Have you looked into allergies as a cause of ear infections? I've heard wheat and dairy are the most common
My youngest girl (1) has an apt with an ENT (Dr Stein) Friday and may need tubes...Any personal experiences with them? We are in Boynton.
Thanks for all the responses. Dr Stein and his staff were very nice and kid friendly. My daughter did well on her hearing test, so that was a good thing. Dr Stein suggested we try 4-6 weeks of zyrtex and nasonix before considering tubes...so today she got her first doses and we will see how it goes. It seems like a long time to wait but as long as she doesn't get worse then I'm good with it.
7/30 update...we came back from vacation just a week after the ENT visit and she already had another ear infection :-(

i had tubes put into my ears as a young child due to ear infections... they stayed in till i was about 10 and then one day they just fell out... inever evenknew that i had them in but my mother did say that inever had an ear infection again and that it was the best decision ever. i would do exaclty what you were told and i think you will be quite happy with the results.
My 21 month old son will be getting them on August 4th..........I've done the research..........my friend's three children has had them a few times!! It is a one minute procedure and they are not completely knocked out they are in twilight and a couple of hours later they are playing like nothing happened.....................My son is getting them because of 6 ear infections in his little life 4 this year alone, he has a speech delay and when taking a hearing test it runs flat because he has constant fluid behind his eardrums..............
If you are going to do it, make sure to get your ear molds made at least a week earlier (your child will have to use them for bathing and swimming) Where do you live? How old is your child? I am in Wellington.............
My son has ear tubes since he was 11 months old and now he is 2 1/2. It was the right decision all the way. he has not had 1 ear infection since then. He saw Dr Spektor in Boynton Beach. He is excellent. I highly recommend him. he made me feel real comfortable and he has been doing it for years. he is know all through South Florida. His office is hagen Ranch and Boynton Beach Road behind the Super Target.
Within days my son who has speech delay started making animal noises.
Also its not a scary procedure. It was over in 20 minutes.
good Luck
Hi, my name is M. age 50. I am mother of 2 grown sons, and grandmother of 5 beautiful grandchildren. My oldest son had ear problems at the age of 2 and the e.n.t. Sugested tubes for his ears. The operation really helped him alot with the constant ear aches, and like the doctor said, they came out on there own, after the ear inflamation and the fluid in his ear subsided, he was cured.
my daughter had to have tubes in both of her ears because she was always sick, it was a great improvement, the pain she had was awful. but after she got the tubes she was 100% better.
most of the tubes fall out as they grow, but some don't and have to be taken out. be sure to communicate with your dr. to find out if the tubes he is putting in, will fall out or have to be taken out, also how long he thinks the tubes should stay in, my doctor said they could cause problems if they didn't fall out.when i talked to other moms, that said they didn't have to have their childs removed. so i am not really sure, the answer to the end effect, hers fell out. either way, it helped her and anything that can take away pain from our babies is worth it. i say go for it
My son had tubes in his ear. This started back when he was about a 1 1/2 .He is 11 now. He had an ear infection about every 2 weeks. All the medication prescribed did not help. Each time it got worse and worse. One day he screamed for over 1 hour and finally it ruptured and mucus came out. Everytime he would get an ear infection it leaked. Which in some sense although it looks bad helped. Because when it drained it removed some of the pressure build up that had him in pain.
His pediatrician said it had to be documented 10 before they recommend him to a specialist . He saw a specialist and eventually had tubes. The are now dissolved but he has not had an ear infection since.
I'm not sure if you feed your daughter liquid through a bottle or sippy cup. I suggest you get rid of it. Use a regular straw. I was told that the position of their ear does not allow the liquid to drain. When they lay down and drink from a sippy cup it blocks the ear from draining causing the drainage to get infected and that is why they have the ear infection. She still may need tubes but it probably would minimize how often she gets it.
Hope it works. FYI it does not alter them in anyway. When my son needed to go swinmming I just put the foam ear plugs in and he went swimming. Just don't let them jump in the water. Not much discomfort either. Hope this helps.
my son has had them since his first birthday. i have not had any ear infections in a long time. they do drain when he has a cold or allegries, but the ear drops are great. i go to dr. johnson in coral springs.
the procedure takes a total of 15 mins.
i am here if you need more answers.

Hi! my 15 years old daughter was told the same diagnostic when she was 4 years old due recurrent ear infections but in place we treated her with Homeopathic medicine for a while and she never had problems again. In the other hand my nephew got the tubes at age 6 and he also solve his problem... I think that it may depend also in why she need the tubes.
Good luck!
My daughter was 13 months old when she got her tubes. She is now almost 12 years old. It was one of the best decisions I could of made. She never had another problem after she got the tubes. She went through the surgery with flying colors!!
Hope this helps.
My son had his first set of tubes put in at 11 months of age. He kept getting recurrent ear infections since 6 months of age and it got to the point where 3 different oral antibiotics didn't do anything and then tried injectable antibiotics and that still didn't touch his infections. The tubes stayed in until he was a little over 2 years old. Once they came out, fluid started building up behind his eardrums again so he had to go in and get new ones again.
It is such a simple procedure that only takes a few minutes and it is so routine for the docs. Once she recovers from the anesthesia, she will be jumping around like nothing happened!
I wouldn't waste money on specially fitted ear plugs, we found that his never stayed in as well as we would have liked. Target sells bright pink plugs that are putty like so it will mold to their ear (don't get the walgreens brand, those are awful!). It is great because it is easy to see and make sure they are still in from a few feet away.
Alright you've heard from mom's about having them put in their children so for extra re-assurance I will share that I had them put in 2 times. At age 5 and 9. At 5 I was 30% deaf in my right right ear and it improved my hearing a whole bunch. At 9 my hearing had some how sunk down to a 75% hearing loss in my right ear due to a large amount of fluid build up and the infections started coming back VERY badly. Today I am 24 and I can hear exactly what is being whispered in the kitchen 50 ft from me and my husband hates that I usually keep the TV at a moderately low level. I can't handle loud noises too well but I used to feel like people were talking through the wall at me. I haven't had an ear infection in well over a decade. The last tubes that I got just fell out one day when I was about 11 or 12 because they are made to do that. I absolutely hated waking up from the anesthesia but it was done in 6 minutes from the time I was wheeled in and knocked out to the time I woke up (I can only tell you that from my parents account). My middle brother had them put in at age almost 1 when I got them at 5 and he started walking a few days later and his speech simply exploded over night. We still got infections occasionally but the were mostly from thinking that jumping in the pool wasn't gonna really give us an infection...don't let her jump in a pool in a couple years if they are still in. It causes pressure on the ear drum which is where the tube is placed and it hurts like hell about a day later. And yes, ALWAYS put plugs in the ears before anything that would involve water and the head. If you don't, she will be a VERY unhappy camper a day or so later. I will say that the one or 2 ear infections I did get with the tubes in were the most miserable ones ever. But it was better than having one every 3 weeks or so like had been happening. Her hearing is gonna just change your world. If she's only saying a couple not too clear words, she's gonna start saying her words with more clarity and there will be more of them. Its also gonna seem like she actually listening to you now. Hope that helps, I know its a bit long but I was not in any pain when I woke up, I just had a physical vomiting reaction to the anesthesia. It was over in about 5 minutes and I was playing at home later that day both times.
Hi! My daughter who had just turned 4 had that done in March along with removing her tonsils and anoids (sorry for the spelling). She has never been better!! She hasn't been sick since the surgery. She did it at Miami Children's and it is a very quick procedure. She was out in about 45mins or less. Obviously after the precedure she was in some pain but only from the tonsils nothing else. And she was fine in about 3days. Her voice changed alot and no more snoring!! The tubes have helped her a lot because she had liquid in her ears and it was starting to affect her hearing. You just have to be careful that she does not get water in her ears with the tubes like when she is in the pool or shower. The surgery helped her so much and I would definately recommend it to anyone. Good luck!! And I'm sure she will be just fine.
You may want to try eliminating dairy. Dairy is often linked to mucus and ear and sinus infections. There are complications that tubes can cause such as scarring and future problems. Ask Dr. Stein, I know he had a patient who needed to have his whole ear operated on due to the scar tissue.
Ear tubes are a quick fix and as a child gets older their ear canal changes and they won't have the same problems.
Dear A.,
My son had tubes put in at 4 yrs old. He did well after the operation, but noises did bother him some over the next few years. He went swimming and all other activites was no problem.
The tubes disolved on their own.
I wish him the best. He will fine.
If you need to talk, let me know.
Sincerely,
G. H.
