do short intervals of a couple minutes other places during the day...I used to lay Emma down near her mobile or put her toy caterpillar right in front of her to give her some motivation. She'll get the hang of it! :)

my daughter is five months old and still hates it with a passion. ive tried everything to try to get her too tolerate it more, but she just doesnt like it. im not worried about it though because my son was the same way and hes fine. i just limit it to a couple minutes a day ounce or twice a day. some babies just always hate it until they get more mobile.

I wouldn't worry about it so much, she is still really little. It will happen when she is ready. Congrats on your baby girl.

My daughter also didn't like tummy time. I just would keep trying a few times each day for as long as she would allow, even if just seconds. That's what I did and eventually I saw that my daughter would last a little longer at times. She never really liked it for a lengthy period of time and she never had a problem holding her head up. So don't worry and just keep trying.

You're doing the right thing. It's important for her to have tummy time, of course, but if she's intolerant keep her tummy time limited to a couple of minutes at a time. Then gradually up the time as she gets stronger and more able to handle it. At her young age, tummy time on your chest is a great thing. Not only is she lifting her head and using her muscles, but she's also getting the eye contact and face time and interactions with you as well. Keep up the great work!

I have a 6 month old son who LOVES to be on his tummy, but this wasn't always the case. He didn't start to like it until he was about 3 months old. I did the same thing...kept him on my chest and played with him that way, then I'd put him on the ground with just his upper half on my chest and then eventually put him completely on the ground next to me. Now whenever he's on his back, he rolls over to be on his tummy. Give it a little while and she'll soon enjoy it...or maybe not enjoy it, but deal with it:)

You are doing the right thing. Tummy time is important. It helps your baby develop upper body strength and also prevents her head from getting flat on the back. Most babies don't like tummy time in the beginning, especially since they sleep on their backs. You should just keep trying. Put her down with some toys just as you have been doing and let her stay there as long as she allows. It my only be for a minute in the beginning, but gradually she should be able to stay for longer periods of time without fussing. Try to work up to ten minutes of tummy time a day (that's what I was told was a good time).
