Hi B.,
My daughter had tubes in her ears and my doctor told me to hold off on ear piercing till the tubes are out. My doctor told me that they have to adjust to having tubes in there ears first. My daughters tubes came out when she was 2 and then we got her ears pierced.

My daughter had tubes put in 2 months ago- when she was 14 months old. The ENT specialist Dr. that did the surgery- he said nothing about not getting ears pierced. You should probably just call & ask the Dr's nurse though, just to make sure. But I think that would have nothing to do with the surgery.

I hope this helps, I don't think it really matters. They are differnt parts of the ear. I have worked on a Peds surgery floor. where I have seen them pierce their ears while they where in for the surgery. I would say as long as she seems to be over the discomfort of surgery go for it. If you are still unsure call your Doctors nurse line and ask. They are always more then glad to help.

I would ask her ENT, but I wouldn't think you need to wait long. She should have a checkup with the ENT about a month after the surgery and should be pretty well healed by then. I would ask then.

I wouldn't think it matters whether she has tubes or not once the surgery site has healed as earing are outside the ear.

If you are dealing with tubes with your baby, there is a good posibility that she has food allergies. A medical dr will not tell you that. Something is causing the fluid buildup. Most people find that if they remove the allergen, the symptoms clear up. Since she is so young, a good place to begin would be formula, and cereals. Gluten intolerance is increasing, which has to do with wheat. Dairy, even in formula is extremely hard to digest.

My son had tubes also and as long as she's ok with someone touching her ears she will be fine. I know at first they are a little touchy about people being by their ears but ones that's over. Also if she has to have drops at all I would wait until they are done because they may drain into the newly pierced ear and get it infected.

I don't know, you might end up with her tugging on her ears because of discomfort from the tubes...and that would hurt her. It seems like you might also be risking infection, which could be problematic. I tend to think that having ear problems to begin with can be compounded by piercing while she is a baby and maybe you should wait for piercing her ears--the tubes were obviously necessary but piercing is elective. Also, there is the pain factor. I am sure she experienced at least a little pain when she got the tubes put in her ears, so why make her go through more? Besides, what does your doctor say? How about using fancy little stickers on her ears for now rather than piercing, so she can get a head-start on being glamorous like her big sister? They do make very nice and small, good quality stickers which you can find in the nicer boutiques. It is a safe option and you'll fool everybody. Besides, that way you can wait until she is old enough to appreciate having pierced ears like her sister and it may make the whole experience a whole lot more tolerable for you both. You know, I just thought of something. Why not have them pierce her ears at the hospital when she has the tubes removed? That way she will not experience the pain and it can be done safely when you know there is not nearly as much risk as you're suspecting there is currently? That's what I think.

B.,

I would wait about 6 weeks just to be sure she is not having any pain or trauma from the surgery. She should be OK after that.

Why not wait until your daughters are old enough to decide for themselves whether or not they want peirced ears? I don't understand why you would want to have a baby with earrings...and what about the times when they get hurt rolling around and playing like children do. And what about the sagging ears and the rips and elongated holes due to too heavy earrings for too long and accidents????
