M.P.
Tums are not something to really be given to kids for their tummy aches. I would just give her some ginger ale or a little flat coke and maybe saltines.
My 6.5 yr old is has strep throat. She keeps complaining of her tummy hurting extremely bad! Does anyone have any remedies to help ease her pain besides Tums? (i don't care for those much) Thank you in advance :)
Thank you everyone for your responses ;) My daughter is feeling much better now. She must have had the tummy ache from the strep.... the antibiotics haven't bothered her besides tasting awful. She woke up this morning and she said her tummy is not hurting any more. YAY! Her throat is still a bit sore but I believe the antibiotic she is on must be a strong one only five days! Thanks again everyone!

My "baby" (she's 17 now) used to get nauseous to the point of throwing up with strep. Come to find out it's not uncommon. Strep affects the lymph nodes (which is why some kids get swollen glands in their neck/throat). There are also lymph glands in the abdomen. They get inflamed & swollen with the strep and push against parts of the stomach and intestines, causing the discomfort. If she's on antibiotics, the nausea will go away in a day or two.
Another possible cause is the antibiotics themselves. Did the tummy ache start after the treatment did? If so, make sure she has food in her stomach before she takes her medication. Antibiotics can cause stomache distress in some people.
Poor little one! And poor mama!
Did you take her to the Doctor?
Strep, or untreated Strep, can affect other parts of the body.
Perhaps, you should tell the Doctor of her current symptoms.

Or perhaps, is she taking medication? And maybe that is causing a sore stomach?
You need to tell the Doctor.
Try honey and having her drink power aide.
Also our doc suggests avoiding meat and milk during tummy trouble times as they can aggrevate an already upset stomach.
Good Luck!
I don't have a solution but its definetly a side effect. I took my 4 yr old to the doc yesterday for fever and a tummy ache and she was diagnosed with strep.
I don't recall any stomach aches when my kid had strep. And he had it a lot. I'm guessing that whatever germ/virus caused the strep, tho, is causing the stomach trouble. But the strep is not the culprit.
Vernor's ginger ale is really good for belly aches. If it's anything worse, there's also aloe vera juice. You can get that at Better Health or Whole Foods stores. Gingermint tea is good for stomach troubles.
If she's on antibiotics for the strep, talk about probiotics with your pediatrician. You want to keep her system healthy as possible while the meds are in her. And afterwards keep her immune system up. That could mean less strep and thus less other troubles.
Ginger ale, or the ginger lollipops a lot of pregnant women use for morning sickness symptoms. Although I'd go with cold, "stale" ginger ale first - just let it sit out so it unfizzes so it doesn't bother the throat so much, the coldness will help soothe the throat too.
Course she might just be hungry if she's not been eating because of the strep throat. best of luck!
If your daughter is on an antibiotic for Strep, it's probably the side effects of the meds. Offering her yogurt with live active yeast cultures might help, because it puts the friendly bacteria back into her system. Also, give her the medication after she's had something to eat. It causes less stomach upset that way. If it continues, check with your doctor. HTH
it could be the lymphnodes in her tummy area are also infected with strep. one time when my son was 5, he started complaining about his stomach hurting bad, didn't even want the belt from the car seat touching him, i took him to the urgent care, they thought he had appendicitis! so they sent me to ER, the ER doctor thought the same thing, but my son's white blood count wasn't high enough, so thank God this doctor decided to slow down and test for a few other things. Sure enough it was strep. I said to him isn't strep a sore throat? he said it can present in either the stomach area or the throat. (or maybe both in your little ones case)
So if its an upset tummy from the antibiotics, I would say ginger ale, like vernors.
but if its pain from the strep, I bet ibuprofin may help?
Enzymes help with acids in the stomach. I use EZ-Gest (which is in capsule form and has to be swallowed) for my acid reflux. They are gentle and are natural.
If your daughter can't swallow a capsule, a local health food store may have enzymes in a chewable form.
Good luck and I hope she feels better!
Her tummyache is probably from the antibiotic. Tums will not help that, those are for heartburn. If it is a really painful tummy ache she might be havng an allergic reaction to the antibiotic. Some of the antibiotics that end in --syn can cause terrible tummy aches! You should check with the doctor.
