Tube Blocked

Greetings Moms,

I need your loving and guiding advice and support again. Wednesday I went to have an HSG done (my husband and I have been trying for over 1 yr). My Dr. called today and said that my Right Tube is completely blocked with scar tissue. She said that the scar tissue is from an appendectomy procedure that I had in 2007. She said that this only happens to a small percent of woman and I happen to fall into it. With only having one viable tube that makes me more prone to eptopic (sp?)pregnancies. I am currently taking Clomid and she said on the phone that she wants us to keep trying for 3 months more. Then, she will do a laproscopy (sp?)to look around more in depth. I feel so confused inside, so confused that I don't know what questions I should be asking or if I should get a second opinion, sue the Dr. that performed the appendectomy 2 years ago OR WHAT! I am just so frustrated. Any advice would be so great.

What can I do next?

I just wanted to mention... I believe that 2 years is the statute of limitations in KS anyway for suing for medical malpractice. I don't know if you were serious about that, but if you think you might want to, you might need to get on it!

I'm sorry that happened to you, I know what is like to be the "very low percentage that that happens to." I hope it works out simply and well for you.

K.

The same thing happened to me after a c-sect. I tried for years to get pregnant. They finally did an HSG and found it. They went in with laproscopic surgery and fixed the problem for me. It's not a difficult surgery.
Good luck.

after reading the other responses, I think I would address the blocked tube. That way, hopefully, you'll have greater success at avoiding an ectopic pregnancy. It's always better to try to "play with a full deck"!

I had a friend who had scar tissue after an appendectomy that prevented her from getting pregnant (didn't find out until about a year or so after the appendectomy that her tube was blocked)then she had the surgery to correct it. Soon after that, she was able to conceive and carry three times. So, I would look into getting the scar tissue removed. Good luck to you!

Hi M.,

I had an ectopic pregancy about 12 years ago...things have changed a lot since then but when my doctor went in to remove the pregnancy he found that my 2nd tube was completely fine and I should be able to get pregnant. After a month of being on clomid we were successful. Unfortunately the fimbria (fingers at the end of the tube) closed and I was not able to carry that pregnancy either. From what my doctor told me it had nothing to do with scar tissue...just a fluke. Probably a good thing since my then husband surprised me with a divorce just prior to finding out I was pregnant. I tried the HSG in the tube I had left but I had too much scar tissue. Surgery to clear the tube was unsuccessful causing my doctor to suggest IVF as my only option to prevent further ectopic pregnacies. The good news is that a friend of mine also had an ectopic pregnancy and was very discouraged but decided to have the HSG. Since then she has had 2 wonderful children. Not sure the extent of your scarring but there is certainly hope, especially if the other tube seems to be fine. The most important thing I can recommend is to try to remain as positive and relaxed as you can during the whole process. Good luck to you!

I thought I'd address the issue of scar tissue. All people scar differently, some don't have any, some will look puffed and sore. Have you ever seen pictures of people who have had their ears pierced and the scarring doesn't stop, they don't tell you about those people when you get your ears pierced either:) Just take a breath, things will work out a year isn't a long time to try, my grandmother had 13 years between kids, she didn't have another baby until she adopted then had 2 more, so don't give up or get frustrated. Good Luck!

My husband and I tried for 2 years to get pregnant. I was on clomid, he was thoroughly checked out by a urologist, you name it. Finally I had a laparoscopy and found out that I had a tube blocked as well. We never knew the cause. I just want you to know that you CAN get pregnant with a blocked tube. We are now the parents of 3 kiddos and feel extremely blessed. I wish you the best of luck and God bless!

M.,
I haven't been there, but I've heard quite a few stories of people getting pregnant soon after an HSG. Apparently, sometimes just the procedure "clears the way" a bit (think, unintentional roto-rooter) and can make a pregnancy more likely for a few months. This might be why your doc is recommending the clomid for a few more cycles before taking further action. A single tube shouldn't increase the risk of an ectopic, but the scarring in the other one can...if an egg gets caught up in the scarring, but still gets fertilized, you have the risk of that complication. As for the appendectomy, the scarring is an unfortunate complication, but it can happen (and re: suing any docs over it...it won't work. If you look back into the informed consent you signed before you had it done (pain meds or not) it will surely mention possible scarring and adhesions. Anytime you cut into the abdomen, you risk the formation of scar tissue in surrounding areas, even if they weren't directly affected by the surgery. Sorry...not the news you probably wanted to hear.

Finally, a second opinion never hurt anyone! I'm all for second, and third opinions, and I bet your doc would support it too. Is your doc an OB/gyn or a fertility specialist? If a general OB/gyn, I'd get a referral to a good fertility specialist and while you wait for that appt. continue on with your current plan.

I hope the HSG not only found the problem, but gave your body a boost and your next cycle gives you a wonderful blessing!

I'll be praying for you!

I am sorry to hear the news of your test results. I know how frustrating the entire process can be.

I ended up with an ectopic pregnancy after 2 rounds of clomid. It was so hard, but I was lucky because I was on clomid we were able to catch it early and save my tube.

Generally, clomid is done in 6 month stretches so it may be that she wants you to continue your entire cycle.

I agree with the previous poster that there is nothing going for you on suing the doctor or even being angry at him. Sometimes bad things just happen. (I swear they seem to happen more frequently to those of us with infertility)

Never lose hope. We battled with infertility for 3 yrs before being granted our miracle. Oddly enough, he came when we were on a "break" from trying.

M.,

I so feel for you. I was diagnosed with a complete tube blockage. Both tubes were blocked and they did not know why. I was told my only option was in vitro. With in vitro, they skip right over your tubes and insert the embryo in the uterus. But, I was also told that sometimes the HSG test that diagnoses the blocked tubes can clear the tubes out. I also found a website about how massage the tube area can break up adhesions. I started doing massages in my lower pelvis myself. I don't know if that did the trick or the HSG test or just luck, but I did get pregnant naturally just a few months later. What I would say is that it is NOT a reason to give up hope. It may make getting pregnant more difficult but not impossible. I agree with your doctor - give it a few more months and see what happens. Good luck. Hang in there!
