I had my tubes tied after my 3rd C-Section and I did not notice any side affects! I was on the operating table for only an extra 10 minutes at the most. Plus I have been able to breastfeed my son just fine.
Does anyone have any experience in getting a tubal ligation? I'm going to have my 3rd c-section in a couple months and would like to have one done while they're in there. I want to make sure there's no side effects that they don't tell you about. I was also wondering if it affects breastfeeding and milk production? I breastfed my other kids and really want to breastfeed this one as well.

There are possible side effects for anything we do, including birth control pills. We can't predict ahead of time whether we'll experience any or not. But I had a tubal ligation along with some other exploratory abdominal surgery in my early 30's, and had no problems at all. Since it doesn't mess with your ovaries or hormones, there should be no negative effects on breastfeeding.
I have never regretted getting my tubes tied. I wish you as great an outcome!
I had mine 2 months ago with my c-section. It doesnt effect breastfeeding. I havent started my period yet, but my OB told me if they are heavier to let him know. I guess thats a possible side effect, which before when I asked him he said there wasnt any. Hmm
I got a tubal with my c-section nine months ago and am still successfully breastfeeding my twins. Good luck to you.
I had one with my c-section.......it was fine. took 3 minutes. I dont believe it affects breastfeeding, good luck
It doesn't affect your ovaries so should have no effect on breast feeding and does not cause hormonal problems.
I had one during my last c-section. It was done quickly. As far as side effects, I contribute my weight gain partly to it (as do some other mom's I've talked to who have had it) and my periods are a bit more painful but not unbearable. Didn't effect my breastfeeding at all. Good luck!!
I had it done but not at the time I delivered because I didn't have the paperwork done ahead of time....they want to make sure you aren't making a spur of the moment decision. I didn't have any problems, except for some pain which is to be expected.
The only issue with breastfeeding could be pain medication but if you address that with your doctor, they should be able to give you something that would be safe for the baby. My guess is, you would need something anyway since you are having a c-section.
The one thing you should be aware of, that my doctor told me, is that your monthly cycle can be more painful than before. I am hear to tell you that is an understatement for me! There are other risks but your doctor will tell you about those.
I had my tubes tied when I had my c-section with my 2nd. I have not had any side effects whatsoever and I was able to nurse just fine.
Congrats :)
I had a tubal ligation after my 2nd child in 1996. It caused me to have a horrible hormone imbalance. It was like PMS X 100. My cycles lasted longer, cramps lasted longer and I felt like I was having a nervous breakdown the week before and the week during my cycle. All the other times, I felt completely normal. I noticed a "dark cloud" right after my surgery. And I also had extreme pain which I thought they messed up or something. Each month my PMS and cycles got worse and worse. I knew it was a hormone imbalance from the tubal and doctors confirmed it was a hormone imbalance but said it wasn't from the tubal. I finally reversed it after 3 1/2 years of misery and haven't had a problem since. I was at the point where I'd rather have 10 more kids than one more month of misery because there was no end. Anyway, that was in the 90's. Doctors all thought I was crazy but the doctor who reversed it told me that more women come to him to reverse a tubal because of adverse symptoms than those who actually just want more children. It didn't affect my breastfeeding at all. Look into all the risks and symptoms and check with your doctor. I know a lot of people were fine and didn't suffer like I did. I wish you the best.
I had my tubal ligation done with my uterine ablation...no problem or complications....
having your tubes tied should NOT affect breastfeeding
I had a tubal done during my 3rd c-section. My baby is 16 months now, and I have had no problems with the tubal at all. No side effects. I didn't breastfeed, but I have never heard of a tubal affecting milk production.
I had mine much later after nursing was done but I will say it was the best thing I ever did. I was up and running the next day. Ask your OBGYN and they will give you the best answer.
I can't answer in regards to breastfeeding as I was past that point when I had it done but I had the new Adiana procedure done. Instead of tying or burning the tubes there are small coil implants put into the tubes. There are no hormones involved. Scar tissue forms and blocks the tubes. A back-up method will be used for 3 months after the procedure and then an xray is done to be sure that the tubes are fully blocked. It is permanent so you have to be sure that you are not going to want to reverse it. They are not able to do this procedure if you have had any tubal ligation done. Normally this is about a 30 minute procedure and you are awake for it but due to my having other issues as well I was asleep and it was about an hour long procedure. I had an endometrial abalation done at the same time. There will be some mild cramping for about a day or so but no worse than period cramping. If you have any questions regarding it feel free to ask!
