Im thinking of having my tubes tied after my 3rd is born in a few weeks. Im wondering if there are any side effects, besides no more babies. Is it and easy procedure? Pros/cons? Or should i have my husband get a vasectomy????

What can I do next?

I had mine done 4 years ago with no problems. I did however have a c-section and they just did it while they were in there.

Pros - no more kids
Cons - no more kids.

Good luck!

I had mine 4 weeks after my last child was born (4th child), I didn't have a c-section. No problems, no complications. I was immediately sterile, unlike the vasectomy, which can take up to a year for the man to be completely sterile. It's now almost 9 years later, and I don't regret my decision AT ALL.

I positively did not want more children. Even if my husband dies tomorrow, I know for a fact I don't want any more kids. My husband doesn't want any more, either, but I wanted him to be able to have another if I died, which is the main reason I got sterilized instead of him. My fertility is my responsibility, I don't buy into the argument that I "had the babies, so he should get fixed". That's bullsh*t. I don't want any more kids, so I took the initiative and took care of it.

vasectomy will put him down longer than a tubal will you. I had one in may of 08 I was in and out in 15 minutes about an hour in recovery. I have a tiny scar below my belly button and the other hole is in your belly button. once I was released i had no pain. I think I took pain killers as a precautionary for about 2 days and quit taking them. no problems since. and I didnt do it at birth I had it about a month later and if you have it when you have the baby it would probably be easier than what i did which was a breeze. I found no cons at all except when I first come out of anestisia I went ow ow ow and they gave me a shot and I never noticed it again. it really didnt hurt that bad on a scale of 1-10 probably a 3

I had the procedure done 27 years ago...so I am sure things have changed a lot...but I went home the day after my tubaligation and the only "side effect" that I really noticed was some soreness in my abdomen for a few days. No hormonal issues or anything else.

Before you make the decision to get a Tubal you need to do some research on Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. It can have a life long debilitating effect on women.

Here are some links -

I know there are many women who have tubal ligations and have no problems afterward. I suspect there are many more who DO have problems, but don't realize the connection.

I just had mine tied last year during my c-section last year and have been happy with things so far.

If I hadn't ended up with a c-section we had planned to go the vas route so I think it just depends on things for you. I know Tubals are much less invasive now even if it's not during another planned procedure.

I had my tubes tied after my second child, with my C-Section I was good with that until a nurse friend of our said that sometimes because of the trauma of the c section the tube tying doesnt always work and go to about a 50/50 chance... not good for me so I had my doctor put titanium clips. I have not had any real side effect I do get cramps a little worse than I used to but not terribly bad that is about it.

The vasectomy is a much less serious procedure than the tubaligation. If you can get your husband to agree, that is your better option.

As for the tubal, the most important thing is to know is that etopic pregnancies can occur and if you are not on other forms of birth control your menstral cramps will be more intense.

I had a tubaligation 6 years ago after my son was born. I had a c-section and it was easy when they already have you open. The recovery was from my csection so I didn't notice anything from the actual tubal.

That being said, I started having problems about 2 years after my tubal. Major cramps, very heavy bleeding, week or more menstrual cycles, big blood clots (sorry if TMI). I had a doctor once tell me that I basically made my body think that it was in a pre-menopause state. I don't know if that is true or not, but I definately saw a huge change from before the tubal and after. I also agree with what Terra D wrote about the Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome, and a few years ago and thought I had some of those traits too. But, I never asked a doc about it.

I recently got back on birth control a few months ago because I couldn't handle the bleeding anymore. I feel so much better! But it does suck that I got the tubaligation in the first place so I wouldn't have to take a daily pill or pay for it every month!

My new OBGYN told me that since I am pretty young (30 now) that maybe I never knew what my "real" cycle was like being that I started birth control at 16, got off at 21, got pregnant twice, and immediately had a tubal. So he could be right about that also.

Good Luck with any decision you decide!

If you're going to have a c-section, then go for the tubal, but if it's going to be a completely separate procedure -have your husband get a vasectomy! The procedure, cost and recuperation are FAR less for a vasectomy than a tubal! It's easy to do a tubal if they're "already in there" but completely different if you're doing it on its own. My husband had a vasectomy, and it's been great! I did a lot of research too.

I had one along with other abdominal surgery about 30 years ago, so I didn't have a "normal" recovery time. But I had no problems or side effects and was so glad for the ability to avoid pregnancy. I've had a number of friends who had very easy recoveries; only a day or three off work or not lifting kiddies at home, no significant amount of pain.

I've also known a few men who have made MUCH bigger deals out of their vasectomies ;-).

IMO, the vasectomy is the easy choice. My husband was gone for about 90 minutes, and drove himself home. He laid around a day or two, and was back to work on Monday morning. It is such as easy procedure compared to you having a tubal. Unless of course you have a schedule c-section? Well then they'll already be in there and could tie them during your surgery.
